Universal Specialization Question

By Split Light, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

I was playing around with a character concept and was looking for an outside opinion. This is a street rat/ex-slave with some force potential, who is drafted by a traitorous Inquisitor into doing some of his dirty work/errands. Said inquisitor trains the PC in just a couple force tricks to help expedite things, but gives absolutely none of the background. So starting career is Sentinal: Shadow. Mostly a thief character with a couple specific force tricks to aid in sneakiness.

Once their Force potential is unlocked and our hero breaks away from the original trainer more abilities begin emerging. I was wondering if people thought it would be ok to go from a Force career (shadow), and then take Force Sensitive Emergent as a second tree, to simulate this blooming force awareness. I think it fits the background ok, and the Force Emergent also has a lot of talents I think would really fit the concept of a sneaky force user.

Is this acceptable?

As a GM, I would give this character concept the go-ahead. Sounds cool and fun!

Sure. But to be honest, Emergent is pretty vanilla, but what it lacks in flavor it makes up for in universal effectiveness -- a straight shot to FR, not to mention Sense Danger/Touch of Fate/Balance and Dedication are something every Force User in the galaxy can use. It's pure mechanical benefit, so should not be overlooked, even for F&D careerists.

Do you mean acceptable from a rules standpoint?

If so then yes.

Also, universal specs are considered in-carreer for everyone.

Keep in mind that buying into Force Sensitive Emergent won't automatically bump your Force Rating (you'll have to buy the Force Rating Talent in the FSE tree for that).

I know I don't get a force bump for Emergent, I just like the talents and the concept. I went through all the other career trees and this one fit best. I originally built the character as a thief, and then Emergent, then shadow, but The thief actually doesn't add a whole lot that I can't get out of Emergent and Shadow, and it ends up costing more. Especially considering I'd like to add on the Sentinal lightsaber tree (who's name I currently forget) shortly after we start the game.

One of the Spy careers, with Emergent, could be another option.

By the rules, it's perfectly fine to pick up Exile or Emergent if using a FaD career.

In fact, for a number of the LS Form specs, going into Emergent isn't a bad idea as it offers quick access to a Force Rating talent (something most of them don't have) as well as offering 2 ranks each in Grit, Toughened, Uncanny Reactions, and Uncanny Senses. I'm playing a Seeker/Ataru Striker in a friend's game, and went into Emergent; to be honest, having that rank of Indistinguishable has proven quite handy on more than one occasion.

Exile's probably better suited for those more interested in the mystical side of the Force as well as dealing with the seedy side of the galaxy. You don't get to Force Rating as quickly as you do with Emergent, but you do get a fair number of neat tricks, such as a permanent +1 boost to melee and ranged defense.

Yes, I'm actually more of a fan of the Exile, despite having basically the same talents as Emergent at probably a slightly higher final XP cost by the time you're done with it, because of the two stackable bonuses to defense. Those probably won't be your first defense buffs in a F&D game, but maybe your second or third.
