Newbie Questions (Actions on Activation Phase)

By FirebatDZ, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello everyone, brand new player here, very excited about starting a community in my area. I have been reading some articles on certain ships and im a little confused about the tactics they mention involving actions during the activation phase. More specifically, the question is, can I do actions listed on my pilot card before the movement of the actual ship that I chose on the movement dial? Example, can I do a barrel roll on a tie interceptor then do a 3 length forward move followed by a "push the limit" card action to do a boost and thus ending with a stress token due to "Push the limit"?

I apologize if it's a very basic question, however I am actually quite surprised at how I and my friends got the basics of the game and we are thrilled to start making sessions weekly to play we are just trying to figure out the little details. I'm thankful in advance for answering the question, hope to hear from you all soon!

By default actions must be performed after you complete your maneuver. So you could do a 3 straight maneuver, barrel roll, and then trigger push the limit to boost.

Check Page 7 of the Core Rulebook for the steps taken when activating a ship.

Awesome thank you, I have seemed to find the article that gave me the initial doubt that created this topic here are the quotes pertaining the article on the Tie Punisher that seems as if you can do actions before movement:

One round he can drop his Cluster Mines out of his front guides during his perform action step, then barrel roll out of its way. Then next round, he can drop his Seismic Charges , again using his front guides, then perform a forward barrel roll action and a speed "4" Koiogran turn to get out of the blast zone. Next (round), he can perform a green maneuver and drop his second Cluster Mines out of his front guides, before performing yet another barrel roll action. In his fourth round of bombing, he can drop his last Seismic Charges. Even if he can't catch any enemies in its blast radius, deploying his Seismic Charges allows him to perform another barrel roll action before he reveals his maneuver dial, and that lends him the flexibility he needs to go wherever is best, depending on the board position.

The pilot in question has an ability that states when he drops a bomb he can use his front guides and when he does, he can perform a free barrel roll action. This is very specific to that pilot. The other way to do it is using advanced sensors.

The text you are quoting is describing the pilot "deathrain" from the new tie punisher expansion. He has a special ability that allows him to barrel roll immediately after dropping a bomb. Since seismic charges are dropped before revealing a dial he gets to do that, then immediately barrel roll, then reveal his dial and move (and then take his regular perform action step).

Another case that frequently trips up new players is advanced sensors. A system upgrade that allows you to take an action before revealing your dial, but then you skip your perform action step after you move.

Awesome, thank you everyone for the clarifications. I look forward to enjoying this game a lot :)

I just skimmed through the replies, so forgive me if this was mentioned

If you have advanced sensors equipped this let's you take an action (or 2 and a stress if you have push the limit) before you reveal your dial and then you skip your normal action phase

Only ships like the shuttle, bwing, Starviper if it had the title, ewing, phantoms and I maybe missing some, have the sensors slot upgrade
