Out of the boarder

Hey guys

I understand that if your base template is outside the mat it means that your ship is destroyed instantly. However I was under the impression that if your template moves outside the mat this same effect takes play, it means that your ship is destroyed, however on the weekend I was told otherwise.

The opponent I played used a 2 hard to move his soontir fel back into the map however his template was off the mat.

I challenged him but him and another guy who is well versed in the rules said that its only if the base ends up off the mat. please enlighten me I have only been playing fore a few months.

Your opponent was correct - as long as no part of the base leaves the play area, it's ok if the movement template does.

MOVEMENT

Q: After a ship executes a maneuver, if its maneuver template is outside the play area but the ship’s base is not outside the play area, has that ship fled the battlefield?

A: No

Ships do NOT "move" along their template. They start at one end and somehow end up at the other end. Now if that other end is blocked then the template is used to determine where they actually did end up but even then they do not "move" along the template.

How does flying through a debris field or asteroid any different then? if you fly though those you not only get either no action/stress you also have to roll for damage. isn't it the same thing?

I guess It's not the same thing basically because the rules say they are. I don't think there's any logic besides giving player's an opportunity to recover when positioned at the edge of the board.

The obstacle rules are careful to say they trigger from the template as well as the base.

Because those things specifically mention having an effect if the maneuver template happens to touch them.

We might also say that when a template goes over an obstacle something happens but there is nothing on the edge to go over. If you want to ask how the edge is different from an obstacle you should throw another ship into the mix as well. When flying you have three things to worry about (ships, obstacles, and area edge) and they share some similarities they also have differences.

I have a friendly rule solution that you can try IF (and only if) ALL players agree. Also, before I cover it, understand that you can't use it in a tournament.

If the mat is elevated or the entire tabletop is the play area then a ship is in-bounds IF the ship doesn't tip or fall off of the play area when your fingers are removed AND there is nothing that might balance the ship to keep it on (eg putting tokens on the base). Then, it's very objective, either the model stays on the board or it doesn't. It's a lot of fun when your opponent (or you for that matter) pull your fingers away and the ship tilts off the table/mat hahaha. There's more Os than in a Cheerio factory buwahahaha.

THIS isn't a sanctioned rule in any way!!! If you get used to it, it might bite you later.
