What else deals damage through shields?

By DarthEnderX, in X-Wing

So, with the reveal of the Advanced Homing Missiles, apparently, because of the way the weapon is worded, it ignores shields. Even though the card doesn't specify anything like "This attack ignores shields".

If people hadn't said it, I wouldn't have even known that it's wording made it do that. I just assumed that any time you were dealt a damage card, if you had shield tokens, you lost a shield token instead. But apparently that's not the case?

So my question is, is there anything else that deals damage or causes it's effect through shields that I just never realized before that it was supposed to be played that way?

Proton bombs. Why else would they cost 5 points?

If an effect causes "damage", it hits shields normally. If it says "deal a damage card" then you do just that, deal a damage card.

Do what the card says and not what it doesn't.

Does chewbacca flip?

Chewbacca says "If you are dealt..."

These say "Deal a..."

Well, there's Porkins. But maybe you already realized that.

Chewbacca is not a gymnast.

Does chewbacca flip?

Only when you don't let him win dejarik.

Interesting. Thanks.

Assume I realize nothing and give me any examples you can think of.

I like that Rexler can hit a ship with AHM, resolve the crit and flip, spend his focus and make them resolve it again...

Shield ignoring

Dice ignoring

Action independent

Attack independent

Area of effect

Do what the card says and not what it doesn't.

Repeated (and bolded) for emphasis. I wish they had a reference card in every product that just said, "Upgrade cards: This expansion includes one or more upgrade cards. When equipped to a ship, do what the card says and not what it doesn't."

I think the 16 page faq including errata, clarifications, and even rule changes proves that isn't always true.

Advanced Homers have Range 1-3 on Rhymer.
Does this make him playable?

Advanced Homers slide a damage under shields early in the game.
Does this make Saboteur viable?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in both these cases it would only work if the Crit dealt was one of the following: Minor Explosion, Thrust Control Fire or Munitions Failure

Right?

If Rhymer gets a 4 point discount yes, until then no. At close to 30 points he will still never make his points back.

with EM, he gets a four point discount on double Advanced Proton Torps :P

38 for PTL, double APT shots, and the new green engine thing is a far improvement over 42

competitive? nope. 4 point discount? yes :P

Unfortunately, this. Rhymer is that guy that you constantly think he's better than he is. Yeah a lot of flexibility in his missles but still has to lock onto and hit his target. He can hurt something sure, but for his points better invest in someone else.

Jek Porkins does damage to himself through shields. ;)

Face down damage cards can be fliped even if there are shield tokens

Saboteur or Akal Colzet can both flip cards face-up.

But yeah, the only effects which can cause damage whilst you still have shield tokens are:

  • Proton Bombs
  • Jek Porkins (to himself!)
  • Advanced Homing Missiles
  • An Epic ship ramming you

Rhymer is good, but as noted, the trouble is making him pay for himself.

Extra Munitions, Advanced Proton Torpedoes, Push The Limit, Twin Ion Engines MkII makes for a devastating fighter.....but also 40 points - into the 'large ship and named TIE defender' category. The trick will be figuring out how the hell to keep him alive long enough to empty his torpedo tubes, because unfortunately the Empire has no access to either Serrissu with Bodyguard or Biggs, and it's hard to imagine a higher priority target on the board.
