Acrylic tokens... Are they tournament legal?

By Jamesjack2005, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I'm a noob to the game, but I am very excited. The game reminds me of a mix of chess with Star Wars CCG that I played in the 90s. All of the cardboard tokens can get annoying. If I buy acrylic or wood tokens, are they tournament legal?

Thanks,

James

Yes they are.

In fact, FFG often produces acrylic tokens as prizes for casual and premier level tournaments.

I don't mind the CB tokens, but am planning to get some templates, because they would seem to get more wear and tear and you don't have a ton of replacements lying around.

One question on the tokens - does size, shape and color matter?

I have seen a number of sites that offer tokens in different colors and hex shapes.

I would think you would want tokens that look very similar to the original cardboard tokens so they are easily recognizable.

Has anybody run into a problem with tournaments?

As long as the Icon is obvious there will be no problem, color can be whatever as long as you can tell what the icon is.

I recommend getting them in the "correct" color though. I played a round in the PA regional against a guy that had orange 3d translucent evade/focus tokens. The 3D made it difficult to see the icon, and the color made it so that it wasn't clearly apparent (especially since his ions were yellow) what it was... Given that wouldn't matter between focus/evade anyways.

I guess what I'm trying to say is get tokens that are immediately apparent to someone who has never seen them before what they are.

To be on the safe side at tournaments, I would bring a baggie of card board tokens with you if you are using custom tokens just in case you do run into an issue where your opponent complains that it is not obvious what the token represents.

^^ Ditto this. Anything that may be confusing is likely to get removed. Play it safe and make sure that any acrylics you buy are at least the right colours, and if you get wooden ones, make sure the icons leave no doubt as to what they are.

PS: Who makes wooden tokens? Just interested.

Yes some of the 3rd party tokens are super hard to tell what they are unless you get up close and personal.

And it's those tokens that just aren't worth the effort. You still need to be able to tell what they are without resorting to a magnifying glass.
