Is anyone here still interested in Wave 7?

By gundamv, in X-Wing

I just want to share my perspective.

I grew up watching the OT. Well, I watched the original OT first. Then, I watched the Special Editions. I only know characters and ships from the OT movies. I know little from the EU (like, the only characters I know from that are Kyle Katarn and Jan ors from the Jedi Outcast and Admiral Thrawn because everyone keeps talking about him). Recently, I also started watching animated features such as Star Wars Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Basically, when it comes to Star Wars, if it appears on TV, I know about it. If it doesn't, then I probably don't know about it.

So, with that background, having three consecutive sets of mostly EU-only ships, i.e. Waves 5-7, was a disappointment for me personally. (I understand that others' views are different on this, and I'm not trying to spark any debates, just wanting to share my perspective). The only non-EU ships were reprints - the Most Wanted Pack. IG-2000 and Hound's Tooth are arguably tangentially related to the OT movies, as IG-88 and Bossk both briefly appeared in ESB, but their ships did not appear IIRC. Wave 7, for me, was somewhat of a nadir. I recognized none of the ships and was concerned that all FFG would release is more EU stuff (which many of you seem to like but which my friends and I don't care much for).

As such, when the Ghost/Phantom and TIE Inquisitor (I'll just call it that) were revealed yesterday, I was ecstatic. I'm looking forward to playing with those ships. At the same time, I am also happy that there were 2 EU ships - Punishing One and Mist Hunter. I'll probably never play with those two, but it was good to see that movie-only fans and EU fans could both get something out of a Wave.

Conclusion and TLDR: I understand that different people are looking for different things in a game, and a good game should have something for everyone. I think FFG has done a good job with regard to that.

Edit: In terms of playing style, my friends and I play casually. That is, we seldom go to tournaments and prefer to just "play for fun."

Wouldn't it be great of FFG starts to make each wave one half EU and one half Disney Canon ships? Preferably with each half having the same upgrade cards.

The recentently previews wave 8 is to me infinitely more exciting than anything in wave 7.

I'll be buying wave 7 because i always tend to buy at least one of everything but *nothing* in 7 is particularly interesting to me.

Wave 8 on the other hand only really has one duff ship , the punishing one, that just looks rubbish but again i'll probably end up with one.

The only difference about wave 8 for me is that while i normally buy two or four of a ship (depedning on PV) i can only see myself buying one of each of wave 8 as many of them are very 'unique' ships and not really stuff i'll want squadrons of.

Phantom is awful

I don't know that I'd say that until I saw the dial, the cost, and the pilot abilities. It's a 3 attack Z-95 that can take a systems slot, a crew, and a turret upgrade. It could end up being decent in lists even without the Ghost.

I meant it in the sense that the ship itself is so ugly I wouldn't take it even if it was the King Hell God Emperor Starfighter of Death.

I couldn't agree more - the Phantom is a terrible design.

I'd have to say, though ... the FFG model looks... ok ... much better than I expected.

I'll hold judgement until I see a close shot, but I think they may have just saved this one too.

They Did.

I think I'll never take it and just glue the model into its slot on the Ghost

I don't think there is a slot. From the pictures of the model in the case it looks like the ghost has the phantom already modeled attached, as well as a separate model.

Hmm, looking at where the wings would have to slot into the Ghost, you're probably right. Oh well, maybe I'll use it as a cat toy.

I'm upset that I'm not more excited about Wave 8 than 7, but the K-wing and the Punisher have me thrilled. Really, the Punisher and the Raider have caused me to flip back to the Dark Side! Nothing but Imperial grey for me again for the next two waves! lol

Let me be 100% clear: I will buy 4 Khazicstan Fighters. 2 Hound's Toothses (yes, I hated typing "Toothses"), 3 TIE Punners, and 4 K-Wings.

Because that's how I buy ships.

Also: I've been wanting to hit "like" on a number of posts this thread, but I've hit my like limit for the day. Just like last GenCon.

Why not type teeth then?

I'm pretty sure the correct plural is "Toothies".

EDIT: I would also accept "Toofy-Woofies".

If your not familiar with the ship from rebels, the phantom's wings fold up, kinda like the lambda but more so, when it docks.

Nevertheless, you can clearly see the phantom's cockpit on the back of the ghost model.

Yeah, I realised that while looking at it, I just doubt the Phantom model will have folding wings since they're not necessary for packaging like the Lambda.

You know i never even thought that was the reason for making the lambdas wings fold, i just thought they were making it more 'realistic' despite it being unsuitable for games (i always hate seeing lambdas flown with folded wings).

But when you point out its a packaging issue that makes so much more sense, the only other option would have been a plug in dorsal fin.

Wave 7 is "The Bomb!!" (Pun intended!) I love the KWing and the Tie Punisher and am so excited for those two ships alone! The Scum ships are icing on the cake. If we count the Raider as part of this wave, then Im ECSTATIC!! I think this has been the best wave of all EIGHT! Getting the Gozanti is something I just figured "had" to happen if FFG listened to their customers at all! Hence, I foresee any/all ships that are discussed a lot will be future releases!

The only reason I am a bit more excited for Wave 8 than Wave 7 is just the shear amount of upgrade cards. As much as I love the upgrades we are getting, we are getting a much wider variety in Wave 8.

I am definitely interested in what all of the crew cards with the Ghost are going to do

Through I really wish that the Raider was released for a few months before FFG announced wave 8. It makes buying the raider less enjoyable some how. That being said, I intend to buy at least two of the Tie Punisher, and maybe a K-Wing. Though I am glad the Wave 8 will release some new Tie Fighters.

I am still waiting for some new Tie Bomber Pilots.

As interested as I ever was. Still buying 2 Punishers.

The least enjoyable part about the Raider is the long wait. It was announced back around Christmas and it still hasn't officially hit the store shelves yet.

S**T Yeah I'm still interested. FCS plus munition on the Punisher. Bomb plus Slam on the KWing. A Multipurpose fighter for Scum in the Kiraszh. And painting the YV-666 like a winnebago with wings. What's not to be excited about?

I hadn't thought of that but that is an amazing idea. I never understood the love for that ship it's a shipping crate with wing nublets. I throw up a little in my mouth everytime I see it. God awful design saved by Mel Brooks and the Weasel, thanks guys :)

I've suspected for a while that this might be the main reason FFG hasn't made the Assault Gunboat. It's a small fighter, but the wings are so spread out it might not fit in either of the small base packages, no matter how it's oriented.

The "medium" packages (StarViper, K-wing, Punisher, Mist Hunter) probably have room.

It's 10x15.1x7.2. Shorter than the X-wing, taller than but not as wide as the K-wing.

The short length actually makes it easier, because it can be rotated along the X-axis (assuming facing nose) quite well.

i wasn't that interested to begin with, i'll pick up 2 Kirahx and we'll see from there.

As a whole, wave eight excites more more than seven, but of everything I like the Punnisher the most.

Welp, one wave after releasing the Scum X-wing, they're releasing a Scum B-wing. You know, that thing that pushed the X-wing out of the meta? Yeah.

I'm going to be eyeing the costings for that ship with interest.

(The ship itself looks pretty, though.)

24pts minimum, most likely.

  • PS3 generic, no EPT, 24pts (miiiiiight be 23, but so far they've done 1pt/1PS for the Scum EPT generics)
  • PS5 generic, EPT, 26pts
  • PS6 4-LOM, EPT, 27pts
  • PS7 Zuckus, EPT, 28pts

And yeah, the Mist Hunter was always sort of fugly, FFG absolutely saved the sculpt.

Absolutely! They stole a few notes from the old navy Prowlers, I think, and it absolutely nails the look accordingly.

At 24pts for a PS3... hrm. Tricky. Not worth jousting with like a B-wing (You've effectivelp paid for a Dagger Squadron with 1 less PS), but on the other hand you've broken close to even on getting that crew+systems combo rockin', with an Illicit... Which is to say, it's a Dagger-squadron-only B-wing you make worthwhile by giving it cool toys.

I think I like that trade.

My prediction bieng that 4-LOM will have no EPT
