Should cloak be errata to a maximum of 4 agility?

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

So we all know as of now cloak adds 2 to agility which makes ships have 4 agility dice since the only ship that has cloak has 2 agility. However with the new scum ship you could give that to a Star Viper and have 5 agility.

Going on the principle that green dice were made weaker than red dice IMHO agility should never be higher than the highest PW firepower value cloaked or not. Since no ships have 4 agility and that phantom only has 4 firepower do you think that the cloak token should read.

  • increase agility by 2 to a maximum of 4.

You can still roll 5 or more green dice (range bonus, obstructions) and going from 3 agility to 4 agility is still a boost for the cloaking token not to mention the decloak mechanics so giving Xizor a cloaking device would still be viable.

What do you think?

can it attack when cloaked?

no?

will said cloak not just fart out on you 25% of the time for no reason?

no?

have I ever rolled more than 1 natural evade even on six greens?

no?

seems fine to me

Xizor doesn't need a cloaking device, he just needs a couple lackeys to take fire for him :)

If he had access to ACD this might be an issue, but right now I just don't think it'll be that strong. It'll give him some mobility during the activation phase in the first round, but that's about it.

But really this doesn't matter because Prince just wants to be near his meat shields anyways. I really can't foresee a concern with balance here at all.

Meh, without ACD it could have 6 agility and be fine I think.

have I ever rolled more than 1 natural evade even on six greens?

Its funny cause its true!!!

You and I have very different definitions of what we think is funny...

No.

It has a 25% of breaking on the first turn you use it. You've got less than a 50% chance of keeping it for three rounds. Plus, cloak is only truly powerful with ACD. Still nice without it, but not broken by any means.

However with the new scum ship you could give that to a Star Viper and have 5 agility.

With no Advanced Cloaking Device and a good chance of the cloak outright breaking down.

(remembers all the Fels who have been one shot at Range 3)

Nope.

Range 3

Behind obstacle

Stealth device

Authrusters

None of those can save you from green dice.

Not scared of the ShadowViper.

But y'all better watch out, Invisibossk is coming!

the only thing that can save you from green dice: auto-thrusters

can xizor already take thrusters? yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez :D

you could also take stygium, but who'll save the stygium from fickle red dice?

also, invisabossk is one of at least 4 reasons cloak is small base only :(

Bossk don't care about yo rules text.

Because he's... um...

So 5 agility with one blank being modified to an evade or 5 agility with an evade token. Decisions decisions.

thrusters won't fail when your cloaking inevitably does :P

Autothrusters for sure. Now that my brain has registered that you discard the Cloaking Device on an eyeball, SPA is a horrible way to spend two points. You'd probably get more out of using those two points as an initiative bid in the average game.

Strictly-speaking, SPA at 2pts is better than either Hull or Shield. Now, it doesn't really matter at the end of turn you lose Cloaking Device (unless Corran decides to shoot you), but it's still guaranteed mitigation, and if it cancels even 1 incoming result it's done Hull/Shield for less.

But it's not guaranteed to mitigate anything. If you cloak while engaging it could end up dying before you even get shot at. If something else gets shot at then SPA didn't mitigate anything. Autothrusters is more likely to come into play and is able to mitigate multiple damage in a single round. SPA is a two point gamble on top of the points that are already being gambled on the Cloaking device.

aye, as said above it could piff off worthlessly for no return whatsoever

I honestly don't understand why, since it could've been a great bit of defensive tech for aces in crappier ships (cobra) with so many built in failsafes (takes action, can't attack on set-up turn, free evade action can't be stacked with other evades etc.)

It hasn't been released yet and people are asking about nerfs? Ya think you might want to play a couple of games before asking for a modification of the rules?

To answer the OP's question, no.

Where you be when your cloaking device fails? ;)

I honestly don't see the cloaking device being very competitive, simply because of its unreliability — same reason we don't see Lando very often.

No, because it's not an advanced cloaking device. You basically trade in your attack for that round for 2 extra defense dice and a possibility to decloak in an advantageous position the next round (if the cloak does not fail outright). It's very situational and basically allows you to protect a unit during the alpha strike (and perhaps some shenanigans later down the road), but other than that, it's nothing game breaking.

Not even the mighty autothrusters can save me. The dice wait till I use my focus and then they come up all eyes.
