Big announcement? Let's speculate.

By enentol, in Dark Heresy General Discussion

I don't mind Askellon right now, and Enemies Within did a lot to build on what was there. In fact, I'm setting a whole campaign in Port Aquila based on what was provided in the core rulebook and Enemies Within.

I think that people forget that Calixis' lore was built by numerous supplements and source books. At first, it was also just as simple.

The difference in this case is that we're a year in with only really two books to suport the line. A little frustrating.

Still, I have faith.

From a fluff-writing standpoint, it's probably a preference thing on whether writers would be more interested in doing 40K or Star Wars, although the latter is much more popular and will probably be more familiar to high-quality writers.

From a game-designer standpoint, I'd imagine it's MUCH more interesting and enjoyable to write for FFG Star Wars than 40K. There's a lot more room for rules innovation and the far wider and more diverse fan base seems a lot more open to trying new things. Star Wars is a system that is specifically designed to promote gameplay choices and narrative rather than 40K, a system designed to be a simple way to generate random outcomes.

My guess is that it's probably just plain more enjoyable to write for the star was line than the 40K line. Who knows, maybe the d100 system was handed down as an edict that 40K has to use. Regardless, my bet for the lack of focus on 40K in contrast to Star Wars (despite the 40K system being a consistently strong seller) is that people like working on Star Wars better. There's probably an issue too of the whole beta for DH2 turning up a lot of strong negative opinions about the system that wore down the desire to work on it.

That said, I think that the app for Dark Heresy looks amazing and I'd love for that kind of work to show up for other game lines. Being able to automate all of the fiddly bits of gameplay would be a boon to any system, and would make a good substitute for a lot of the fiddly bits that showed up in games like WFRP.

Well, it IS Enemies Without, but it's still not being released until Q4 - so somewhere between October and December.

So at least 6 months between Enemies Within and Enemies Without... It's going to be a loooooooong wait.

Well, I'm glad they didn't just quit without saying anything.

Sweet! Very excited about that new Ace role (and more vehicles in general).

And it'll be out just in time for my next DH rotation. Awesome.

I'm hoping that there are some awesome new homeworlds and backgrounds too. Imperial Navy would be quite fitting with all the new vehicular stuff that they're teasing.

Someone pinch me, Enemies Without - splatbook for Ordo Xenos

Kinda sad that it wasn't announced at gencon, might have helped publicity/better sales?

True...

Yet at least they have not cancelled the DH2.0 line.

Uhh! Finally! I have no idea why this took so long to announce. At least I can finally update my sig...

Ah so you contribute to this one 2 H.M.B.C :-)

Yup, been a while on the WH40k rpg front...what with sw announcements overshadowing everything else.

Still good to see support for the line.

Good point! It hadn't even occurred to me after I read the announcement until you said that, but I remember thinking when the core book came out that there was kind of a glaring blank spot for Imperial Navy (or some other background which followed from the Voidborn homeworld in that you'd essentially been in space all your life). I'd be willing to bet that's going to be one of the new backgrounds.

And, hey... I wonder if any of those nifty piloting-related talents from the beta are going to find their way back in.

Here's hoping they don't go overboard with Roles in the long run.

I doubt it, I don't think Dark Heresy 2nd Edition is going to have more supplements than Only War or Black Crusade.

This isn't Star Wars you know. ;)

Maybe we should create a spinoff, a crossover, where 40k meets Star Wars, in a galaxy far far away. Combine the systems and then crusade through the Star Wars universe...

The Admech won't like the droids of the Star Wars universe either.

Did they copied the Ace Role from StarWars RPG?

If only they pulled more good ideas from those games.

I love the setting. That's why I play it.

The rules are pretty bad though.

Why don't you just play a FATE conversion or Savage Worlds?

Or (glob help me) GURPS?

I play many other games, but I haven't found a good ruleset to run DH in. Looking forward to Mutant Chronicles 3e when that finally comes out.

Edit: Sorry to harp on the system, but I noticed in the thread on the 40K app that the programmer was unsure about being able to make a program that could verify character creation due to all the rules exceptions. This system has so much stuff bolted onto it that a computer would have trouble keeping track of it, or at least would be too much work to program. That should be a red flag about how complicated this system is, and that's with only a core book and a source book out.

He also posted about having trouble making sure XP didn't go negative, and lord only knows how that happens.

Actually I can guess - buy a skill on cheap, then change your character options to make that skill expensive, then refund the skill. If you don't recalculate every cost when aptitudes change you can end up adding and removing the same thing at different costs.
