Could we use a new starter?

By DarkSpade, in X-Wing

Would anyone else like to see a new starter set? I'd love to have a new physical rule book with all the errata along with all the rules that currently only exist as cards. Yeah I know there's a digital version, but I don't always play the game near a computer.

It would make for a great tie in with the upcoming movie. Could still include the x wing and tie fighters. Just change the paint to something out of the new movie and give us some new pilots.

Mobile phones and tablets are cheap and freely available i don't see faq's being online as an issue.

Not likely. At best, they merely update the rulebook in a new printing of the core set. They have yet to make a second core set for a game that wasn't a new edition.

I'm fine with it as is.

This.

It's a bit early for a second edition, though I for one would love to see that happen (with the proper conversion kits).

The game could do with a modular damage deck and more speed 4 and 5 maneuvers to give those Interceptors and A-Wings some legs.

No

They include erratas in reprints... good nuff.

It's too early for a second edition, but a revamp of the core set might be in order.

Currently, someone who wants to play Scum would be getting 2 core sets (because duh), and having 6 ships they don't use as their buy-in to the game. That's the extreme form of the problem, but Rebels and Imperials have a slightly smaller version of it.

I would love to see 1 core set per faction, something like: 1 X-Wing + 1 Y-Wing for Rebels, 1 Tie and 1 Tie Advanced for Imperials. 1 Syck and 1 Khazicstan for the Scum. Only the ships would be different for each starter set.

In each set I'd put a full set of templates, dice and damage deck. I'd also put 1 of each of the extra rule cards (ie: cloaking, titles, etc). I'd also create a set of those cards for action bar actions listed in the core rules and huge ship rules, so that new players would have a handy guide for barrel rolling and target locking. Not to mention Reinforce and Coordinate.

The really important part of creating a new set of SKUs like this is to not alienate existing players by including brand new pilots, EPTs, etc. You would be doing this only to make it easier for new players to jump in.

(Potentially controversial: I'd include the X1 title + ATC for the Tie Advanced in the Imperial core set. The Tie Advanced needs this title like no one's business!)

And that's how I would go about it. People are probably going to want all 3 factions anyway, but no one will mind getting 3 sets of the non-ship stuff in the faction core sets. Meanwhile, a new player could start out as _just_ Scum/Imp/Reb, and still feel like they're not wasting anything.

I'd also like to see a revamp of the SKUs for the X-Wing, Y-Wing and (to a lesser extent), the Tie Advanced. Right now, the pilots and options for those ships are kinda scattered all over the place! There are 3 different SKUs for the X-Wing pilots. Whenever FFG puts out an X-Wing fix, that number will go _up_. The Y-Wing title is _awesome_, but comes in a starter deck for a whole other faction. I rather like getting 4 X1 titles free with a Raider, but a new player wouldn't know about it until they're told.

Yes, all of my ideas would need to be refined and carefully implemented. I'm positive that there's something in there that needs a bit of work. But I think I've got the right general idea.

Granted: none of it may actually be cost effective for FFG. :)

Maybe even keep the starter as it is but add a new one, with ships from the three factions. I would buy it.

In other games, they have kept factions out of the Core set. As it is now, a Scum only player probably can skip the second Core, and go for the dice pack instead. Though, a Scum player will still have to buy a decent amount of Rebel/Imperial stuff for Most Wanted.

And you seem to miss the point of the core set, a philosophy that has been pretty consistant among FFG's Core Sets. The Core Set isn't for you to go straight to a tournament. It is there to give you a taste of a game for 2 players.

I'm OK with updating the printed rule book with all the errata, but nothing more.

I'd be okay with a new starter set if they didn't change any rules, and everything from the first starter set and all releases is still legal, barring specific errata. I'd entertain a new damage deck (because I think we need it), and new content in a starter set, but only as long as previous content (other than the previous damage deck) is legal.

Simply put, yes.

The biggest reason is not everyone is a nutter that hangs on every bit of SWtMG news.

Case in point, my brother. He got a phantom a few weeks ago and was all stoked to play it. As we were getting ready to play, I told him if he read the new rules about Decloaking and he was astonished to hear that FAQ's for the game even exist. I said he might want to re-think playing that ship since it's not going to work the way he thought it would, which then started an argument and a trip to the internet to settle the matter.

It felt pretty crappy to have to do that, and my brother was genuinely pissed that FFG decided to totally change the mechanic of the ship completely without him ever knowing about it.

The new starter set should include a proprietary tablet (like the Kindle) that can update its rules via 3G cellular. That's the only way to keep a living rulebook going these days, since there will always be folks who are too busy to keep abreast of all the changes in the game.

It is very telling that many are unaware the word 'errata' is actually the plural form of the word 'erratum'. Today it is unthinkable that only one error is made by designers, so one erratum is never enough. No, these corrections come in bulk quantities, leading to such awful terms as 'erratas'.

Heh. Like 'media' is the plural of 'medium,' which was lost on those that coined the term 'multimedia.'

*sigh*

To be totally honest, that second set of templates is really useful. It's one of the reasons I recommend a second core set so highly.

I had, actually, missed the point of the core set. :)

What I want the core set to be, and what FFG want it to be seem to be at odds. I do love the idea of someone spending $40, getting a 2 player game out of it, and then deciding from there if they want more. I'm not actually sure how often that happens anymore, given that the game is so widespread.

I think the tension between the core set as a "game in itself", and the core set as "the starter pack for your collection" is at the heart of most of these conversations around a new core set.

The funny bit is that most of us who are on these forums are do deep into the game that a new core set would be mostly theoretical anyway. Having to buy a new one would piss most of us off.

That's what happens when "3rd declension Latin" runs into "whomever uses English declensions anymore will use 'whom' incorrectly" English, and gets translated by programmers.

Erratas is the correct word, in English. And I will go hither and thither proving it.

I bought each of the new SWG retail boxes as they transitioned to NGE because they came with new vehicles and items. I'm not proud of it. And if the ships are painted differently in a re-release here, I'd make the same mistake all over again.

I would say that, theoretically, a new Core Set featuring some Episode 7 stuff and an update to our poor old X-wing is not entirely out of the question.

But as I said above, my opinion is that it would only be okay if it doesn't replace anything in the original Core Set, and that it only adds new things that do not replace anything previous. The only replacement I'd be willing to entertain is an updated damage deck, including new cards that reflect the new state of the game, but I also think it should be sold separately if it comes to be.

I wouldn't object to a new core set that featured different things than the original, but I don't know if I'd be okay with them releasing new content that way. It would depend heavily on how much new content compared to old, what ships, and so on. A box full of new things would be great, a box full of Expose and Winged Gundarks plus three things I really want would be a lot less okay.

I would also like the errata'd cards reprinted and an easy way to acquire just those.

My data plan would like to have a word with you.

A three faction pack would be good. It wouldn't need to be a new starter pack but it could be a great way to give love to some ships that need help. Make it like the most wanted pack to some degree in that it has lots of upgrades compared to the number of ships. Add in new pilot cards and upgrades for several of the ships that need a bump such as tie defender, the shuttle, Ewing, maybe the Xwing, Syck, and star viper. The models included would probably be the tie defender, Ewing, and Syck. These ships could all use a bump and a pack like this would be a good way to breathe lots of new life into underused ships.

I digress, having just a smart phone with unlimited data is around $100 a month (and you will want unlimited data with all the app updates and forced advertised streams on websites). Having a pad just adds that much to the phone. Calling them cheaper than books? Well, only if you compare to overpriced GW codexes but even then I think the PAD+phone+ monthly billing cost more than buying a new book every month.

Also that is exactly what GW is doing, all of their codexes are going straight to IOS (and being apple exclusives for some corporate awful reason). You might call this new Age of Sigmar exactly that, and that is another reason why I dropped out of 40K. I actually bought all the codexes until they started to place IPAD only codexes that I could not afford.

This game is in desperate need of a revised release, where all current erratas are included. Let's not kid ourselves...

I expect those that participate on this forum daily will disagree because everyone can simply 'refer to their smartphone', but for the casual players trying to remember all the rules from maybe the core rules or perhaps a rule card or wait... The FAQ. Wait! I meant one of the multiple rulebooks that come with different ships... Or was it a pilot skill? No wait! Modification card! Or was it... See, what I'm saying?! Xwing is getting seriously bloated! I mean Twilight Imperium kinda bloated, where there can be times where rule verifying can take longer than the game play.

And for those that would feel gouged by FFG for offering a new core set to new players as part of trying to lower the bar to entry for them... I seriously disagree with any assertion that being offered a new, say, $40 or $50 2nd core is a cash grab when we all know that not only is the average player going to buy it regardless, but it is a drop in the bucket compared to the $1000's they will spend on this game. That is if I, as well as the average forum user is any indication. According to the typical forum signature that is... And I still hold these thoughts, even after following these forums daily for over a year.

We need to get over our communal gaming elitism and admit that bloat is bloat and 3 years of rules evolution adds not only a barrier to entry but a handicap to anyone who doesn't play regularly.

<end rant>
