Death of the Wing victory condition clarification

By Oncus, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello new player here and would like a clarification on this quest:

It says:

If at the end of a hero's turn, all the spaces adjacent to him contain either boulders, the edge of the map or other figures while on the canyon..." Overlord wins the encounter.

Would this mean the hero can be stuck if he is surrounded by other heroes as well? It says figures, not being explicit about it being a monster, reanimate or a hero.

In the example below:

HR

SH

SB

H - Hero

S - Spider

B - Boulder

R - Reanimate

If that was the situation on the end of last hero's turn, would this mean the center hero is considered stuck and Overlord wins?

ANSWER: Yes, in the situation above, the central hero would be considered stuck, thus Overlord would win the encounter. However, the scenario above must be at the end of the central hero's turn. That is, the hero above him must have already played his turn and ended up in his position.

Yes. The overlord would have won. A reanimate is treated as a figure. It blocks LoS and movement. If it does not state specifically Hero or Monster figure, any moving character on the map would be a figure.

There are many rules, skills, or abilities the would say affects figures as well. These figures can be friendly figures and enemy figures.

Basically if the hero's turn ends and there is no empty adjacent spaces then your hero party is screwed and you lose the encounter.

Thanks!

I would say the opposite - the OL does not automatically win in this case. It depends upon which order in which the heroes took their turn and ended up in this situation. The win condition for the OL specifically says at the end of a hero's turn, that hero has to be surrounded. So if the Hero in the center ended their turn with an open space behind him (which is later filled by another hero) then the heroes are not defeated.

It is very difficult for the OL to win the 1st enouncter of this quest, since the heroes have to intentionally place themselves surrounded (like jumping over a boulder into a new spot that is surrounded), or they have to start surrounded and fail to remove or jump over a boulder.

You're right. The quest text clearly indicates that the hero should be surrounded at the end of his turn, even though he may be surrounded on the last heroes turn, and still be ok. I'm not sure if that was intended though as it feels a bit strange, but on the other hand I understand that the design might be intentional because it prevents a hero being stuck because of some other heroes action. No internal sabotaging I guess.
