Whisper and Bomber with escort

By Jedu, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Due to small number of ships, I figured out one squad, which I guess is more fun then competitive.

Buzzsaw Whisper - (32+12)

- VI (1), ACD (4), FCS (2), Gunner (5)

TIE Bomber - Scimitar (16+8/9)

- Assault Missiles (5) OR Concussion Missiles (4), Ion Puls Missiles (3), Munitions (1)

TIE F - Winged Gundark (15)

TIE F - Black Squadron (14 + 2)

- Squad Leader (2)

Total 100 or 99, depending on the choice of assaults or concussions, for initiative bid for Whisper.

The idea of bomber is to make it the more deadly in first round of shooting. It flies together with Gundark and Black Squad Leader. Thanks to squad leader, bomber may TL and focus the same round, to make sure that sth will hit and to maximize damage output.

Usually I set up the 3 TIE formation far from Whisper. The enemy has 2 priority targets - heavy loaded bomber and Whisper. If he/she decides to chase Whisper, I fly her defensively just to drag them into bomber's range. If he/she decides to face bomber first, Whisper can flank them. If the enemy will try to shoot down bomber first, Gundark can easily get into R1 and do some dmg. Black squad is kept behind the bomber, to support it with double actions as long as it's needed.

I played it twice against similar squadrons

-Fat Han and jake (unfinished, but I took of Jake first and left with whole squad and still fully loaded bomber)

-Chirpy and Buzzsaw Whisper - victory, I've lost Whisper, but it was a very close game and I had init.

So, what do you think of it? Do you see any spots that could be improved? I'm thinking of getting rid of munitions to get init bid, because bomber with double actions should always get a hit (but I will regret it when I roll 4 blanks...).

You could change Gundark to Mauler Mithel for a more powerful Range 1 effect. 4 attack dice versus 3.

This would require moving the Squad Leader to Mauler and downgrading to an Obsidian or Academy Pilot.

Another fun option might be to downgrade Gundark to an Obsidian or Acdemy and put a Stealth Device on it. Running with 4 evade dice and ability to add an evade token makes it much harder to hit and frustrates opponents.

Concusion missiles. Firstly, you have Whisper who eats swarms for breakfast. Secondly, not many people run swarms (in fact, 2-3 ships seem most common), so the assault missile will do less damage to the main target, and rarely get 'splash' damage. Concussion missile provides more concentrated damage on a single target (generally focus firing things to death gives you better odds of winning because less things shooting back at you).

Winged Gundark is.....kinda terrible.

I would take Nightbeast in his place.

Thx for your reply! The option to take Mauler Mithel is quite good. But as a consequence, I think that my opponent my prioritise shooting Mauler first. He should stay close enough to the bomber to give him the second action, so he might not get in r1 for a long time, cause bomber doesn't want to get close. Still, it's an idea to be considered.

Nightbeast is better in defence, but I meant the TIE without SL to go as close to the enemy as possible, while he is focusing bomber. But on the other hand, I'm not guaranteed to get into r1 all the time, so getting a free focus and a barrel or evade might be useful.
