New player list advice

By John Rainbow, in X-Wing Squad Lists

What do you guys think of this? I've been having some success with it but want some suggestions.

A-Wing (Prototype Pilot) + Chardaan

A-Wing (Prototype Pilot) + Chardaan

B-Wing (Blue) + FCS

B-Wing (Blue)

Y-Wing (Gold) + R2 Mech. & Ion Turrent

It has low pilot skill but so far seems to have something for everything that I've played against (not gone up against phantoms yet though).

Have you tried the stress droid and title for the Y-wing? The title gives the double tap each turn and the droid gives a stress token to you and your target. You can stress one ship twice or two ships once. Downside is you lose the turret's ability to shoot out of arc and you collect a pile of stress yourself.

I haven't flown the A's much but talk on the forums indicates they are good blockers. I really like the Bs. If you can tweak your list get FCS on both. Turns them into hurt machines.

One problem with low PS pilots is Predator. Gives you opponent a two dice re-roll. That can prove to be deadly.

I'm a relative newcomer to the game so not that familiar with the As as I said. A search of the forum should give some insight on A builds and what flies well with them.

Personally, I'd drop an A to boost everyones PS and add FCS to the other B. Dropping one A should give you 15 points to play with. Something to think about.

I don't have the cards to play that y-wing build yet...

I agree that FCS is worthwhile. I'd even say its better to drop one a-wing (and I really like a-wings) for a bandit so you have the points for it. That puts you at 99, so in the future, if you get R3-A2 and the BTL-A4 title, you can easily fit it in.

I also don't have any Z's yet...

Maybe switch the A's for Biggs and the FCS and something?

or just by a z-95 :P

Buying your first Z is a slippery slope. No point just having one....

I quite like the list you post from a beginner point of view.

You have 2 blockers, a control and two brawlers. Let's you play with a variety of strategies to see what you enjoy flying. Then plan the expansions you buy based on that.

Shame you can't squeeze on the second FCS without changing something else.

If playing socially rather than competitively, maybe people will let you proxy cards. That way only have to worry about what ships you have rather than upgrades. I'd guess most people would be ok with that, worth asking.

Thanks for the info guys. I could change to...

Biggs + R2D2

2x Blue B Wing + FCS

Gold Y-Wing + Ion Turrent

Bear in mind R2D2 is unlikely to keep Biggs alive. I think most would consider it wasted points on him.

His ability forces him to be the primary target and he "will" take focus fire. The trick is to use his ability to force the enemy to split their fire so some are forced to shoot Biggs preferably at range three through an asteroid, but some aren't able to and therefor his ability doesn't kick in. The isn't much point trying to tank incoming damage with Biggs. At first glance it seems that's his job but it isn't. He is there to disrupt the opponents plans and keep your other ships from being focus fired.

Some ships benefit from R2D2 a lot as they can either mitigate incoming damage (Luke) or can dance and run to recover shields (Corran Horn). In Biggs case he might never get the chance to use the droid due to his ability and the X-wings lack of good green manouvers.

Maybe others will have a better suggestion but I'd maybe take Hull or Shield on him instead. Maybe Hull for 3pts and a basic R2 with the final point to open his dial up so he can better recover from Making a K-turn or otherwise being given a stress by someone.
