Back from Gen Con - Painted Tusken Raider

By keschnell, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

I painted this guy when I came back last night. These are going to be fun to paint! I'm looking forward to painting the droids and Boba Fett too.

Looks great! Well done!

Great work!

Can I ask how you paint a figure in a single evening? I'm finding that it often takes me 3 nights of 1-2 hours to get a mini to that level, and much longer if I want more detail/highlights. Shoot, priming alone guarantees that I won't be able to touch it until the next day.

My primer takes 15 mins to dry. I use Tamiya but don't think others take much longer.

Huh, I've been using P3 since my FLGS has it available in abundance, and it recommends letting them sit overnight. Time to upgrade?

That looks great! I used to play Warhammer 40k, I miss painting seeing this is encouraging me to pick up a brush again. Very nice.

wunderbar!...

I guess there are two kinds of painters. Those that take their time with the brush and those that rush straight through it.

Which isn't to say these results here aren't great and I rush my painting too. We rush painters are probably just a little impatient when it comes to waiting for primer and layers to dry. From what I hear you should leave the primer overnight but I find it is perfectly paintable in an hour or two when the smell has subsided.

Thanks for the compliments. Well, I was hurrying to paint one when I got back, and the Tusken Raiders were easier as they had less details. I normally don't rush this much, but I've been itching to start painting this set ever since I picked it up there. I started to paint the base coats on all of them at the same time, but then just moved on to one. I just painted a darker brown base coat to get the folds and painted lighter layers, especially the top of the folds of the cloaks. I also cheated on the priming because it dried so fast and started painting that same night. I haven't sealed him yet, so he was a bit shiny.

I wanted to do C-3PO last night, but spent time with a friend in town from Gen Con instead. Hopefully I'll get him done by tomorrow.

Now I really want to see C-3PO. I have no idea how to go about the colours. Then I'm new to the hobby so I'll patiently await Sorastro's guidance.

I give it: UrrUrrrrUrhr out of HurrUrrrUrrrr

I think I'm going to paint dark brown (since gold sometimes doesn't sit well alone), then paint with a burnished gold, then a layer of lighter gold, then highlights, plus of course the details on the non-gold parts. It'll be interesting to see how he turns out. If it's bad, I'll pull his arms out and put in a mesh netting for Chewbacca to carry!

And C-3PO was finished last night. Now on to the harder ones (I'm sure R2-D2 is going to be a pain):

Nice work! Do you use citadel paints? Do you mind sharing specifically which you used, both for the tusken and for 3PO? Can't wait to get a hold of Twin Shadows and get the new figs painted quickly so they're ready when they "show up" in the campaign.

I feel like 3po is going to have to be painted as a NMM scheme to relly pop. You did a great job, but those metal flakes are too noticeable at such a small scale IMO

I hear the new citadel gold paints for their Age of Sigmar stuff are really good. However I've not looked up the paints to find if the gold colours are really suitable or not.

I ended up using a mix of brands for C-3PO. One of the darker Citadel browns for the base, then P3's Blighted Gold (I love that color) and Runic Gold as layers, then their traditional gold color (I forget the name, but there's obviously a Citadel equivalent) and then gold mixed with silver as the highlights.

Tomkat makes a good point about the flakes (I don't have a lot of experience trying non metallic metal painting), but I think some of that look is just due to my bad/rushed cell phone camera work/lighting (my miniature photography needs a lot of work). It doesn't look as noticeable/rough in normal lighting (boy, I really need to figure out how to take better mini photos).

Thanks for all the compliments. I started on Boba Fett last night and he will take a lot longer.

Games Workshop has some painting tutorials for the Age of Sigmar box on YouTube, showing the golds in action. Retributor Armor base, followed by Reikland Fleshshade, followed by Auric Armor Gold looks like it would be a really good fit for 3PO.

Edit: Here's the first in the series:

Nice work on the weathering!

how did you do it?

Thanks--I just did a lot of little scorch marks and silver paint chips.

The new heroes are done (Kayn Somos, R2-D2, and the Heavy Troopers are left). Introducing Biv Bodhrik and Saska Teft:
