Mines as obstacles

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

Has anyone ever tried using Proximity Mines (And soon Connor Nets and Cluster Mines) as obstacles in a match?

Essentially when gathering your 3 obstacles, you can also pick from mines.

Is there any reason this wouldn't work? Seems like it could add an interesting dynamic.

"Minefield" is a terrain feature in my campaign rules where you place six proximity mines instead of asteroids. It was a pretty interesting option. They cover a lot more area and are worse for the person that hits them, but once tripped they go away, opening up large chunks of the board.

Yes. Quite regularly we use 3D printed mines. The bases are traced from the proximity mine template and we use those rules.

Mine field fights are great fun! Noobs be crashin' and blowin'.

Interesting. Would also be challenging if you had Andrasta on a Firespray and put out some more to contend with as you moved...

The fact that they don't obstruct attacks, and go away when they detonate, yet have a much higher damage potential sounds like it could be very interesting. I'll have to try it out sometime.

We have in story leagues, we went with a higher volume but it was a lot of fun.

Reminds me of the minefields in the old PC xwing game. Except I think they shot at you.

Another fun idea would be to have "hidden" mines on certain asteroids. You'd have to think of a mechanic to record their location so the enemy doesn't know where they are.

This is one of the coolest ideas I've heard for casual games in a while. I never thought of it, but it seems so obvious as a potential story element.

You could just put a little sticker or tape on the underside of the asteroid and you could flip it when you hit it.

Hidden mines could be 'found' via rolling an unmodified Green die.

Depending on how often you'd like them to potentially impact play use the following rules:

Less frequent - On a focus or evade trigger the effects of the mine.

More Frequent - On a blank trigger mine effects.

Will Dash trigger any mines that are used as "obstacles?"

Will Dash trigger any mines that are used as "obstacles?"

Yes because technically they're mines. just replaced the obstacles.

Just a side thought...add in a few Seismic Charges. The rule for them is if your base lands within R1, or your Template intersects R1, roll 1 red dice. If its a hit, suffer the results, then remove the Charge from play. Any other result the charge does not go off and it remains in place.

This can simulate modern mines that have counters and will let a number of ships pass over before activating the detonator for the next one.
