Tie Advanced Prototype V1 Discussion (no X1 talk)

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

Have you ever considered splitting a Viper with someone who wants the ship but isn't in particular need of thruster surplus? Vipers come with surplus Autothrusters.

Nah, he's gotta get over his fear of non-TIEs sometime .

I've considered it. But then realized that would be spending $8 for a card.

It's not fear, it's disdain.

"It's not fear, it's disdain."

People never just dain things anymore it's a shame.

LFL checks everything so I think it probably does have shields and that the Wookiee is wrong as it so often is. That being said, if we assume the Wookiee is right it also says it lacks a hyperdrive, so there's a chunk of weight gone.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/TIE_Advanced_v1

The starfighter was fitted with a hyperdrive and basic shields, and unlike the TIE Advanced x1 , the v1's S-foils could fold in around the cockpit when not in flight, conserving hangar space.

So - the Wookiee says: Has hyperdrive, has shields.

And the VERY next sentence in that article is:

Unusually for a TIE model, it had solar panels only on the inside surface of the wings, instead armor-plating the outside surfaces in order to make it more resistant to enemy fire from the sides (although it still lacked shields).

So...which is it Wookieepedia?

It should be noted that the Star Wars website mentions most of the ways the ship is an upgrade over the standard TIE Fighter, and makes no mention of it having shields.

I guess FFG put the amount of research into it that it deserves?

Is that a sarcastic way of saying "Not very much"? Or do you mean that seriously?

Well, I mean, it's a TIE~

Since everything they do has to pass muster with Lucasfilm (remember the little cards from every year at GenCon that say "pending licensor approval"?) I think someone at FFG probably did put in the research.

Or, to put it another way, if it didn't have shields in canon, I very much doubt the version we see would have them.

Fear leads to disdain, disdain leads to anger, anger leads to suffering...

...or something like that.

I think the main reason they put in shields was a design reason, so that it's a little less subject to criti. Partl because it would be seen as less appealing if it had 4 hull instead of the spread, though hull damage only means so,etching if crit.

The source usually cited for "hyperdrive and basic shields" is the Star Wars Rebels Visual Guide (page 108).

Looks like a very capable little ship, and I do like the design of it. Worth it even if I only get one to fly the Inquisitor. One of my favourite new characters.

The only problem I can see happening with the V1 title is if your opponent ends up out of range to target lock, then gets in range at a higher pilot skill. Though, that's an edge case, and for 1-point, that's some nice action economy. Also, the majority of the time you won't have any focus tokens while trying to maximise that, unless it has enough greens for PTL to be viable.

So is that...more canon or less, than the other sources?

Who's to say that the X-Wing representation of "shields" doesn't also include extra armor plating in addition to the standard energy shields?

Personally I considered both to be in that category.

Words?

Armor is not shields.

Given that it's a newcanon reference book, and that there is no source cited for the "still lacked shields" bit on the Wookieepedia page - I'm going with "has shields" until another newcanon reference book can be cited (page number and all) that states otherwise.

EDIT: Also - I think that the 9.2m length reference is probably wrong - TIEs in the OT are 9.2m long (thanks to the solar panels) - but this thing's solar panels are far shorter.

We like to call it the TAP ;)

I think this thing don't fit in between the Tie Fighters and the Tie Advanced. Its just too different looking. Its even lacking the solar cells on the outer side of its solar collector wings, which makes no sense.

The design owes a lot to the Infiltrator from TPM.

^the thing there is that we already got the development chain leading into the TIE, even if the Eta-2/V-Wing steps are KSE instead of RSS

it's an evolutionary isolate, the TIE/x1 is LN>x1>IN

This design approach was a failure, obviously.

With Wave 8 I get the feeling that X-Wing is becoming more mainstreamish with this Rebels series stuff ...

There is only ONE canon reference book currently:

http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Star-Wars-Ryder-Windham/dp/1465436014/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1438778613&sr=1-1&keywords=ultimate+star+wars

You could have just linked the Complete Vehicles book instead of an irrelevant book with Complete Vehicles in the "people also bought this" section~

No, I linked the correct book. The Star Wars: Complete Vehicles is a reprint from 2007 and does not have the Disney seal on it. Therefor, NOT canon.
