Tournament Results Thread 2015

By stmack, in Star Wars: Armada

Use of color bolding, italics etc, are meant to differentiate important information from detail.

If I am looking at armada tournament data, what is the user ACTUALLY looking for? Why is he looking through a ton of data? What is he looking for on a skim?

Normal size and black should be used for normal data or details of lesser relevance. Heck, you could say currently, what ships can be reduced to normal information. Since they are however big pieces of the data, you could bold them.

A darker green or italics could be used for squadrons. A dark green shows up better without being radiant and pulling too much attention. Because of the current meta, I want to see what squadrons and how many. So on a skim, that would have been relevant information.

Upgrades should probably be normal size, normal style.

Formatting is highly important: The big pieces should be first. Ships first. Squadrons at the end. IF SQUADRONS WERE DARK GREEN AND AT THE END, I COULD SEE IMMEDIATELY WHICH LISTS DIDN'T HAVE SQUADRONS AT ALL!

All the same formatting for each list.

Tabbing for upgrades could be cool, upgrades listed automatically by machine sorting by cost.

Not being center lined means I could read down the list immediately to also know how many of each squadron are there. FAST! Just look to the left for green numbers.

Don't do the black/grey stripes for different lists. Just make it normal text and put a space.

Maybe a little blue and red dot for imperial and rebel. On a skim of large amts of data, this tells me how many different archetypes there are within each faction. Also helps for ease of finding stuff. Making the ships red and blue in text becomes WAYYY too much color information. A dark red might be less intrusive also.

Tons of data: Looking for similarities of lists. This is nice on your site, but formatting. And more raw data. How many taken, %win. Amount of variance between similar lists.

Lets say 30% of Soontir Chiraneaus use stealth and another 40% use hull, and 30% remaining are too different for the computer to understand.

yeah, why are fighters listed first??? Its so confusing, because then the fleets without squads are listed with ships. Its just ehhhgh. And the black grey striping doesn't differentiate enough to make for fast reading.

Ships are in random order, versus say point cost or flagship or something.

Number of fighters is on the right side, and totally not aligned due to centering. Not easy to grasp on a skim.

Red catches eye too much, then i realize all it tells me is that these are Rebel ships OR squadrons. Not useful. And its mixed with blue for ALL upgrades.

Green hard to read.

Also most tourney data is incomplete. I wanna see all 190 gencon lists, have functions that sort them to useful information, etc.

Good point about general ordering within the lists, it's been something I've been meaning to change on the X-wing side too. Right now it's always listed by first appearance, with ships without upgrades appearing first because the default zero upgrade build is always created first when new ships are added, (this is why squadrons generally appear first as well). For X-wing I had tossed around highest pilot skill to lowest, but I like ordered by cost highest to lowest as well and that works for both, will probably try and get that change in this week. That would also force squadrons to the bottom automatically but I do have a flag already set up to distinguish them from regular ships so could definitely change the formatting on them as well.

Good. Use your aggressive feelings, boy. Let the hate flow through you.

So there were at least 3 tournaments this weekend, the Aussie nationals, one in Woking, UK and one in Cary, NC, any others to report or anyone have any further details on those mentioned?

Cheers!

edit: There was also one in Brighton

Second had Double AF mk2 (not sure about upgrades) and some squadrons (B-wings I guess)

There was double VSD+Gladiator + few squadrons in top 4 as well (don't know upgrades)

Can't really say much, because I didn't play against them.

Here I have some more tournament results for you.

I take it that you're a little backed up in updating the data.

Empire Drives Off Rebel Warlord in Colundra Sector

(While I naturally poke at Lyraeus in my HNN posts, this was a nailbiter for him. He came extremely close to winning the tournament, and then was bumped down to third mostly because our other opponents were able to milk so many MoVs from me. I flew really badly this time around.)

(But don't feel too bad for him. He's a filthy rebel, after all.)

1 Dangerous Territory objective token would have clinched it in my favor. . . Naboobo2000 better watch himself!

I really wish I was closer to Portland. It would be interesting.

You would have a ton of competition. The guys here are VERY good.

I haden't played Armada too much so I choose a list that wasn't too complicated and it worked out quite ok. Won the first game 100 - 0 agains a guy who had played even less than me, tied the second against Nigel, the Nordic Champion to be, 5 - 5 and lost the third game (due to a badly chosen shield repair in the last turn) for 6 - 4 i belive.

My inexperience showed very clearly in the two last games where I didn't fly my Gladiator well and didn't get much use of him. And I would use different squads if I'd try something like this again.

First, second and third player all had 23 points.

It was a very friendly and helpful atmosphere, a joy to play!

So, how are we doing in terms of collecting the results?

It seems like stmack is pretty busy, which is why we're not seeing updated data.

Is there a way that we can make this process easier? Is maybe there a particular format that we can post our results in to make the data entry easier? I plan on continuing to collect data and post tournament results on HNN, but this is not a systemic method that will allow for easy analysis later on. It'd be better if I had a go-to format that's compatible with the sort of data that Mini Rranker relies on.

Just sent this report in to stmack. Figured I would post it here too.

Hi guys, just to update, recently released an update to the X-wing site to allow manual data entry for new tournaments and new lists on the site, will be adding that functionality to the Armada side this week and will update you when it's up and running. Cheers (sorry for the long silence!)

edit: update, working now, let me know if you run into any problems.

Good to hear. Look forward to the flood of results that will be entered after the Massing at Sullust.

Superb! I look forward to submitting my results from the Sullust tournament I'll be running tomorrow, and I'll be trying to collect data for the other tournaments I'll be attending.

Update:

Okay, I added three tournaments that I had data on (because: HNN tournament log ). I could go back even further to pre-Wave 1 tournaments, but it's getting late.

I'm going to bed now.
