Must...read...other stories...

By Dreamshadow, in CoC General Discussion

Need some help. I have some of the Summons of the Deep series of Asylum packs, and I want to read more of the story. Is there someplace I can find it online, or otherwise obtain it? I'm trying to get the other packs, but just haven't gotten them all yet.

dont know where it might be online but honestly its a pretty bad story. it starts off not so well and the last two seem like the story was rushed just so it comes to conclusion by the 6th pack.

the idea was kinda neat, not sure if its original since i dont read much non-lovecraft mythos stuff.

It's annoying me that I don't know it all. I guess I'll just have to wait till I can get the last couple of Asylum packs. Stories 2,3 and 6 will have to suffice.

The CCG card flavor text was recorded by jgt7771. Read it here: http://chris-long.com/cthulhu/lists/flavor.cfm. It's a good read of the game so far. Nothing can replace the cards themselves as the story of the game.

The Julia story has not been transcribed yet. You could trade for it. It is written by Nate French exclusively for LCG cycle one Summons of the Deep.

Hundreds of mythos inspired tales exist. Pre-Lovecraft writers such as Lord Dunsany, Arthur Machen, Robert Chambers, even Algernon Blackwood are very important to read. Lovecraft contemporaries are equally vital, such as Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E Howard, August Derleth, Robert Bloch, and many more, including Houdini himself. Waves of fiction writers followed, noteably in the 1960s and continuing to this day. Nobody writes like Lovecraft. He is the master of the mythos and at the heart of the genre (though Dunsany was his own icon). Lovecraft's work exists far from in a vaccuum and is diminished when considered alone. The other works have everything to do with the grand scope of weird fiction that includes the cthulhu mythos, dreamlands, and beyond.

But yeah, his is the best. There is some craft to the Julia story, but it is very weak. It is now part of the cannon I mention above, which also includes lesser stuff that could just as well fade into obscurity. One might say, "I could have done better," or "Why couldn't they have paid a published or somewhat accomplished writer." But the truth is, this was Nate's work. He wrote it and put it out there. You can pan it if you like, but he's a published cthulhu mythos writer - in my opinion, fledgling and not so good. But then there's opinions and there's guys who write their own stories.

Good sentiment, Shoes.

I'm certain I could NOT have written a better story in six short installments.

Thanks chick, occasionally I get some wood on the ball. Go sox!
