Wraith Assault Carrier (custom huge ship)

By Vitalis, in X-Wing

Hello everyone!
I would like to show my latest Xwing project. My buddy at work gifted me with and old star destroyer model:

CQ6WkuE.jpg

As you can see, its waaaaay out of scale. So i decided to convert it into something. Hell but what? Its too small to fit any of existing ships (same issue FFG had with raider :D) and the same resolution: i decided to create my own class. As as wrote whole background for my empire ships operating as Venom Squadron, an elite black ops unit, i dediced that custom one-of-a-kind corvette will fit nicely :)

Now what gonna difference it from raider? Well one thing raider lacks: hangar bays - those quick operations of ties need a hyperspace capable base.

Already got rules for it in my mind, but i want to at least finish modeling it before writing them.

(and i know gozanti stole my idea ;) )

Enought talk, enyoj shipyard report.

23Rxvap.jpgHere You can see the shape of the new hull. This required LOTS of heating the blade :)

2bbEhrf.jpgThats how rubble from ISD looks like.

h854nPC.jpgBoth parts of hull cut into shape with reattached engines.

P5J8y9O.jpgLeftovers from cutting the hull. remember this shape ;)

ybmS2y3.jpgFront view of the hagar....hole.

XtdIBrZ.jpgAnd hull glued back together.

H5ljfQZ.jpgStarting to build new superstructure (dont mind the hole, in real its not that big, and its gonna be filled with putty anyway).

Q5xfT6V.jpgHangar entry WIP.

L5GDLMu.jpgAnd almost finished (still miss the putty to fill the gaps). The hole is filled with transparent plasticard, that will work miracles with painting.

7YMrPek.jpg?1Told You to remeber this shape? New bridge superstructure made out of leftovers from hull.

EVu5pcP.jpg?1Side shot of almost finished Wraith.

ZGZTrYt.jpgAnd a top shot. Also you can see the scale here, overall its shorter than CR90 but 2times wider.

Whats left to do? Rear wall of the bridge filling all the gaps with putty and small bars, adding some details (especially to the bridge), then rules and painting.

Good work! It looks great! Be sure to post pics once it's done.

HELL YEAH!

Given any thoughts to stats?

Look fantastic so far.

Interesting conversion. I'm not sold on the new bridge, but overall this looks promising.

Awesome custom!!!

Main feature:

Dock action:

One Tie ship that has not moved with speed higher than 2 this turn, and is in range 1 and inside front segment arc (arc gonna line up with hangar) can enter hangar bays of Wraith. Docked ship is removed from board. Each time you would set a maneuver dial for docked ship while its inside wraith you may do one of the following instead:

-turn a faceup damage card facedown

-discard a facedown damage card

-recover 1 shield

-take one of used non-unique upgrage cards ship had and attach it back to the ship (ex. stealth device, warheads).

Any time you would set a maneuver dial for the docked ship you may instead take 2strait maneuver from front brackets of wraith and redeploy docked ship instead there. It may use actions but cant attack this turn.

Up to 2 ships can dock at the same time.

Stat wise:

Front

Ability: if you mount a hardpoint upgrade you cannot use dock action, and beam upgrade. Hardpoint upgrade cost is 0 points. (this simulates combat oriented version)

-low hull (due to hangar), high shields, no native guns.

-actions : dock , ?

-upgrades: beam(no rules specified yet), some crew

Aft

No ability

-moderate hull, moderate shields, no native guns(?)

-actions: target lock, coordinate, ?

-upgrades: crew, hardpoint

Interesting conversion. I'm not sold on the new bridge, but overall this looks promising.

I agree. Something is off with it. I think its too high, thats why it looks weird.

I feel like the bridge being half the length of the ship doesn't make sense or look right. Maybe make it half as long and mount it further back, more like standard SD designs.

Very cool and unique!! Nice work mate.

Generally I like what you're doing so far, especially the forward hangar section. In addition....

I agree. I'd also decrease the neck size by half, and if you have any plasticard, maybe build out a "fin" on the back, as with the Venator-class cruiser. That way you get a sleeker profile. Get some GW Stormraven engine bits to build out the engine section and you're gold.

What might be throwing people is that usually we see SD's with proportionately smaller bridges (even down to the Arquitens-class). A quick image search turned up this, which seems to be along the lines of what you're doing, right down to the front launch deck:

Great direction, but the bridge is not a good addition. For as small as this kind of craft will be, you could easily do without it and it would look like a sleek sister ship to the Raider.

I like that bridge though. Gives it a more predatory look

The top down view, with the bridge as it stands, looks like another ship is docked to the carrier. Other than the shape and size of the bridge it looks great! I don't know if it's possible, but if you can find a screen dump of a hangar bay and print it out on the backside of a piece of mylar. Or simply print to paper and glue it to the backside of the clear plastic. Instant hangar bay.

Decisions have been made!:)
The bridge gonna stay the same shape.

Mostly thats why. Also a wanted it to be rather substancial because you know: fighter control all that stuff, something like airport control tower, it needs to stand out a bit, and give good situational awareness.
But ill lower the connector a bit and move bridge a bit back. Photos should be today:)

Good for you. Make it how YOU want, because you're doing the work and you're going to fly her.

Are you going to illuminate this beast?

I like it you've done a good job, I'd of personally made the bridge shorter but it in way looks bad, now get painting.

Rockin'! Looking forward to the photos.

Did you look into turrets? I understand Mel sells some...

That was the plan. But i was so eager to get to work i couldnt wait a day or two to get the materials to make a proper led installation:D

Now ill have to improvise, but yea there gonna be some leds here.

If you want to see what Mel's turrets look like on a ship, look here. I modified them a little.

Nah, no turrets, Your ship (**** epic job BTW, mine looks like kindergarden in comparison :P) is way bigger, so on mine they would look off scale, but yea ill have to think about some cannons.

And promised bridge modification, very subtle but i think it lines better with the rest of the ship now. Sorry 'bout flash photos, but my focus went off for some reason without it.

Bridge now lines with the superstructure - better overall composition.

I have brought this idea up before, but I think a mechanic to spend energy to let you "produce" fighters would be a neat idea for a carrier. not that it would actually be manufacturing them, but the fluff part would be that it is carrying a lot of them and spends energy to launch them.

the card could take 2 cargo slots, or the cost could be built into the card you will make for your model.

something like

"expanded hangar bays"

2 cargo slots and 1 crew slot

cost 20 points?

once per turn, you may spend 3 energy to deploy 1 academy tie in your front arc at range 1 of this ship facing any direction you choose.

basically, you pay points to buy the ties at a discount. the upgrade does not pay for itself until the third tie is out the door, but if you keep this ship protected, it could crank out a tie every turn, though I am assuming a base energy of 4, so you run into energy constraints. I actually thought this up when the gozanti was being discussed, but that ship has sailed. really like the front hangar bay, bot that wild about the bridge, personally, but it's still cool overall.
