Let the ship create the crew!

By Charade, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I've been reading a lot of the different sourcebooks for Edge of the Empire. And one of my favorite parts is always checking out the new ships. The more the merrier, I say! But since I'm running a classic game of smuggling, outlawry and crime bosses, I need rival smugglers, both for actual enemies and for friendly rivalry. So recently I've been picking some of the ships better suited for light trading and creating smuggling crews around the description and stats of the ship. I'm in the middling of coming up with a tough, professional gang of merc/smuggler types for the YV-929, the armed light freighter, a group that toughs and shoots their way out of ambushes rather than fleeing. And a Duros gambler who dabbles in smuggling for the ship that started out as a luxury liner but ended up getting converted to a freighter halfway through the design process. The name escapes me, but its in my notes. Anyone else done anything like this, or have any interesting ways they came up with rival smugglers and criminals?
