This story will probably be told for years to come at our table and I just wanted to share it with the forum.
My group and I have been playing this version of Star Wars since it was released. We've been together for nearly ten years: since high school for us. We all know one another very well and expect certain things. When Edge of the Empire first came out, I was most definitely going to run. Smugglers are my thing and the group loved the idea. I wanted a game like Wing Commander: Privateer going on. Trading, smuggling, etc. A lot of my players find enjoyment in the little bookkeeping in ways to find money. I introduced them to a Hutt in who they instantly hated named Zorka. Adventures were had and we all had fun. Age of Rebellion came out and suddenly the group started to get Rebel contacts. They looked at it like "the Empire is going to be after us no matter what, might as well fight them". More adventure ensued, but Zorka was always there to offer help if they absolutely needed it.
"Don't trust a Hutt" became the campaign mantra, as they tried to swindle him a number of times, but Zorka was always a step ahead. They hated this Hutt with a passion.
Lords of Nal Hutta release and I take a break from running. Another DM takes over, one who once ran our old Star Wars games ranging from WEG to WOTC. I had to create a character to play alongside of them. I, of course, make Zorka a character. Having lost his empire to a rival, he's out for revenge and calls in a favor from the Captain. In hiding and now a member of the crew, I made him a Hired Gun Enforcer. I played him for a few games. Our Rodian smuggler captain, who has had a long history with him, just talked smack to him in his face. Zorka took it well, being an easygoing Hutt who enjoyed a good, scathing insult.
We take a break from the game for a few months, planning to pick up when the last core book comes out. Force and Destiny comes out and the table fills. People who whined about Edge of the Empire not having Jedi are suddenly VERY interested in playing. We have seven players. I'm running again and my little brother wants to play as well, but he just wants to roll dice. He had a bad few weeks and just wants to hang out with friends. I tell him he can play my character and he loves Zorka (he's 19 by the way).
We're in the 450-500 range for XP.
So, they need to save a bunch of rebels and there are 12 stormtroopers, two sergeants, and an inquisitor who guards them. All these stats are from the book, but I've made it so explosives cannot be used. They set up a sniper at extreme range. He fires once, misses and runs out of ammo. Has to run to the battle. The captain and our gunslinger burst in, blasting at stormtroopers, they take out quite a few. Our bounty hunter comes in and starts taking out troopers as well. The "jedi" come in, which there are four and immediately go for the Inquisitor. They unload everything they have on him and barely do any damage due to parry and bad rolls. The inquisitor is rocking out a double lightsaber and I roll like an allstar.
Now, I can be a harsh GM. When it comes to new players, I fudge rolls and play up the danger or how -near miss- a hit actually was. Play on the fear of how close the fight was. If you do something stupid, I'll let it slide. Maybe you didn't get all of the reward.
These jedi are the guys who have played AD&D 2nd edition with me. The dudes with the lightsabers are the ones I expect a bit more out of, since we play this game every other week. The other game on the weekend we play Labyrinth Lord or the DCC RPG. They know combat can lead to death and going in like a bunch of lightsaber wielding maniacs will get them blown up. They were just so caught up in all the cool stuff they could do, they didn't think that there would be better. The inquisitor and the sergeants brought them down in two rounds.
The rodian captain and gunslinger got caught up in the fight too, but managed to lead the inquisitor away after finishing up the troopers. The bounty hunter decided to lead the rebels away; everyone agreeing that was for the best.
All that was left was the Hutt versus the Inquisitor. My little brother did not care and, in character, yelled:
"ZORKA THE HUTT, HERO OF THE REBELLION HA HA HA!" and unloaded his heavy blaster rifle.
At first, I laughed him off. I felt bad for him since he was about to be diced. Zorka's blaster was modded to hell and back thanks to our mechanic who was focused in modding weapons for others. Zorka unloaded pain on the inquisitor. The inquisitor reflected as much as he could, but he was hurt bad. He came at Zorka and decided to attack and sunder. Got both off, but Zorka had a ridiculous amount of HP (20 something). He shrugged it off and went for his Gammorean Vibro-ax. Not as much skill in melee, but enough and it was there the Inquisitor was stopped by the tenacity of a Hutt.
Everyone at the table left saying it: Zorka the Hutt, Hero of the Rebellion!
Posters are being made and word is being spread in the outer rim planets of the heroic actions of Zorka.
