Painting: Glad Vampire

By Daft Blazer, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi - long time lurker and my first post.

I'm a first time painter, I borrowed some paints, brushes from my gaming bud and went to work!!

First up - A Gladiator with blood red fangs, the Glad "Vampire" or Gladcular???? ;)

Paired with his hunting partner White Fang lol

I've tried to make them look a little less patchy, but not too uniform either! The white one has some burn marks from a recent engagement. The painting is a little more textured in its effect, my iPad has not captured all the detail.

The mat is made from felt, it's been sprayed with glitter, and picks up the light nicely - and the stars twinkle. It's a lot more subtle than the photos suggest.

I'm thinking of adding some blue light reflections.

I have painted all the stands black - it makes a big difference to the look on the table, even if you don't paint the models themselves.

I'll post up a few more later.

I like them!

How did you paint the scorch marks? Airbrush?

Could be an airbrush, Could also be gentle drybrushing/stippling...

We may just have to wait to see :)

I do like the subtler colour across the whole hull as well - you can still pick out some of those odd panels, but they're not as Glaringly different, and *that*, I really like.

I like the faded look of the red tips.

Very veeeeeery nice, mate! I'd love to see some more of what you've got there.

The very light colouration was something I've been trying to get (between your stuff and DWRR's, I'm still trying to figure it out.... and naturally, failing spectacularly :P ). If I might ask, how'd you manage to keep the depth and slight variations for the hull?

I adore the little extra work on the carbon scoring and burn marks, Stippling, cotton, broken foam edged? It's fascinating and I fully regret not doing it a little more heavily on my GSD. That said, the blue hangar effects is convinging me to go back and work with that over the red I've worked up too, looks terrific. As does the glow from the bridge (Yellow glaze plus wash, or pure glaze?)

Hmm, sparkled felt mat.... Never thought about that one before. I might have to give it a try too. And huzzah for named ships, always makes things better.GSD Vampire , GSD White Fang , both hunters, both good namesakes.

I'm sincerely impressed. Bloody great to have you on board so welcome!

Thanks guys! Thanks for the feedback.

It's all done with a paint brush. The burn marks are dry brushed, in fact most of the painting is dry brushing, sort of varying how wet the dry brushing is. The only colour wash used was for the dark blue areas, which was then highlighted with gradually lighter areas of blue to try and simulate the glowing light. The yellow glow for the bridge lights is done with 3 layers of paint, working from Orange to yellow. I used a 0.25mm technical pen (Rotring) for the panel shadows.

I've been holding off painting the Victory, partly, they don't really need it, but you've encouraged me to take it on! I just have to work out if I want to create any colour makings like the Glads on it, nothing is really leaping out as an idea yet for it though.

These were the first two that I painted - Reb Potatoes. I was going for a 'patched up, rushed out of the space dock, essential repairs only and no time for anything fancy and straight into the front line!!' I initially tried just painting the odd panel here and there, but it it didn't look right to me.

The rough and ready look.

Two potatoes. My first effort at burn marks. They are still a work in progress.

The X wings were hard! I think I may have overdone the dirty look on them, I may go back to them as i have learnt a lot since I painted them.

... I like it. I don't mean just as in 'I clicked the like button', but I... well, I'm almost dumbfounded. I've universally hated the RAF Mk.II, but between the rough looking patchy hull, the burns, the faded paint, the burns, soft transition between the wings of the 'flag' frigate. Totally unfair that you're a first time painter and managed to get those out! :P Seriously well done, mate.

I'm glad others agree with me that the X-wing are a bloody pain to paint too! You can always use the edge of a brush and some thinned paints to just catch the leading edge a little more, that might help even out some of the dirt. But fighters are supposed to be dirty, too. Hmm, potato... I like that better than 'fatties' by far.

very nice! I like the simplicity on the gladiator model.

It's not the first time I'm seeing this, but the black stands really make the models shine.

Good job on the frigates, really like those!

Interesting take on the Gladiator. I really liked your Rebel Assault Frigate. Thanks for sharing sir!

"Bluh! I've come to suck your blud! Oh no, don't vorry; I vould never pierce your skin vith these fangs! I vill only blow you into little 'splody chuncks vith my missiles, and then I vill suck your blud!"

Very Nice!

Some shots of my attempts at squadrons:

Quite hard to capture with an iPhone. Much harder to paint than the capital ships!!

Nice, veeery nice mate. Blue looks better on Y-wings than I imagined it would. Very cool, and nice job with the engine effects. There's a lot of fun individuality between A wing frames (which I both love and drives me crazy :P ). Have you considered intra-squadron variations on the others?

The red-winged candy-cane striped B wings are pretty cool. And to be clear, that's not an insult with that candy-cane bit; I just have no idea how else to describe it. I genuinely like the stripes. If you want a little bit more definition, you can always go back in and lightly paint the white back into it. For whatever reason, painting the base colour, then the accent colour, then the base colour again as a tough up tends to produce a very clean line. I have no idea why, but it's been my experience. That's the closet thing I can help with as far as unsolicited advice. Oh, wait! With camera phones and most cameras in general, it's better to stage pictures out horizontally or in a slight parabolic arc (bowed) so it can focus clearly on more things at the same range, that way it has a tendency to make the pictures clearer. There, now that's all I've got.

So, what was the most fun fighter type to paint and the least?

Cheers mate, all advice is gratefully accepted, I'm a first time painter after all! I think the Y wings are the most fun to paint, followed by the B wings, Tie fighters I reckon will be the least fun, though I have not gone there yet. Really enjoying the whole painting aspect of the game, totally unexpected.

My B wings could do with more work, but I won't have time for a few weeks :(

Well a rainy Bank Holiday Monday, a cancelled board gaming day, can only mean one thing: painting!! I've been wanting to paint the VSD for some time, but it has been a bit too daunting for me. Decided to bight the bullet today. My approach was to keep it simple, and try some panel highlighting, as I have not tired this technique yet. I didm't want to overdo it, as I didn't want it to look too "bitty" - which i feel detracts from the strong form of the Star Destroyer.

I may do some glowing blue windows, not sure, I kind of like the mean dark look ;)

I painted my second VSD, similar colour scheme.
