No reveals at Gencon...

By DanteRotterdam, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So, what exactly did they talk about? They've got tons of product lines beyond the Star Wars RPG, so did they reveal any new boardgames or card games? Expansions for existing stuff? what?

Preeeeeety much everything they covered is already on this site. Team Covenant has you covered with a good quality recording here.

Quick overview:

  • 3 New tabletop games (Revised Fury of Dracula, Revised Runescape, New Warhammer Fantasy Card game)
  • Wave VII & VIII for X-wing
  • Imperial Raider and a big rebel ship for Armada
  • Return to Hoth for Imperial Assault
  • 2nd Ed GoT card game
  • New undead Descent Expansion

In retrospect, very little news about the RPG, just "Hey, F&D is available." and a mention re: the already announced adventure and career books.

PS I take no responsibility for minor mistakes or omissions in what listed. The whole presentation is available.

Actually, something else that I think really bears mentioning is one of his answers to the crowd question: "Given the What's the plan for RPG material in other eras?"

He basically said since everything EU is in such a crazy state of flux, they're going pretty hands off other eras, which makes a TON of sense.

His exact response is at around 46:50 (here).

This reminds me...I went to their report last year, and with the exception of the F&D Beta (I think), I don't recall them talking about any RPG they produce. It's somewhat easy to advertize and announce expansions for their co-op and competative table games, and for new product lines, but it may be hard to get the masses excited about individual books aside from the main RPG itself (core rulebooks).

Minis are sexy.

Game contents laid out on a table are sexy.

A book? Not as sexy at a presentation like the In Flight Report.

That's probably why we aren't getting much for new RPG news at these things.

Having just watched the video, I was going to post this. They are not going to stay hands off forever, it seemed like, but for now at least they are.

This year they talked about how happy they are to have an RPG division and then mentioned all 3 Star Wars lines and their focus. They didn't really mention any other specific RPGs aside from Call of Cthulu. I think the problem is the games just aren't as high selling as their standard board games or their Star Wars minis. This year they only did a 60 minute presentation, so they have to go with what will appeal to the most people. On top of that, RPG books aren't even directed at every person that plays that particular RPG. Sure, most of us buy all of the books, but I would guess your average player picks up the CRB and probably the splat book for their career. Then again, maybe I'm wrong. FFG had done a good job of making everything appealing to all players.

Yeah, as someone who plays the 40k RPG games, I'm pretty envious of the amount of development Star Wars is getting. Three splatbooks in the works, a whole new game system just released, and a movie coming out soon that will (hopefully) generate even more interest in Star Wars things as a whole. As much as I can't wait for some more career specializations for Edge and Rebellion, we're sitting pretty right now.

I'm sure 40k hasn't been abandoned by any means, but I wish we were getting half as much development time as the Star Wars line.

Realistically, what sort of RPG announcements should we expect? Edge of the Empire still has two career books to complete before that line could be considered done. Age of Rebellion only has two out and Force and Destiny just announced their first career book. Add in the adventure books and setting books, this line has literally years of work ahead of it. Any surprise announcements would fill me with a bit of trepidation.

The miniatures games - and probably the card game - capture a larger fan base than the RPGs so it doesn't surprise me that they get more frequent announcements.

As a side note, Imperial Assault is a very good Descent re-skin and if you aren't playing it, you should reconsider. The tactical combat mechanics are pretty neat and I'm looking forward to the Tatooine (any day now) and Hoth expansions.

Wait... You asked what they should announce and then proceeded to list a TON of things they could have announced?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think they had to announce anything. We know of upcoming books for all 3 lines right now. I'm just not following your line of thinking.

Well, if they announce anything big it might be an announcement for something a year away, for instance, thus long enough away to tidy up the EotE line (1 adventure, 2 career, 1 region?), be halfway through the AoR line and a few books into FaD. They might be looking for a new outlet by then...

I forgot to use my <rhetorical></rhetorical> tags.

Given the pace and scheduling of book releases and that books are being released in alternating game lines (approximately a book a quarter or maybe two books in the same line in the same year, what with F&D now slowing things down further), I would be stunned if EotE is tidied up a year from now, let alone two. Unless more writers, line devs and artists are hired. Not trying to be a pessimist or rain on parades. Just trying to keep expectations realistic based on existing patterns.

Well AoR did nothing to slow down EotE as far as I am aware of. And I defenitely have never experienced a drought of a quarter so I am not sure why you are this sceptical... Then again my math might be off...

Who's to say the EotE line "will be tidied up"? Implying that we will not get more books?

Region books are still a possibilty. And there is alway the possibility of a supplement focusing on certain aspects not currently covered extensively. Maybe a pirate supplement with a new pirate universal career? I'm sure we'll continue to see new product and ideas.

Oh, I do agree with that but I am looking at that as being something of a cycle 2 thingy.

I am sure there will be minimally 6 career books, 3 adventures and 3 region books per line. Anthing after that will be anyone's guess...

I don't think we really need a splat book for every career. And I don't think we need any more core rulebooks. So I'm not sure where FFG can really go with the product line.

More settings and adventures I guess.

Well, you know, those career books are definitely coming.

And I'll probably end up buying them anyway :-\

I'd like to see books on mining and manufacturing. In addition to more interesting region books. Also something with some mechanics behind exploration would be nice (difficulty in finding/scouting new hyperspace routes, system and planetary survey difficulties, etc.).

Also a book on droids would be really handy. Something more comprehensive than we've seen thus far with more types of droids.

You know, with TEGG (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/The_Essential_Guide_to_Droids ) and TNEGG (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/The_New_Essential_Guide_to_Droids), plus what is already written up and summarized at <http://swrpg.viluppo.net/equipment/gear/category/18/>, I’m not convinced that we really need that much more information.

I... I'm all for using other resources for this game, but their existence doesn't preclude FFG from making their own, and shouldn't stop people from wanting FFG to make their own.

Well, prices and rarity aren't 100% cannonical coming from those sources...

True, but it shouldn’t be too hard to ballpark the numbers, and of course each GM can (and maybe should) take a close look at what prices they’re handing to the players, regardless of what the source is.

True enough. It doesn’t stop you from wanting them to put out their own information.

In the meanwhile, this might be something that the fan community can help address.

A book of racial variations (not just droids) might be interesting actually.
