Twin VSD & fighters in prep for twin ISD & fighters

By Indomitable, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

I've been considering playing a twin VSD list and got to thinking if at 400 you could run a twin ISD with each having a full wing of fighters. It looks like you can(will... Maybe):

Squadrons (12) 133

TIE Adv x2

TIE Fighter x3

Howlrunner

TIE Int x4

TIE Bomber x1

Major Rhymer

Tarkin 38 (just for worst case points)

This leaves 239 points or 120 per ISD, which if the spoiler about the ISD1 being in the 90s for points is possible. Now whether a list like that is any good... Who knows, I do know I'll try it out because lore awesomeness.

Anyway, to get used to playing a pair of ships and fighters I was thinking of the list below:

Imperial, 300

Obj: Adv. Gunnery, hyperspace assault, minefields

Com: Screed

VSD1 w/ Screed, flight controllers, expanded hangers - 110

VSD2 w/ warlord, gunnery team, h9 Turbolasers - 108

Squadrons: (7) 82

Major Rhymer

TIE Bomber

TIE Advanced x2

TIE Interceptor x3

I'm debating switching out an advanced, and two interceptors (34) for Adm Chiraneu, Mauler Mithel, and a regular TIE (33). Or pulling either an advanced or a interceptor for an intel officer on warlord and perhaps another small upgrade.

A couple of general points about my play style / philosophy: I almost always deploy in the center to force a head on engagement or cut the board in half if the other side refuses a flank. I would deploy the carrier first, followed by fighters, and the VSD2 close on either side of my carrier based on enemy deployment (closer to the enemy if I'm confident they can't flank, or further away at max speed and navs to stop a flanking attempt). I will nav early and often if necessary... Though the carrier won't be able to do this as much (precious precious squadron commands).

Thoughts, on the current list or speculative ISD plan are both welcome

skreed doesn't seem terribly great without the greater returns on black dice (unless you expect the least maneuverable ship in the game to frequently get close range shots :P)

seems like you might as well get motti. The 2 hull is surprisingly useful, at the very least buying you another round of shots either with the vSD or against it

I've used a very similar list, basically just motti and VSD-2 Dominator (no other upgrades) instead of the Warlord (which I really want to test), and it seems to work well enough. The squadrons are basically essential to the success of these slow ships, so having a carrier VSD around (which also happens to hold space better than "beware of dog" signs) alongside a combat VSD really makes it tick.

just remember that the combat VSD still packs squadron 3, and you'll sometimes get far more returns out of that than most other commands apart from navigate. The Warlord in particular is very flexible, so she shouldn't be too loath to dedicate a few commands to throwing Rhymer around. This, and the guaranteed squadron damage, are what make me excited to try it. Dominator has been great, and it too makes great use of the occasional early game command, but after round 2 its ability starts kicking in and I get nothing but repair commands :P

Motti would allow me to pull an advanced and add Chiraneu and replace a squint with Mithel... I do kind of like having the extra advanced... But with guaranteed damage from mauler and warlord and movement flexibility... Not sure.

One reason I lean towards Screed vs Motti is he mitigates horrible rolls sometimes, particularly with warlord h9. But extra hull on big expensive targets that will take fire is also good.

Very excited for Wave 2 aswell Indomitable, and have been trying out 2 x VSDII at 400 points.( bit of a challenge to outfit them for 265, I had to buy a few extra expansions to get enough upgrades, however, it opened up more options for my fleets.. :) ) anyhoo, here's what I've been trying at 300 points. Similar to Fickles' suggestions above. :)

VicII w/ Motti, flight con, exp h, Warlord 128

VicI w/ Int off, ACM, X17 93

Rymer

2 x Adv

2 x Int

Howly

78

299 total

same objectives as OP's

Good Luck with your versions guys!

you don't need luck; this aint X-wing :P

should be more like "happy hunting" ;)
