Printed tournament maps.

By WWHSD, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

The game Krosmaster Arena is similar to Imperial Assault in the respect that players move their squads around on maps with grids that contain various terrain features. I've seen that Krosmaster tournaments (not sure what level it starts at) have maps that are printed on some sort of thin laminated card stock. The backside of the map is a poster for the game.

It'd be cool to see FFG Organized play add something like this to the tournament kits. Instead of everyone having to drag around their terrain tiles at a tournament and set it up every round, they'd play at the mat already laid out at the table. The mats could have different looking art on them than the stock tile sets provide as well as giving FFG a way to add different features to maps that aren't available in the core set.

This would probably bump up the tournament kit prices but is a nice piece of swag that players are able to take home from the tournament with them.

Yes, The puzzle pieces is the #1 thing hurting tournament play. Something like this is a must. Let's hope FFG steps up and delivers.

For our own Tournements we ordered Prints of the Maps on Truck Canvas, costs were about 4€/Map.

Those look cool. How did it work out for you? Did you find that it sped things up much at the tournament?

Did you scan the individual map pieces and build it in Photoshop or something or did you photograph an already assembled map?

In our local community of Toronto-area players, a kind soul went to the trouble of scanning the tiles and making mats for the 3 Skirmish maps. He was selling them for $15 each, which is a steal for the quality of work he put in to it.

I have a set myself, and the store I frequently play at has a set that is used for drop in games.

I can't stress enough how much easier it is to play when you can roll out this small mat, drop the objective tokens, doors, terminals, all in like 30 seconds, then get to playing.

Now that the new FAQ has 2 new maps going in on the rotation, it's not terribly expensive to get another couple made, especially if the rotation is only a couple of maps every year.

I highly recommend you source out a similar solution in your local area. The map tiles thing had me anxious to get into the organized play side of things for fear of losing components in the commotion of the event, and I don't think I'm alone in that fear.

I don't see FFG doing "official" mats themselves, but then again, their In-Flight at GenCon is tomorrow, and there's always some surprises to be had.

But seriously, don't hold your breath on that one...

Those canvas ones look very nice! And I imagine there would be a bit of extra grip too.

I'd love to see FFG even release a PDF or high res pic of the maps so that people can print their own on whatever medium they prefer.

It definitely is an issue for tournament longevity.

The prints work great, Setup is so much quicker, can't imagine playing without them anymore.

I used Scans i found on the internet and added the Imperial Assault logo and the maps name using GIMP.

This are the jpegs i sent to the Printer (feel free to use them, non-Profit only!):

I printed them on 60x60cm (ecept Imperial Labor Camp, which is 60x70,9cm).

P.S.: A single set of 10 maps cost 50€. But when i ordered 10 sets, i got them for 40€ each.

Handy, and the logo definitely helps, though (like the PDF versions I've seen kicking around, which I suspect use are the same original images) I wonder if they would look better on a black background, instead of white? The tile edges fade to black anyway...

It might look better with a different background, but these maps are for tournament-use and the white background offers supreme contrast and best visibility of the important things on the map.

With a black background it would be more difficult to see the walls, etc... (just my opinion)
