Generic game system based on EotE mechanics?

By Tauntaun, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi,

I'd like to know if anyone is aware of plans to reuse the SW:EotE game system in a more generic (SciFi or fantasy) setting. After years trying dozens of game systems, I fell in love for EotE's mechanics. I'd like to reuse it in other (mostly fantasy) settings but the existing material is so tied to SW that it would require a complete rewrite. Maybe FFG is on it?

Thx

The general response to this has been that it should work well as a re-skin without much more than new talent trees.

The real rub for a fantasy version is magic =/= the force.

As yet I haven't seen a good magic system that resembles what I tend to think of as the "fantasy" magic of DnD.

It may be that the narrative dice take on that looks very different. I love what I've heard about Force and Destiny's force powers.

The idea of "Edge of the British Empire" has crossed my mind, i.e., using it as a system for cliffhanger adventures, ranging anywhere from the 1880s into the 1930s.

Best magic systems I have seen have been Ars Magica and Shadowrun 3rd edition. Ars Magica is in depth and detailed as you would expect for a game about wizards and the Shadowrun system was very internally consistent and integrated with the game rules.

As is the system can be used for any heroic style game with the Force can be changed to psychic powers easily.

I'm waiting for a couple other campaigns to end so that I can start a medieval fantasy RPG in Tortall (from the Tamora Pierce books). The Gift (that setting's magic) is fairly intuitive and versatile, similar to the Force, so I'm trying to change as little as possible.

Thank you all for your prompt reply. I agree that EotE already has some "fantasy" stuff in: swords, bows, etc. Droids may be reskinned as some kind of golems. But classes probably need a total rework. Technicians, medics, most of the fighters are related to blast weapons... I don't know, I still think that the system is great, but it requires some major rework, something more than a simple reskin to work well.

@dfn thanks, I'll eagerly read that thread.

Although it's specifically built around the world of Howard's Conan the Barbarian (so relatively limited magic as opposed to high fantasy) there's a lot you could swipe. It could very easily be adapted to something more Tolkien-ish, however... all you'd have to do is build the races, which is relatively easy.

Which I'm now thinking about doing... crap.

I am using the NDS to build my own Witcher RPG set before the books and video games. I like a lot of what has already been done with NDS, but I think that I will change up how magic works and Signs work. I don't think the "Corruption" thing feels right in this particular setting. I will share what I have done on the NDS thread. I will also keep my Obsidian portal updated with our NDS rules and custom work.

I actually prefer the subtle magic of the Force to D&D magic -- if you want D&D spells, there's D&D. 5th Edition is really good, easily the best edition ever.

Moreover, the subtle magic of the Force could kinda drop right into a low-magic setting like Middle Earth. You don't need to roll for pips: just assume 1 pip per FR and maybe allow strain to be spent for more pips.
