Using focus tokens more than once per round

By Asmodi, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Playing a tournament last week and a couple of games through the week with the same opponent this came up.

The pilot he had or one of the upgrade cards allowed him to assign an extra focus token so he had 2 on that ship most of the time.

Here is what happened.

I rolled attack dice, plus resolved rerolls etc. He rolled 2 focus and used a Focus token to get evades.

I then attacked is ship with another of my ships and rolled 3 hits after re-rolls were resolved etc. He rolled another focus result and then used his remaining focus to change that to an evade.

I questioned this as I was under the impression you could not use a focus or evade more than once per attack on the same ship.

He assured me it was allowed now and as I hadn't played for a few months I accepted this.

Reading the new faq however it seems I was correct.

Can anyone confirm.

Here is my understanding on double focus.

You could use one per attack phase and one per defence phase.

However it seems that you can only use 1 x Focus and 1 x Evade per turn. You can never use 2 x Focus or 2 x Evade in the same turn ever.

Q: Can a ship have more than one focus, evade, or stress token assigned to it?

A: Yes. A ship cannot perform focus or evade actions more than once during
a round, but a game effect (such as Garven Dreis’ pilot ability) may assign
additional tokens to a ship.

Your opponent was right.

You can use as many token as you wish if you have them.

However, you can take just one focus/evade ACTION per turn

There's no limit on the amount of evade tokens you can use during the Combat phase or during the same attack. You can also spend as many focus tokens as you like during an attack, although only one is required to modify your results.

Spending tokens is not the same as performing actions to get tokens.

Spending tokens is not the same as performing actions to get tokens.

This is the key here. Pilots like Darth Vader and those heroes who use Push The Limit can perform 2 actions (although cannot perform the same action twice). That is, they can't give themselves 2 focus tokens or boost twice. However, if they receive additional focus or evade tokens a pilot can use them. This is not 'performing' an action. Now, you are spending tokens.

I understand the wording can be tricksy.

I hope we've got the difference between Performing an Action being limited to once per round and being able to spend those tokens basically having no limit. I guess I'll just add one more thing here:

You can freely SPEND tokens when a ship has Stress on it. With one specific exception you can NOT Perform ANY Actions while you have a Stress token on a ship; this often limits a ship's ability to get tokens but doesn't affect how they can use tokens they already have or are given by other sources.
