Building a gaming table for Armada

By Lyraeus, in Star Wars: Armada

Alright so I am working on a gaming table. I am not some guru on this and I was just thinking of getting some 3 2'x4' MDF boards and using that on top of a folding table (I don't have all the room in the world to game since I just rent a room but it's my space)

Now I know a few people here have made such tables. I was hoping to get some advice on materials, painting the blasted things, price and how to make it look pretty.

Other advice is ALWAYS welcome!

I will go metric. A 600x1200x12mm Marine ply would be my recommendation I used a MDF board and it has warped. So the board in the photo is not long for this world.

I glued a black felt to a 600x900x3mm MDF board and glued that to the centre of each of the other boards. Thus providing a clear edge of the board should ships drive off the edge.

If you plan to just put down a vinyl mat, then you could just paint the 12mm ply board and be finished. You could also glue down some felt or something to protect the table underneath. If you think about how to go about it carefully, you can also use a tape cloth to create a hinge and fold the table up after you are done.

If you play other games a green/blue felt on one side and black on the other can be quite nice too.

Also not that if you buy two pieces of timber there is cut size and dressed, usually a cut piece will be bigger than you want and will then be cut to size. So if you buy it at a hardware store make sure the pieces match.

I don't have an airbrush. . . Hmmmm I plan on setting this onto a Walmart folding table.

The idea is so I can make videos and test ideas at home

That is using canned paints.

I am in the process of doing it again, I could post a video how to if I can get a camera man.

Lol. I use a mount for my phone.

I read how you did it. Correct me if I am wrong but you put the nozzle right up to the cutout or did you spray from a distance?

I spray from about 30cm, and you target the cut out you make so that the paint hitting the table is just overspray.

This is mine from a previous post. Image is small. sorry. I used 1/4" MDF for the top and 3/4 for the bottom. Blue and Red felt for the factions and black/w glitter felt for a space like setting for the play surface. Came out Great!

If I remember correctly, Walmart folding table are only 30 inches wide, not enough

What is that? A gaming table for ants?

All joking aside, I have a 6x4 cork-board with wooden backing that I use for my gaming table. When we play, we just flip it cork side down so it's on top of my dining table or my work desk, which is large. That way, it doesn't scratch anything, and you have more than enough room to get the 3' x 3' mats on top of it, and have 6" of space on either side for all your cards, knick knacks, and so on that you need to play.

This has been the perfect solution for me so far.

I was planning to build one this weekend. Was thinking 3 peices to make transportation easier. Local home improvement stores only have MDF in three quarter inch thick pieces. Was thinking about felt for the top, but I'd like to be able to have it pre marked for a quicker setups. Thinking maybe I'll cut and glue the felt and use multiple colors to distinguish the setup zones.

This was incredibly easy for me to recreate. It's how to spray paint awesome looking planets. I know it's not about "building" but it will help the board look great.
