Questions about bonus material and new edition...

By rangerdrakeson, in Tannhauser

Howdy all!

I'm a huge board game fan, and naturally, picked up Tannhauser. And naturally, havn't played it yet. I've got the base game, the expansion (Tannhäuser: Operation Novgorod) , and the three availible figures (Yula, Ramirez, and Gorgeï. No Wolf, ... Yet). I know, I know, I need to play the game. I will. But I'm curious, to those who have played extensively, what are the expected differences between the existing version, and the new version? In other words, I don't want to learn a new game, to have to un-learn in when the Revised Edition comes out. Also, the surplus of material here on the FFG site, the bonus tokens, the winter packs, and the updated scenarios. Are they worth printing out, or is it all going to change on me?

The announcement that FFG had obtained the IP for Tannhauser has energized me for the game! Like I said, I just want to print out stuff that'll stick around, and not get thrown away when the new edition comes out.

Thanks for the help!

Take care,

Ranger Drakeson

You're not the only one wondering whats going on. I've been watching the site closely to see where this is headed. I've even been holding off playing much till I see the changes.

Scott

I knew I couldn't be the only one.

BTW, if there's anyone in Austin, Texas looking for some Board Game goodness, there's a rather large group that meets all over town for all kinds of games. Drop me a line, and I'll point you in the right direction!

Take care,

Ranger Drakeson

well a lot of bonus stuff changes how you play anyway, so go ahead and print it out....and play the game, im sure the version you and the rest of us have isnt going to change much, maybe a few differences here and there, but i doubt it will be a major mechanic change

That would be disappointing actually. I really, really wanted to like Tannhauser. But the game is dull and predictable. Skills are pretty meaningless and we were hoping for something more engaging. What we found in too many cases was that you pretty much died in one bad defense roll. It was a little too quick.

And some of the equipment is way too overpowered compared to others.

For me, the game would be dull if it didn't have a high mortality rate.

Like you, when my group first started playing we we had preconceived expectations regarding the game, and the high mortality rate seemed odd.

Many games later, with the knowledge that every character could be taken out any time, the gameplay is less reckless and less predictable.

Also, I've found that players that decry weapons being overpowered are, inevitably, the ones on the receiving end...

Rant on - It really drives me nuts someone says they "really wanted to like" something. What does that mean? It's a passive aggresive excuse for your own expectations, really. It's like saying "I really wanted to like Shakespeare (but I couldn't actually make an effort to make it through the prose). - Rant off

I agree LW, it boils my blood.

you either like it or you don't. Players revolve around the game, not games revolve around players. Thus there are a large variety of gmaes for all sorts of tastes.

Tannhauser hits the spot for me. Great background and story. Love the path finding, and the quick play of it is the REASON I continue to play it.

90% of the games I own take about 3 hours to play. Tannhauser is about 45 - 1 hour. Nice to have a quick play game Wings of War is another fast paced fun game.

I hope gears of war will be too when/if FFG comes out with it.

agreed to both of you, dull? must have been playing with lights off, lol.

even zorka who looks overpowered can be taken out with the right tactics, also re-inforcements?

you can have the same game 10 times with different play, its only your own tactics that limit it

I don't anticipate any major rules changes at all. FFG already said that everything made so far is fully compatible. The bonus tokens are a must (though many have been printed in Novgorod and Daedalus) so get those.

In a email FFG said that they will continue to use the path finding system as well as the basic format of the game.

I guess the changes to the rules are to make it easy for new players and maybe make the game a tad bit different?

In my 1st game I only read through the rules once and only had to really look up weapons but didnt really have any problems with the rules although I dont know anything about the previous edition.

While I said that I don't expect many rules changes, I sincerely hope that there is a massive rules re-organization. The rules really were horribly organized. There is constant flipping back and forth in the book and some rules were no where to be found in the book.

With any luck, FFG will redo the rules in a way that makes it possible to learn the game and later to be able to find a particular rule.

well, i hope, they will reprint the tokens of yula and wolf so that the symbols are on the correct side of the tokens. especially the crate tokens. wrong side and also different symbols! makes it easy to identify, which kind of token it is!

I'm hoping for a bit more depth to the game as well. It's still a fun game, even if you just play deathmatch...The instant kills are what makes it fun.

However, I have to defend the statement of 'I really wanted to like it'. I can understand it completely. To compare it to someone not taking the time to read the prose of Shakespeare puts the honus back on the gamer. What if you've read the prose and it still doesn't trip your trigger? Why should that cause your blood to boil? Haven't you ever seen a movie that appeals to you storywise, has your favorite actor, but still doesn't quite meet the bill?

I won't speak for the poster, but to me, Tannhauser is a wonderful setting. I love the pathfinder system, I love the characters, the quick play and instant kills...but it still is missing that extra 'whatever' that would make it my favorite game. I'm was hoping a few rule tweaks or ''skill" utilizations will help push it into that territory.

I like the instant kills. In other miniatures/skirmish games we play the damage is little drawn out (mind you, we are partial to using hit locations, so it's our own fault). We do love the Domination Mode, it is little bit more strategic than Deathmatch Mode.

My statement against the "wanted to like it" trope was a bit harsh, yes.

I associate the "wanted to like it" excuse with something like inarticulate movie reviews you would find on something like Ain't It Cool. It relieves the reviewer of any investment beyond an initial desire, if you follow.

I agree, Tannhauser can be "bumped" up to a better game, and there is room to critique it.

Yeah, I follow you. The 'wanted to like' is becoming a bit cliche, and it really can be used as an easy out.
