Star Wars: Armada can be played on Vassal

By MattShadowlord, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi

I know some of the people on this forum are already aware of this, but for those who aren't please note that Star Wars: Armada can now be played on your PC using a program called Vassal.

A lot of us who came to Armada from Xwing will already be aware of the program; it is essentially a tabletop simulator on which you can play games as long as you already know the rules and have access to the cards.

Negatives: It is not as sociable and no where near as good looking as playing with actual models on a space map.

Positives: It is always available, you can play games vs people from way outside your own local 'meta' and you can watch games between some of the best players out there. I just saw a game between DrunkenTarkin and Eric Riha while simultaneously battling an imperial player 10,000miles away.

And while its only V1.0 and lacks the massive amount of polish that has made Xwing Vassal a remarkable simulation of the table top game, it's genuinely not a bad implementation at all. Try ships before you buy!

How does one find players? I'd be interested to look into this if I knew more about it. Is it a real time game play or a turn by turn over several days/weeks type of thing?

It's real time

Btw I want a rematch sometime shadowlord:P

Also as Matt demonstrated all ready it is excellent for screen shots when making tactics articles, videos or for recreating a battle for a battle report since you can just log on by yourself as well

Currently the unreleased version 2.0 has a "smarter" articulated template, additional range bands on objectives and obstacles, and several other features that were previously absent or overlooked.

A few graphics are being updated, and I'm waiting on some wave 2 spoilers or a full release before releasing version 2.0 of the module.

PM me with specific questions, requests, or suggestions about the module.

I am getting my Internet next week so I could get some games in

I'm always down to play. Want to test these "super fleets" people keep rambling about.

Super fleet? I have not heard of this

First time using Vassal and such. I installed and downloaded the armada file, but now I'm totally lost on how to work this thing. Is there any kind of tutorial or video showing me what to do?

I'm with this guy. I recall trying to use it for X Wing a year ago, and I had no idea then.

I love the idea, but Vassal is quite clunky to use. I remember a few X-Wing games with it and it was confusing working with Vassal.

I think we are used to programs that have "Rules" and prevent you from doing things you shouldn't instead of just being a tool to play a tabletop game on your computer.

It's not the rules, no. It's the actual interface.

A "how-to" file will be part of the general version 2.0 release.

i think this will help alot, for me, especially since i can practice some set ups and manuvers on it.

YouTube vassal tutorial or startup guide for x-wing there are some really good videos to help you get started with the basics, as for some of the differences between armada and x-wing 10ish minutes of fiddiling around in single player should be enough to figure how to use the tool and such.

The big thing to remember is RIGHT-CLICK ON EVERYTHING the drop down menus make it easy to do whatever you want with the pieces until you can get use to hotkeys

The one thing I found a little questionable, was how the maneuver tool is "illegally" used: in that it is slotted in then you set it as the standard method. I think you can pull the widgets out, but that's rather cumbersome to say the least.
