Should Target Lock be unlimited range?

By eagletsi111, in X-Wing

Well seeing as they say everything you need to play is in the core set selling it separately just doesn't work

Even if they offered it for free, still very likely wouldn't work, because now everything is not in the core set in which you need

As stated before only way would be release a new core set which isn't going to be happening for awhile

I still don't think the idea of increasing the range is a good one

While you could technically bring only 2 TIE Fighters or a beefed up single X Wing to a 100 point tournament, I'd argue that it's not, 'everything you need to play'. The dice pack is also sold separately.

Alot of players already have a huge range ruler. Selling spares for a dollar or two wouldn't be that traumatic of a change IMO. Package it with new cores and sell extras on the side for a dollar or two.

Range rulers, tokens, dice, dmg deck, templates, ships etc etc

You do realize not everyone who plays this game plays competitively?

There are plenty of people who don't own every ship or 12 of each

Some are quite content playing with what they have and making due and/or proxy in what they need otherwise

A lot have huge ships, but not everyone and there are a lot who don't

Ya they could sell it on the side, but you and I know that that's not going to happen.

No matter how you say it everything you do need to play is in that core set

Its the same argument that comes up when someone suggests they should update the damage deck

Unless it comes in a core set its not going to happen.

It's the simple fact that it's states everything you need to play this game is in the core set.

They could give it away for free, it still won't change the simple fact.

Don't see what is so hard to comprehend about this.

Unless they come out with a second edition core set you can scream it till your blue in the face, isn't going to change anything

If they did release a second edition they could alter all kinds of rules and components, and until that happens I wouldn't hold my breath.

The easiest way to fix the "problems" with ordnance is with what they've been doing

Won't happen overnight, but I've been seeing more and more ordnance as of late which tells me they are doing something right.

May not be perfect, but at least they are working on it

And let's just say they did do this.

The problem is you no longer need just the core set to play.

You now need The core set plus X to play.

Let's be realistic here. We both know ffg is not going to release a range ruler on its own.

It would come in an expansion of some sort...wait a sec I believe they have done this

See my Sig:

Our group always plays with the following right now as a house rule:

Bonus for Target Selection:
Torpedoes = Add +1 automatic hit to your attack dice versus large or huge targets only,
Missiles = Add +1 Automatic hit to your attack dice versus small targets
These bonus dice cannot be modified in anyway.
This works well. In fact sometimes when I play on Vassal, I forget and add an extra hit when using ordnance. Then get reminded by the other player and have to explain it.

Not the solution I'd prefer, but definitely benefits from being easy to implement, while still thematically fitting.

I like it.

I think it'd make for an interesting game, trying to keep your TL'ed ships out of arc. And as someone said, it gives a boost to many of the ships and upgrades which are seen as underpowered.

Maybe you could make it a free modification so there's an opportunity cost if you take it (there's lots of competition for that upgrade slot).

If you have a missile or torpedo upgrade equipped, you may gain a target lock at any range, provided your target is inside your ship's firing arc.

Or how about if it came with special tokens?

If you have a missile or torpedo upgrade equipped, you may gain a target lock at any range, provided your target is inside your ship's firing arc. Use an ordnance target lock token instead of the normal target lock token. Ordnance target locks can only be spent when attacking with missile or torpedoes.

vs

Every ship comes with 3 id icons. Just say place an ID icon on top of a target lock to signify it's an ordnance target lock. This way there are no new tokens needed. Also I would state Primary firing arc, even though it doesn't really make sense with the technology available, it keeps game balance.
