Skirmish mode?

By Bitterman, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

So our gaming group played through the Imperial Assault campaign, and have since become obsessed (some more than others... I'm hugely into it) with Skirmish mode.

We've now gone back to Descent, seeing as it's basically the same game. We're playing through the campaign again... but I would really like to come up with rules for a Skirmish mode, too, i.e. a 1v1 battle game rather than a story-driven quest, working from the Imperial Assault template.

Before I dive into coming up with rules and points costs and such like, has anyone tried this already?

I think this was much easier in descent 1st edition.

Heroes and different sized monster groups had their own points values.

RTL and SOB had decks of cards for generating skirmish sized maps.

There was even an overlord vs overlord mission that played very much like a skirmish.

The levelling up in 1st edition wasn't as good as 2nd edition for campaign play, but it is perfect for a dog's of war game where you want to build a squad and level up individual models between games.

There has been a good amount of discussion about this- I don't know that anyone has successfully done it. One of the most difficult bits in designing something like this is assigning the point values. While IA and D2E have a lot in common, there is a good deal that separates them, as well.

I´m trying to make a skirmish game, where both sides choose monsters and heroes.

Each side would be 4 heroes and 3 monster groups.

Because both sides can choose from the same pool of heroes and monsters, you don´t need points values.

I have been looking at DOTA2 for the setup.

Are the skirmish mode i Imperial assault "one of" games, or are they played as a part of a campaign?
