Any nationals news or somewhere that's covering it?

By mege, in Star Wars: Armada

I can't find anything in the usual places...

I would kill for some updates too. I'm really curious to see who all is doing well.

My buddies are there and they are currently 15-5 and 16-6 and they just stopped for a dinner break before the last of 3 rounds for today. They said about 40 dropped after the first round. I will see if I can find any other info from them.

40 people dropped? People just signing up for the promo? Or FFG having a big software snafu like they did with X-Wing?

He said lots of them dropped because of bad first games. I guess they assumed if they went like 0-10 they had no chance in a 100 person tourny.

So the 3rd and final round of the day is almost done and there were 38 people playing and my one friend finished out the day 23-7 so we will see if that is enough to get to the finals. There was one person who was 20-0 going into the 3rd round.

He is flying a no squadron imperial build with 1 Vic I (with Assault Missiles and Xi7), 1 Vic II (Warlord, Xi7, Screed) and Glad II (Demolisher, Engine Techs, Assault Missiles).

There is no finals to get in to. Armada events are 5 rounds with that number of players. No more, no less.

Ahh...didnt realize that. The schedule said the finals were tomorrow so that wasnt clear. Thanks.

So the third round just finished up and I was too hungry to grab a standings picture, 69 players remained. The top player was 29-1. Next was 28-2 and there were one or two players at 27-3. The 16th place was 19-11. Two more rounds to go tomorrow, and though I will be playing I will try to get pics or discription of the winning fleet!

Phwoar - not a list I would have expected, especially the Vic 1. Good on him.

Very nice guy demoralizing build. I really should have thought more about the Glad 1 with ACM swarm.

I really expect him to win. He's tactically very sound.

I want more info on his tactics. . . .

Won't spoil that for him. No insights on his tactics until after the finals are done today. I dropped out and won't see the final two matches. I may stop be and see how it's going.

Interearing enough one guy was running 6 Corvettes I wondered how he will end up.

My take away was when you see Gladiators with ACM is to run as far away as possible. My build was offense heavy and I needed better defenses.

My thoughts were that if you could kite him staying out of close range and use fighters to peck away at the gladiators you might have a chance.

That's not accurate unless it was a different guy that was 20 after round two. I played at table 1 with him. He was running a Vic1 with Screed 2 Glad 1's with Assualt Concussion misses and a third Vic 1 Demolisher with Assualt Concussion Missle Launchers. His third game round 4 had destroyed all his opponents ships except a lone Corvette and several Awing squadrons.

Not the same guy....my friend sent me pics and he definitely had 2 Vics and a Glad. His first opponent had 1 AFII, Neb, CR90 and 3 squadrons.

My buddy played the 6 corvette build round 2 and he barely won 5-5 with an 8 point margin of victory. I agree Glads with ACM are crazy good but I have played enough and won enough against to agree with you on the staying away. Most of the time one of them is a Demo and I usually lure it away while my squadrons hammer the other ships.

I love the GSD 1 and ACMs. The fact that I get all black dice on my aides means I need to deploy them appropriately and set up the better shots.

I look forward to playing him at worlds :)

I hope to be good enough to make world's next year. . . Got to lab test more. . .

Good to hear some info. I will be looking forward to any batreps or tournament reports, or heck any general impressions that come out of this.

I posted this on my thread as well, where I will post more updates but here is a round 4 update.

So during round 4 it seems over half of the fleets are two AF mk2s, they either have ECMs or AP, and nearly all have enhanced armaments. There are a few other rebel builds including two corvette swarms. One of those was at table 2 (3rd-4th place) but lost 9-1. The imperial builds seem to be two ships builds, however at table one (1st-2nd) there are two 4 ship imperial builds. They both use Screed, Demolisher, all class 1 ship variants, and no squadrons. One is 2 Vic-2 Glad, the other is 1-Vic-3 Glad with the Glads having ACMs.

More info come!

Edit: at table 1 the 1 Vic-3 Glad list just pulled in a 8-2 win.

From what I heard most of the top players are running no squadrons...this makes me very sad.

I've only gotten to play Armada a few times, but I've had this terrible fear that squadrons are ultimately pointless. Sad to see the top tier players winning without fighters. The game doesn't really feel like Star Wars without squadrons.

They are not pointless....I consistently play one of the top 5 players in the Gencon tournament with my Rebels and he doesnt run squadrons and I beat him a lot. He is a really good player but he has a really hard time against my build. Bottom line is you really need to practice squadrons to understand their dynamics. The imperials can be very straight forward and people tend to gravitate towards this.

Think of Armada like an RTS. Your ships are both your resources gatherers and combat, squadrons are a resource you spend.

Now Nationals is not a complete representation of what the meta could be (temporarily though I think that gets destroyed fast since I don't think there is a meta). Nationals is just a current test bed and people will evolve everything from there.

I asked the tourney organizer he said the guy at table 1 won all 3 games yesterday 10-0 didn't have a perfect game this morning. Game 5 he was playing against a VSD and two Gladiators with some squadrons.

Pretty much he uses a hammer and a very large anvil. In our match and the one he was playing in round 5 it appears he set up with the VSD a gladiator and Demolisher shielded on the opposite side of the VSD from his opppnent. He had a lone gladiator out to flank the enemy. You could engage the lone gladiator but then he could move in behind you with his main force. Or you could choose to hit at the main force with the lone ship to the rear.
