Is rebels worth watching?

By AgentV, in X-Wing Off-Topic

When I first saw what rebels looked like, it appeared kid-ish, but some of my friends (my age, earl-mid twenties) say its pretty good. I took their advice on clone wars, and found that show to be very hit-or-miss.

Simply, people who have seen it, with as few spoilers as possible, is the show worth my time?

I certainly think so. It's a bit rough to start, but around halfway into the first season the show really starts to work, and the second season premiere is great.

There are occasional painful kiddie moments, I was very disappointed that what should have been a massacre was only a mass arrest, but overall it is shaping up very well.

Plus it "feels" much more like the original trilogy than clone wars (which I liked) did.

I tell people it's like firefly for kids in the star wars universe.

The first episodes can be kind of rough. But, much like Avatar, it finds it's footing midway through. Even then, there are some good moments in the first episodes.

I have not watched it. However, both of my kids have (boy 10, girl 13) and they HATED it. So much so that my son will refuse to buy LEGO Rebel stuff. That means that he REALLY doesn't like it. I know they've watched severa episodes at least but I don't know how far they got into it. I don't plan on watching it because it reminds me of the stupid Ewok TV series that came out after Ep. VI. Makes me mini-vomit every time I think of it. I doubt I'll get any Rebels ships in Wave 8.

Both I and the kids love the Clone Wars, esp. the darker, more complicated episodes/seasons.

How does rebels remind you of Ewoks when they have basically nothing in common other then the words Star Wars in the title and being cartoons? Also how can it remind you of anything if you haven't actually watched it?

That makes no sense whatsoever.

It is nothing like the old Ewoks cartoon. Like, not at all. It has more in common with a Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet (OK, not really, but you get my point).

It IS a lot like the Clone Wars. People die are murdered, the heroes fail, there are consequences to their actions. There is a lot of psychology going on behind the characters

I believe you, I just don't see how that is possible. Unless maybe they only episode they've seen is the second one with Artoo and Threepio. That one came across as a little bit slapstick. But even then they are dealing with the consequences of a mass genocide.

I just can't stand those Stormtroopers.

I've no idea if it's 'kid-ish' or what that even really means...it's a TV programme for kids...if it is 'kid-ish' should that mean that adults can't enjoy it?

I'm almost 42 years old, have been heavily into Star Wars since I first saw it was a 4 or 5 years old and I loved Rebels and I'm chomping at the bit to see the next series.

It's an enormous amount of fun, set in the Star Wars universe and features Stormtroopers, Lightsabers, TIE Fighters, Blasters etc etc and is chock full of the sounds and images that make Star Wars what it is.

It's made to be entertaining to kids, but there is a lot going on that kids won't pick up. Rebels season 1 is significantly better than Clone Wars season 1. The darker stuff that gets going in the second half of the season is really solid. I'm trying to limp my way through Clone Wars season 2 and there are f-ing zombies, FFS.

Entertaining discussion and I did say that I hadn't seen it right off he bat. But, I wasn't talking about the Ewoks cartoon, I was referring to the live action show that was sort of a Swiss Family Robinson kinda thing. The storm trooper comedy antics was one of the things they mentioned. They also hated the teen character who was a supposedly powerful Jedi (their words). I guess it got to a point that even they couldn't suspend their disbelief. They were also not happy that the CW was cut so abruptly with stories left untold to be replaced with rebels. Maybe I'll watch a few episodes but I don't watch much TV these days so probably not haha.

I loved the Ewok movies as a kid.

Like I said, the early episodes were rough. But, do you judge Avatar by it's first season? It really seems to hit it's stride at Empire Day. And the tone just feels so much like the OT.

And I have deep issues with how "dark" Clone Wars got.

It's absolutely worth watching and each episode is better than the last.

So the consensus is that if I'm able to get through the first few episodes it'll be worth while? Seems as if you guys have convinced me its worth a shot.

Thanks to all those who responded.

Watch at least up through the "Empire Day" two-parter.

I was pretty luke warm on the show to begin with too. That story is what made me go "OK, this is enjoyable enough for me to keep watching." Then the season finale made me go "Wow, that was great, I love where they are going with this." And the season 2 premiere made me go "Holy crap, Vader is awesome!!! Squee... This is the Star Wars content I have wanted for 30 years."

At this point (as a 43 year old guy who saw ANH in a drive in when it first came out) I am honestly more excited about Rebels than I am about Force Awakens.

Here is a short trailer, watch it and judge for yourself.

Also, Hera is the best space mom ever.

*groan*

I watched it. I gave it a fair go. I watched the entire first season and tried to like it. It did not fit into my idea of the SW universe (heroes flying TIE fighters upside down whilst hanging from the flight yolk by their feet .. it's too much for me.) I won't continue to watch it and nor do I have any interest in the newly released Wave 8 material.

Should you not watch it based on this review .. No! It is all subjective.

The best thing you can do is take the advise of the majority here. Watch it, give it a fair go .. and then decide for yourself.

I'm 37, I had a bunch of the toys when I was a kid. My parents had a VCR in 1980. We had bootleg VHS tapes of ANH and Empire because that's all there was. My dad pulled me out of school to watch Jedi on opening day.

In high school, I wore out my copies of the Zhan trilogy- one book at a time and why isn't the next one out yet?!

I watched Phantom a few times in the theater, Attack of the Clones a few times, and saw Sith 3 times on opening day.

Along the way, I played a ton of the video games. In fact, when I'm done with this post, I'm going to Star playing KotOR 2 again.

I couldn't figure out if Clone Wars was worth watching. Was it made for kids? At a party, a friend of a friend convinced me that no- this was the real deal. A month late it was on Netflix. He was right.

Clone Wars hooked me in the second episode when the big ion gun fired, and it was a terror weapon reminiscent of the Death Star and something about it just hooked into my brain and said "yup".

Why do I love Rebels?

The animation is serviceable. It's clean, has style, and is expressive. It's not aiming to redefine CGI, and so doesn't reach that high level.

The stories and characters are real. Not, like, actual nonfiction. But rather: they behave in ways I would expect actual people to behave in those situations. The characters are consistent from episode to episode. The core behavioral drivers are constant- but people grow. That's _hard_ for a writer to pull off.

Even the bad guys. Yes. They're evil. This is Star Wars. Tarkin is so scary that Vader bows to him. The Inquisitor is evil, and knows how to push the anger buttons. He's also terrified of failing, and that terror is what drives him.

The Stormtroopers? These guys are just soldiers trying to make a living keeping order. Some relish the chance to cause pain, and some just like the perks of the job. But by and large they're just people in the service of an evil machine.

That's what I like about Rebels. The Empire is clearly evil, and clearly designed to be weilded by evil people. But that Empire is starting to get a bit flabby. As that happens, people are able to start taking a stand against the Empire.

Why do I love Rebels?

Sabine Wren. She fell for the Empire. Hard. She was training to be a soldier, a keeper of the Emperor's peace, and a bringer of the Empire's order. The Empire betrayed her by being a house built on lies and corpses. So now she fights to destroy that Empire. But can she trust her new comrads? She must follow orders (that's how soldiers survive), but she can't just follow orders- that's how evil is maintained.

Etc and so forth and more. So much more.

Also: lots of good Pew Pew Pew. I'm 37, but also 8.

Oh, one word of warning though.

The animation for the wookies in the first episode is ATROCIOUS.

Oh god, the horror. The horror...

I like it but it's hit or miss, and there's a lot of misses. But when it's hits the mark I really enjoy it. It does seem to improve a good deal as it progresses. I felt the same about Clone Wars, but I really loved the last 2-3 seasons (I still can't believe 2 of the final 6 were Jar Jar episodes...uh).

Is it out on blue ray yet. Cause i don't like the 15 minute episode with 20 minutes of Comercials. Kid commercials!!!

No not yet, only the plot which was 2 episodes.

Like so many others. I loved the show and so does my son. The fist few were a bit rocky but it gets better and better. I also agree it reminds me a ton of the old WEG Star Wars game.

And yeah the wookies were bad, so very bad. But to be fair, the art of the show is all intended to be a throw back to the Ralph McQuarrie concept art, and I think with the wookies they tried to 'McQuarrielize' them.
