Wave 8 power creep.

By emmjay, in X-Wing

Look, I love X Wing, and for the most part it is fairly balanced. And, with currently released products in a standard 100 point match, it is very hard to get more than 4 primary weapon attack dice, much less 5+ agility dice. However, with wave 8 coming, it looks like it is possible to get to 7 attack dice and 7 evade dice. How?

SEVEN ATTACK DICE

Ghost (4)

Expose (+1) - The card is fuzzy but it looks like it has an EPT's and/astromech slot for R2d6

Range 1 (+1)

Jan Or's ability (+1)

SEVEN EVADE DICE

Any Star viper (Guri is a great choice) (3)

Cloaked with new Cloaking Device (+2)

Range 3 (+1)

Obstructed (+1)

With Guri this also means you have a Focus AND Evade token......

Ghost doesn't have an EPT

Unless Guri has PTL and limits herself to only greens and doesn't roll an eyeball for the cloak.

Oh no! The sky is falling!

No EPTs, no Astromech. 4 dice with forward arc, rear arc only if you pay for an escort ship and don't use it. Only Jan Or works, for total of 6 at R1. And that is costly as well as conditional, as it should be.

The StarViper does have one more agility than the Phantom, but has no access to ACD and therefore can't attack if it chose to cloak. Ships that don't shoot can't win games. Not to mention, the cloaking device has a 1/4 chance to fail permanently.

Yes its strong, no argument there. Broken? Hardly.

If you've got Jan, you probably won't be able to take the Phantom in a 100 point game unless you run everything naked.

StarViper doesn't have Evade on the bar.

It's been possible to get those high numbers before.

The problem then, as I'm sure it will continue to be, is that it sucks up so many points to make 1 good shot work that it is never a tier 1 list as 1 big shot doesn't generate enough firepower as a whole list.

Star viper can take the virago title to get a cloak... Why you would want yo I don't know. Cloak is not the same as advanced cloaking device. They are not the same at all.

both of those were possible before, so, your exmaples could be better, but im really not liking the power boost for newer stuff.

could we please see more old movie ships on the tables for good reasons? I don't even see much firesprays now, cuz the turrets are just easy/more conisitent.

Yes I said easier.

And we haven't even touched on the cloaking conditions where you can use it once and arbitrarily lose it for the remainder of the game.

Talonbane Cobra and Graz the Hunter (the named Kihraxz pilots) can also get 7 dice at times. But again, the cloaking device isn't consistent enough to create any widespread balance issues.

Wave 2 got us to 6 attack and 6 defense. Wave 3 got us to 7. Why are you complaining about Wave 8, exactly?

I remain optimistic they know what they are doing.

I remember the first time Keyan HLC Opportunist + Jan Ors was sprung on me. 6 dice TL focus 1 shot a TIE every turn. It just had too many moving parts to work consistently. And they still need to get you in arc.

RE defense dice, they are weaker than attack dice and can be mitigated with good movement. I noticed a few examples of R3 through an obstacle. While this does come up, it's also something we all have a reasonable amount of control over.

Rewarding good movement is not a bad thing.

This thread again?

6 Dice attacks are not unheard of, but they're generally more trouble then they're worth- Being in range 1 means your opponent most likely also gets an extra dice, Expose only works with primary weapons and has generally been shown to be less effective than Focus+Predator, Opportunist does work with all weapons but hinges on stripping tokens which is tricky and works less well against ships that can get multiple tokens, and Jan is very expensive and shackled to the HWK's very tricky dial.

Green dice stacking is easier, but usually involves making your own attack equally pointless, so who cares?

This thread again?

Yeah and then somebody had to go and bump the TIE Advanced Title thread. It's been quite a day.

Amusingly enough none of these threads have realized it shoots twice.

and we can get to like 10 defense dice

starviper + cloak + stealth + range 3 + obstruction+ bodyguard + being shot at by Zuckess

Use the correctly upgraded Epic transport as that obstruction, and you can hit 12!

Amusingly enough none of these threads have realized it shoots twice.

The only area where I would argue FFG is definitively showing signs of power creep is in the strength of ordinance, but that's starting from such a low floor that I'm not sure it's a problem.

Amusingly enough none of these threads have realized it shoots twice.

You know, if someone is willing to shove 100 points into a zero agility ship, I'mwillling to let it shoot twice while I tear it apart.

To be fair, let's see what some of those 6 completely new crew do. Or that new turret.

3 Agility Prockets+Opportunist+Jan Ors= 7 Attack Dice

A Wings are OP, pls nerf FFG

Eh, we've had the ability to roll 8 attack dice since wave 1: target lock from a range-1 X-Wing. Sure, you only kept the four best results, but you definitely had up to 8 attack dice rolled.

3 Agility Prockets+Opportunist+Jan Ors= 7 Attack Dice

Nah, now that all factions got a Fat Turret ship Interceptors would never be played again.

Pleas Nerf Interceptors. :P

And again... and again... and again!

Maybe that is because people are actually worried about power creep and (while not given necessarily in this thread) there are some good reasons for that?
