What do people think about this?
I guess I would prefer if "Resistance = Rebel" and "First Order = Imperial" (and "Scum = Scum").
Presumably it would take some time (like the entire Sequel trilogy?) to build up legit factions of all-new ships.

This is what has me the most curious. If they do just lump the new stuff in with the existing factions, that might tell us a lot about the nature of the Resistance and the First Order.
I think that's how it will go, keeping with the existing factions. After all even the Legends EU ships that are in the game already could be considered New Republic or Imperial Remnant, which is basically the same idea as the Resistance and First Order.
I don't necessarily want new factions for the same alignments in the same game. That's why I think a new game is the best option, or some odd compatibility rule that makes The Alliance The Resistance in some weird floaty way i don't even know what to even say anymore about it
I trust FFG to do the clever thing. The game needs some serious errata and if I were them, I'd make a second edition going forward, being able to use old stuff. But what's most likely is an "Aces" style pack that has the units of the original core set, but new.
One thing is certain.
We'll know by the next wave.
Something I've mentioned before, do another starter as a stand-alone expansion. Make it an advanced rules. You can clean up anything needed, add new concepts - do a more powerful attack and evade die, etc.
By doing it this way, you can make the new ships compatible with "refit cards" that add the new dice types to older ships - this would represent more powerful and newer tech. The game would be a great jumping on point for new players - the new fans of the new movies. It could be played all by itself, great for those of us that only buy one or each release and would like another damage deck, dice or maneuver templates. With the proposed upgrades, which could work even without new dice, you keep the tournament scene intact, as it doesnt cater to canon consistentcy anyways.
All the Factions in Star Wars.
I suspect we'll see a box like "Most Wanted" that includes 1 T-70 X-wing and 2 new looking TIE Fighters.
It very well could contain a new, consolidated rule book, a bunch of pilots (including new ones for the Falcon).
I don't know what you call this pack: I guess it would be silly not to call it "The Force Awakens" expansion.
The other two SKUs would be these two ship types sold separately.
I guess nothing released (yet) for the Scum faction.
But, moving forward, Ep.7 joins the canon completely and can/will be mined as needed for future ideas.
I am a bit leary referencing the source material name directly in the title of the expansion pack.
Perhaps they'll obliquely reference it "Awakened Force" or something?
All other packs more or less hide their source material heritage: so I could see them continuing this trend (they did not include a Star Wars: Rebels reference in the Ghost expansion pack name/logo).
Perhaps the "Most Wanted" analog would be called "First Order Resistance" or something.
Then "Resistance X-wing" and "First Order TIE".
These names would further confuse the alignment of each ship, however!!!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
Edited by evangerThe new ships are apparently already on the water, meaning they may be in stores before Wave 7 is. There's no way possible they'd release a 2nd edition when they still have products for 1st in the works.
I could in theory see a new starter set, but not a new ruleset.
Not new rules, per se, just a consolidated rule book with errata and new developments included.
Unlikely, sure.
But possible. Could infringe upon the starter set somewhat, unless you called it "Advanced Rules" or something.

Edited by evangerWhile I'm sure a second edition of the game is eventually a certainty, the rules do have a simple elegance that I don't think have been seriously strained yet (although cloaking came close). It also just isn't cost effective to do what they did with Descent when they moved to a second edition (the conversion kit) based on the sheer volume of cards they have produced, combined with what appears to be a vastly larger player base. Any other solution is bound to severely annoy existing players. As for "a more powerful attack and evade die" not only does stuff like this add complexity for complexity's sake, it can break the game with out careful planning, which will slow down the play testing phase (look at how WizKids has made attack wing pay to win with their OP kits). Additionally, we have a ship that was first introduced in 72 BBY (yt-1300) and a ship introduced at some point around/after Endor (e-wing) represented perfectly fine with the current rules. Nothing has shown such a huge technological leap from 4-6 to 7 to justify something like that.
Not to say I'm not willing to give it a go if it's executed well, but as it currently stands the rule set for x-wing is easily the most elegant, **** near perfect set of rules for streamline casual and competitive play that I've ever seen. In 3 years, we have seen this game get 7 waves of releases, accounting for 31 ships across 3 factions (counting dual faction ships, not counting epic ships). New upgrades, new actions and entirely new mechanics have been added, and the entire errata and faq is just 16 pages, most of which is applying general rules clarifications to individual cards. While I think an updated rule book might be nice for newer players (incorporating added rules and such) it shouldn't be overlooked that the current starter is still perfect for new players, and adding all the extra rules could scare aware people attracted to the simplicity of the game, rather than learning the new stuff as they go.
Id rather see 3 clear factions. Scum can be hired out by Empire or first order if you will. There are bound to be ships that are not related to either 2 main faction that can be used for scum ships.

I would expect that one likely way to do this would be for (like some have said) a most wanted style expansion to get each new faction started.
However I think the best way to do this would be with a new Core Set. This would allow them to introduce a new damage deck if required, and add any new components that MAY be required for future updates. If they did this, I would fully expect it to be backwards compatible with everything from the existing X-Wing game, and have a new rule in play for specific factions to be considered "Allied Factions". Like how the Luke Skywalker crew card is "Rebel Only" - but since the Rebel Alliance of old will likely be allied with the new republic, they will be allowed to be in the same lists. However there MIGHT be some advantage in the future, of being a "pure" list that isn't allied with anyone. Like maybe you need an alliance card, which costs 1 point, in order to mix allied cards in the same build.

Good. Let us all learn from Brother Marinealver's fine example.
Look at it this way. "Scum" already incorporates Black Sun, Hutt Cartel, Binayre Pirates, and unaligned smugglers and bounty hunters. Why make it more complicated than it needs to be? T-70 X-Wing is a rebel ship, NewTIE is an imperial ship. Unless the movies REALLY shake things up, we have essentially the same factions with slightly different names. Why change the whole game to fit them in?
We also have no idea if the new movies will include enough new ships to support an entire game. To my knowledge we have seen 4-5 new ships so far. The new TIE and X-Wing, the new shuttle, I think the ships escorting the shuttle were new, and I think there was a new (or at least unfamiliar) ship in the hangar scene. The movie could introduce dozens of new ships, or it could have the few new ships alongside the old standbys we are used to. We have no way of knowing, and it's a fair bet FFG isn't even in on EVERYTHING the next 6 movies will introduce/reuse.
Edited by FatherTurinHowever I think the best way to do this would be with a new Core Set.
Core sets quite often lose money for the company. The whole point is getting new people into the game. So the question is, would a new core set actually make sense? Would a new core set attract more people then the existing one?
This would allow them to introduce a new damage deck if required, and add any new components that MAY be required for future updates.
the logistical issues of a new damage deck or dice has been debated to death here, and pretty much everyone agree's it's not likely to happen.
Putting a new damage deck in means everyone who will play in a tournament is forced to buy yet another core set. Myself I can see issues with trying to do something like that.
And we have actually confirmation from Peterson that the Core and Falcon have a much slimmer profit margin than other X-wing products.
Yeah I just can't see new core set having much value to FFG.
It's unlikely to attract more people to the game then the current one will. Plus any sort of new items like a new damage deck or dice really flies in the basic principles of how FFG seems to work.
The concept of Core Set + what you want. If a new core set has a new damage deck then everyone is going to have to buy it, and as much as FFG may do things to really 'encourage' you to buy things like the Raider, they've never made anything other then the core set required.
It's also not something they have done with any other game that I can see.
I would bet against a new Core set as well. I'm expecting a "Most Wanted" like pack for Episode 7.
Also, there are no "new" factions in Episode 7. It's still the Empire vs. The Republic. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...
I partly disagree with there being no new core set. A new game (core set), on the shelves at Wallmart, Target, etc amid the SW epVII hype. BAM. Think of the coin FFG would rake in.
I'm sure it would be compatible with the existing game too.

New damage deck and new dice sounds like nonsense.
However, what they have done in other games is make big expansions that are a lot like new core sets. They aren't but they come close. That's the sort of thing I'd expect from an Ep. VII themed core set, with pilots from the new film.
