Ghost and Phantom

By USCGrad90, in X-Wing

For me the biggest question is if you can dock the Phantom mid game or not.

If you can do that, it could change things a lot. Could start with it undocked and rush it to the Ghost when it takes a little damage. Could launch it for a single pass at a high value target then dock it again, and so on.

Would be a sweet idea if you could just bump into ghost to dock the ship.

We're in the middle of a dogfight! No time for docking!

If you can't dock it makes the ship much less interesting than I thought that it would be.

The title cards read as though you cannot re-dock mid game.

I don't see anything that implies that. It does seem that you start with it docked. The Ghost title says to equip the title Phantom to an assault shuttle and dock it with the Ghost. That most likely means it starts docked.

I would be a little bit surprised if you can re-dock it, but I don't see anything so far that would say couldn't. Even if you can't with the Nashtah Pup that doesn't mean you couldn't with the Ghost.

I would think something like "Action: If you are at range one of a ship with the Ghost title, you may dock". would work. This lets your opponent prevent the docking though action denial. It might be better to have it be the Ghost that needs to spend the action though, so that there is an actual cost being paid if you chose to dock.

Even if you can't with the Nashtah Pup that doesn't mean you couldn't with the Ghost.

That couldn't even really be an option for the Pup.

No I agree, considering how that ship works. But I wanted to head off any sort of 'well no other ship can do it' argument.

Nothing says you can't, but nothing says you can either.

Currently the only known way to dock is before the game starts. You dock by equipping the title cards.

Do new repeatable in-game effects/mechanics usually get a reference card? The Nashtah Pup doesn't but that's a once per game thing. The only rule cards that come with the Ghost are Bombs and Cluster Mines.

Seeing how it's a Large ship, those come with a rule booklet, so the rules for docking mid-game could be there. So it doesn't have to be on a card.

So I'm wondering - with no bomb icon - how does this ship equip any or all of the bomb tokens that it seems to come with?

Maybe Sabine crew gives you a bomb icon? And if so..... Holy crap! B-Wing Bombers FTW!!!!!

There's a second ship with unknown upgrades.

I'd be surprised if she actually gives a bomb icon as crew, as that'd be too broad. More likely that she grants a Bomb icon or two when used as a Shuttle Pilot and docked with the Ghost.

I would guess the Phantom just has a bomb slot. Compounded by the fact that one of them, based on the a partial card and a token, appears to be a Thermal Detonator. That's kind of thematic. Toss a ThermDet out the window of the shuttle. (assuming in atmosphere, of course)

What happens when your electric windows fail and your already set the timer on the Thermal Detonator? :P

Well that's awfully similar to something that happened to me in the Saga Edition RPG... The results were unfortunate.

I like the mount for the Ghost. It has 3 points of support instead of 1 on the Decimator. Seems they got the point 1 doesn't work on a very large ship.

Well not according to http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/ - the attack shuttle has Turret, Crew, Title, and Modification options. Sure it isn't final, but where did he get the info that it has turret and crew? Has it not been revealed at Gen Con or somewhere? Would have had to be to show up on the squad builder site like that.

That being said I'm surprised that the tiniest ship in the game has crew and 3 attack dice. It seems to be a balance thing since the Ghost/Phantom combo is almost certainly a full 100 points. It will be very interesting to see what carries over when docked (if anything). It feels weird that the Ghost only has 2 crew slots though, given it's size. So maybe the Phantom lets it get the third crew.

I don't see a problem with Sabine crew adding a bomb icon (is she one of the pilots for the a Ghost, or just the Phantom?). It is a fluffy ability that they haven't made much use of yet.

Having blank pilots who add upgrade slots would be pretty cool too. Though if the crew Sabine did that, then her pilot ability would have to be much more interesting, otherwise would just add her to someone else.

Was mentioned in the reveal article text.

Yup. It's not very mysterious, in this case.

Thank you. So it COULD be more...

I think the Ghost expansion is easily the most awesome single expansion that X-Wing has ever seen. And I'm seriously wondering what point cost the Phantom will have.... because if they make it too cheap, people might buy 4+ ghost expansions just to run all 4 phantom pilots.

Also the phantom is the first ship with no generics!

Also, how bout the modding community eh? Can't wait to see the custom ghost mods that actually put the phantom IN the ghost!

I'm a huge fan of bringing carrier ops to this game, but I don't think the Ghost or Gozanti are really designed as catch, repair, rearm and release platforms. They are both a bit too small and unwieldy to do anything more than dock/releay a ship in the middle of a firefight.

Unless you just want to dock a ship. And then use the launch as a sort of superboost. That could get interesting. :)

I was confused by this. The unpainted ship shown in the GenCon display case had a different mount (like what you describe) than the painted model pics.

As far as I can tell, the final version of the ship comes with 1 huge stand base. A first for large ships.
