No reveals at Gencon...

By DanteRotterdam, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

It could be possible – and hear me out because this may seem like crazy town at first – that they are just revealing book on their own timetable (or Disney's) rather than the entirely arbitrary convention schedule.

I mean, Gen Con reveals are neat and all, but it's not like it's necessary to make a big splash to have a good game.

Ok. One last time.

Every year at GenCon they do a 90 minute panel going over their entire business. The CONTINUALLY use this as a time to announce upcoming products. In fact they did exactly that with Imperial Assault and X-Wing this year (I only really pay attention to their Star Wars stuff). There is nothing wrong with people anticipating this to happen for the RPG line.

However, it appears they have already announced everything they are working on that they want the public to know. Two books for FaD, a book for AoR and a book for EotE is a pretty good amount of upcoming products. Additionally, if they ARE doing Force Awakens stuff, they likely cannot announce it until September.

No company books a 90 minute seminar to reveal things and then doesn't reveal things.

Well they did reveal things, just not about the game the people here wanted. I'm sure you know this though.

That's fairly snide for someone who agrees with you.

I am feeling a bit crabby. No offense intended. Just trying to point out that the convention schedule isn't really arbitrary when they set aside 90 minutes every year to announce things at said convention.

I completely agree with you. I was just telling Doc that if there would have been things in the RPG pipeline that they could have announced they would have. Hence the OP...

I expect this RPG to keep going strong. I am hoping for more bits to buy aside from books- like more of those little character tokens from the beginner boxes. I love those things.

I don't expect a new core book, since the main reason for a core book seems to be to give us 6 new careers to play. I don't see 6 new careers coming in the Force Awakens.

The real rub is that we probably won't see any pure EU-legends stuff until probably episode IX drops. I think either if a new Jedi Order is established, or the series ends, we could see a new core book showing career paths for raised-from-a-youngling Jedi. I doubt we'd ever get a core book for Sith Lords.

For now, I'm just going to keep collecting adventures and splat books and playing this game. Which I firmly expect we will see all 18 career books before the end.

I think if anything, for the pessimists, the market has at least been established for this type of rpg. If this line dies off, we can almost certainly expect to see something for one of their other lines: Android, Twilight Imperium or (hopefully) some fantasy line that uses magic.

I would buy any rpg book they made for Android. I haven't fallen in love with the card game, but the setting is awesome.

The presenter at the In-Flight report said that FFG had TFA product ON THE WATER!!!

So whatever it is has not only been designed, but has also been printed and shipped so it can be available the moment Hasbro's toys are available!

There isn't a question of "If" they're doing a tie-in product. It definitely exists, we just have to wait and see what it is.

I honestly expect to see tie-ins to ALL their product lines:

  • A reference book for the RPG
  • 2-3 figure packs Imperial Assault with Timeline 7 Missions
  • 4 Ship variants for X-Wing, or at least cards to use
  • 2 capital ships for Armada, or materials equivalent to what I described for X-wing
  • Whatever card game stuff they publish (I have NO frame of reference for this, and I'm okay with that).

That's ALL speculation, but it fits with their other smaller wave releases for the respective games.

Crazy. Like I said before, I didn't actually go through anything reported on the In Flight report other than the quick pictures of spoiled Star Wars goodness (which I was then able to see in the glass case at their booth). I didn't realize they said stuff was on the boat already. Makes the most sense though!

I heard him say "on the water" as well, but I took that to mean "in the works" rather than a literal statement that it was on a boat somewhere. People sometimes fumble their metaphors during a live presentation as opposed to a vetted and proof-read press release. I sincerely doubt we'll be seeing anything TFA-related this side of Christmas; I don't think Disney would want to spoil anything for the movie before it's released.

I think you're quite wrong. Petersen explicitly stated that as soon as Hasbro's TFA toys are available, FFG would have product available as well.

TFA products, including Hasbro's toys, have been announced to be available on 4.Sep.2015. (source) (source)

To be ready for that date, product needs to be on the boat now.

I may be wrong, and if so, mea culpa. But based on what Petersen said, I think we'll be seeing TFA product from FFG for sale in about a month, which is currently, literally, on the water.

All the merchandising tie-ins are releasing in September. I saw somewhere else that FFG had an announcement planned for September 4th (maybe it was wishful thinking).

I love how they put the mock up box with placeholder text right in the article. Feature callout!

Man, that's exciting.

Wondering: if we get rpg stuff on Sept 4, how many GMs are gonna dump their campaigns and go Episode VII? :P

I was thinking about this on the drive home. I really doubt we're gonna get any RPG material concerning TFA in Sept. I don't think there's any way they're going to be able to release anything of substance that won't include some kind of spoiler.

I said time period 7 missions for the Imperial assault, but that wouldn't be compatible with any of the current campaigns, so I'm guess that's out. It's very unlikely they'll do another expansion about a month after twin shadows...

So, I'm guessing some X-wing ships (we've already seen the advanced x-wings, TIEs and Falcon with the low profile dish) and maybe some Armada stuff. Card games will be a crap shoot.

"So last session we ended on a cliffhanger, where Gonzo the Hutt dropped you in a fighting pit with two rancors! So, anyway, its 30 years later and …"

I doubt we'll see roleplaying material for Ep VII that soon. X-Wing figures? Maybe. RPG stuff is a loooong shot, though. My guess is that we would be lucky for something to drop in January.

We might see an announcement though... With the usual lead time being what it is, it would take months for an announced product is on the shelves.

If they have anything in the pipeline for TFA (and why would they not?), they probably cannot talk about it at all. As far as I can see, we just received a third CRB coupled with assorted products, there are upcoming products for each of the three lines - what's with the naysaying?

No idea if that was directed at me but if you would read the whole topic you would see that there is hardly any naysaying going on at all except for 1 or 2 individuals.

Not directed at you or else I would have quoted you. And I find it rather impolite to tell me to read the thread when I have done exactly that and decided to answer the "1 or 2 individuals". You will note that I made no statement about the amount of naysaying, I just commented that I see it as unfounded.

Sorry, not meant to be impolite.

Force of habit i guess...

If they have anything in the pipeline for TFA (and why would they not?), they probably cannot talk about it at all.

This is exactly the case according to Petersen. In the In-flight, he was like "Guys. Seriously. I want to tell you about what coming, but if I did... you'd probably never hear from me again. I can tell you exactly nothing without violating our contracts with LucasFilms."

The Disney rat has ears everywhere. In fact, I was surprised he even was able to share that product exists and it's on the water, and I seriously appreciate that he went that far.

And thus my OP comes full-circle!

I was never concerned. FFG seems to have a good handle on their game(s). Even if they can't always discuss it.

Which, I think, means the next big thing in SW RPG must be The Force Awakens related...

So, what exactly did they talk about? They've got tons of product lines beyond the Star Wars RPG, so did they reveal any new boardgames or card games? Expansions for existing stuff? what?

They announced new products for X-Wing and Imperial Assault (the stuff all over the front page of the site). They mentioned that Armada is their second best selling Star Wars game behind X-Wing. They talked about Game of Thrones 2nd ed. which launched and completely sold out at GenCon.
