Finally, a wave where I won't buy everything.

By zlynn22, in X-Wing

What say you? Anyone else share my "if it didn't exist when I discovered Star Wars, it doesn't exist" mentality?

If that's how I rolled I wouldn't have very many ships to play with. The game would be limited to X-Wing, Y-Wing, TIE Fighter, TIE Advanced, and the Falcon.

I'm with you on this. ;)

Wave 5 almost did it for me, but I bought 2 of each...

But now with Wave 8 my wallet rejoices! I have no interest whatsoever in this Rebels stuff. I'll probably buy the bounty hunter ships. Now, they haven't revealed the upgrades yet, and I'm sure there's something I'll want. But as a casual player I don't really NEED them, and it looks like there's some awesome stuff (like tractor beams) in the scum ships.

....

I'm with you OP I'll only be picking up scum ships.

The thing is, although I do agree to a point about the OT is the only real starwars (+some of the 80's and 90's EU) the way I see it is

how much Sci-Fi is around these days??

Very little is the answer. And I mean proper Sci-Fi

Since Stargate got canned there has been almost none at all. And that sux so bad.

My point is give rebels a chance, and support FFG's lovely space ship models.

The are pretty much our last cool hope for spaceships

how long does it take you guys to brush your teeth in the morning?

I understand the OP's sentiment. However, I have to admit that I've quickly fallen in love with Rebels. It is one of the best shows on TV, being beaten only by Game of Thrones and perhaps Doctor Who. Yes I rank it above the Walking Dead even.... so personally I'm happy with the Ghost, but very disappointed with the TIE Advanced Prototype that somehow isn't a TIE Advanced.

I MIGHT skip that one

I would like to apologise in advance, but I don't believe that the original trilogy is the only thing Star Wars related I ever want to watch. Personally I am quite happy for the investment of an new ho- I mean audience. Xd that being said, I never really took things particarly seriously.

In any case, I am not buying any imp or rebel stuff because I limited myself exclusively to scum to keep my hobby manageable. I could very well see the ghost being just as iconic as the flacon to newer generations.

The new tie advanced actually is a really nice package, tracer missiles could really setup some nasty alpha strikes,

I'm kinda with you on this... But I do make exceptions.

As someone who caught the first SW film in a theater in '77, I'm definitely "old school." I read the Marvel comics, I read the Brian Daley Han Solo trilogy, I played with the Kenner action figures, I spent hours with SW-themed PrestoMagix (ha), and I ended up buying the first edition of the WEG RPG.

From there, I spent hours/days/weeks/months/years(!) playing a bunch of SW video games such as X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing: Alliance, Shadows of the Empire, Force Commander ... and eventually KOTORs I and II, TFUs I and II, some Battlefront, and (the unbelievably awesome Jedi-free) Republic Commando.

While I enjoyed the prequels (in fact, I'd almost say I loved Episode III), they were never as impactful as the OT. Yet... I adored both Tartakovsky's and Filoni's Clone Wars efforts as well as the Clone Wars/Quinlan Vos material being pumped out by comicbook writer John Ostrander. (I'm a big-time Suicide Squad fan.)

So what it really boils down to is this: I have a personal canon that I adhere to - the OT, the prequels, the CW animated series, the aforementioned video games, the Ostrander comics, and the initial Thrawn trilogy. I really came to loathe most of the EU after Zahn's early work, and I just cannot get into Rebels the way I got into CW (as I have serious problems with multiple Jedi running around between Episodes III and IV and, well, the entire cast of Rebels just seem like ciphers and/or are mostly annoying cookie-cutter archetypes with gimmicky weapons ... just my opinion).

Now, if you've actually bothered to read all of this so far (God bless ya!), it means I only accept the following starships into my X-Wing lists:

- Millennium Falcon / YT-1300

- Outrider / YT-2400

- Z-95 Headhunter

- Y-Wing

- X-Wing

- A-Wing

- B-Wing

- TIE Fighter

- TIE Advanced

- TIE Bomber

- TIE Interceptor

- TIE Defender

- Lambda-class shuttle

- Slave I / Firespray

If I bothered with buying into another faction - the Scum and Villainy one - I would probably also be down with the various bounty hunter ships and Xizor's fighter. And if I actually wanted to spend money on any of the "epic" ships, I'd probably use the 'Blockade Runner' and the Rebel transport. And that's it.

The K-Wing? The TIE Punisher? The Rebels stuff? The Raider? The Phantom (both versions)? This stuff just doesn't feel like Star Wars to me...

So call me boring or call me closed-minded. Or even call me a bad tactician for not accepting unique units for my game. It's just the way I am.

Anyway, interesting thread, zlynn22!

I will buy everything but I'll probably only want one of each at best 2 advanced protos

I need to see the phantom's point cost. It sounds versital. If a squad of them is formidable, that's a lot of ghosts on my shelf. Expecting to start with 2.

Nah FFG is smart, and now with Dat Mouse in house they are NOT LOOKING BACK at the worst so called star wars.

:D

Nah... they are making THE NEW STAR WARS.

P.S. FU georgie!

So no, I do not feel that way and I love the Rebels and watch it with my son. It started off rough, just like Clone Wars, but it is getting its feet now. It really is beginning to recapture that original Star Wars feel with a Smugler's Ship that houses a group of Rebels looking to make a difference. Looking forward to Season 2.

Eh...you haven't seen 'Return of the Jedi', yet? Or...I'm confused, when did you discover Star Wars?

Because, seriously, the 'Rebels' TV series is EVERY. SINGLE. CAMPAIGN. that we played in the West End Games RPG back in the 80s. I mean, the Ghost crew are pretty much verbatim copies of the characters we played. From the ISB agents to the Inquisitors, it's...I mean, this series just is the old WEG RPGs.

Yeah it reminds me of most of the few Dark Times campaigns my groups have run as well, as well as many of our local cell, and small spec ops team campaigns. While I definitely prefer the naval, privateer, and fighter squad campaigns we do I still prefer the small team on an up-gunned freighter campaigns.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that Hondo becomes the first canon Rebel Privateer. Also that he still has his ship from TCW because it's class and the Pelta were my two favorite ship designs from the series.

But I have two little boys (5 and 7 and the moment) and therefore I kind of grow up again, but this time with rebels and some old, weird stuff from a long forgotten past. ("Daddy, who is Han Solo?" Nope, they haven't watched the original trilogy yet, call me old-fashioned, but I don't think it's suitable for kids that young. And this way I can tell stories from a long time ago myself, hope they'll have a blast when finally watching the movies and recognizing all the stuff they already heard about).

So... you let them watch a show where more storm troopers and people die (visually not taking into account space combat) then in the first 3 movies combined? Even more so with action? It is ok cause its cartoons? Im so confused. That isn't old fashion, that's just confusing.

What say you? Anyone else share my "if it didn't exist when I discovered Star Wars, it doesn't exist" mentality?

Then I don't wanna see you playing Horton, Howlrunner, Backstabber, and a host of other EU retconned characters, because, well they don't exist.

Now I'm not saying you can't do it, you are a free person and can spend your money how ever you would like. I'm just saying your logic is pretty flawed.

I agree with the OP. I will personally be buying the bounty hunters but not the other ships. The "Star Wars" that appeals to me is the original trilogy and basically the EU stuff up through the end of the 90s. The newer content just doesn't have the same feel. Although let's not forget FFG has done an amazing job of releasing the best EU ships (sans the inexplicable absence of the assault gunboat). There might be more to the picture - like being required as a licensee to release tie-in content.

This is one of the better waves I have seen in a while. Love all the ships, with the inquisitor tie being the least favorite.

I will probably buy 1-2 Inquisitor ties, 1 Ghost, 2-3 Punishers, 2 Mist Hunters and 1 gozanti.

Maybe 3 mist hunters for the upgrade cards and optional paintjob.

Im shocked at the amount of you 'old hands' that keep saying episode and not CHAPTER!!

The episodes are the mid 90's CGI festivals

The OT is Starwars, Chapter V the empire strikes back and Chapter VI return of the jedi.

Since Rebels is atrocious and I don't collect Scum, Wave 8 holds nothing for me. I'll be excited for the Gozanti instead... so I can get some repainted TIE Fighters and new pilots then sell the huge ship.

Wave 5 almost did it for me, but I bought 2 of each...

I did give rebels a chance and the more I watched the angrier I got, I watched the second season double episode hoping with Vader in there the empire would no longer be a joke but no he just made them look even more incompetent.

The empire is staffed by people from the special class and the "heroes" come off as jerks and bullies as a result and I can't stand cowards that prey on the weak.

I so much agree with Hobojebus. Rebels is just so indefinitly shallow it hurts. However, it a kids. show. It needs to be black and white. So, even though one can excuse lack of depth via target audience that doesn't mean I nees to buy into that. As a customer I am free to buy what I like, since Rebels doesn't interest me I will pass this time.

I haven't watched all the episodes and am personally on the fence on how good the series is. But in the second season opener doesn't Vader single handedly take out a squad of A wings, and destroy an epic ship? Hardly incompetent.

I will add my boys aged 7 and 5 LOVE the show. That matters for the health of the game long run, well the Star Wars franchise. It is a kids show and not everyone cup of tea though.
