How to beat Steward's Fear solo?

By leptokurt, in Strategy and deck-building

The one deck that did the trick was Outlands, but other than that this scenario seems to be pretty unbeatable in solo mode. Even with the updated card pool. So before putting this crappy designed peace of **** somewhere I cannot physically harm it, perhaps some of you managed to build decks that can win against SF.

I mself am thinking about building a deck around the superboys (spirit Glorfindel, Elrond/Loragorn and Gandalf) or an Ent deck.

Beating Steward's Fear solo it's definetly doable.

That being said, it might be you'll have to use the "superboys", or a least one of them.

I haven't a lot of experience with thematic decks, so I'm not sure whether there's one that can make it or not, but there probably is.

Anyway, I have a Gandalf/Grima/Glorf deck that made it solo against the NM version on first attempt, and after drawing Unholy Alliance as plot (maybe a bit of luck involved since I got Telemnar's Bane as the enemy).

Not sure that's what you are looking for, but if you're interested I could post the decklist.

Interested.

I have only one core set though, but I can improvise.

A dwarves deck can also beat it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiQoGiIlGlk. ;)

While dwarfs are not as bad as Outlands, they still feel like you're cheating. :P

I should also say that I am looking for a solo deck that is able to beat all three of the schemes. Clearly the designers saw a way to do that, otherwise the desgin of SF is utterly crap.

If I were to build a deck specifically for this quest, I'd make it a mono spirit deck with some combination of Sprifindel, Idraen, Eowyn, and Galadriel. Northern trackers and other shenanigans can help you avoid location lock. Heavy willpower saves you from the +1 card a turn plot, threat reduction saves you from the +2 threat per turn plot, and Will of the West saves you from the up in flames plot. With UC, you can quest with Idraen, explore location, defend with Idraen (with boost from Arwen), and attack with Idraen+Spirfindel, killing any enemy but the villian.

I'm going to try this out tonight and will let you know how it goes.

This is a slightly modfied version for Steward's Fear, mainly for Asfa and Will of the West, even though the latter works very well in general and it's definetly a change I'm considering, since this deck is very draw-heavy.

I tried again today, against NM Steward's Fear, and was able to beat it with a final score of 130 (11 rounds, 25 threat, 0 damage, 5 VP). I got Unholy Alliance and Hand of Castamir. I struggled a bit in the beginning due to Murderous Turncoat and Faithless Conspirators being revealed early, but otherwise it went smoothly.

I think Unholy alliance is by far the most difficult plot to beat (even though raise to power too might be very very bad in Solo); shouldn't have any trouble against Up in Flames (2x Will of the West) nor Poisoned Counsels, even more so considering you're aiming at beating normal difficulty (Rise to Power is nasty, but that's only for NM).

This deck needs 1-2 rounds to setup, but when it's up and running it will be almost impossible to lose; since Steward's has no enemies in setup you usually have the time you need to build up (WP is almost never a problem with 8 provided just by the heroes and with a few 2 WP allies); Asfaloth of course helps a lot.

One core set weakens this deck, but not to the point it's unplayable I think (thanks Shadowfax!); maybe you can proxy one Courage and one Test, but could even probably try without.

Hope it helps. :)

Edit: Sorry, forgot to mention getting a Local Trouble early on, when you still don't have Test of Will in hand is more or less game over, so it might be safer to put in some condition removal.

With UC, you can quest with Idraen, explore location, defend with Idraen (with boost from Arwen), and attack with Idraen+Spirfindel, killing any enemy but the villian.

Some will (again) probably say the Spirfindel makes an overpowered deck... And this is a complain that I'm geting very tired of hearing on the forums ("Outlands are broken", etc.).

NOTHING is broken or overpowered, because it all has to do with personal taste ans play style and how you play it.

You think dwarves are OP? try to play without dwarves allies and only dwarve heroes. Spirfindel is too much? Try to play him without Light of Valinor, and the Outlands : try playing thmen without Hirluion the Fair.

Or try Outlands, Sprifindel and dwarves againts StewardMs feat nightmare deck in solo... and watch what hapens!

BTW, I love your mono Spirit deck idea!

Danke schön, Eu8L1ch! :)

Just beat the scenario at my first try. The setup was Poisoned Counsels and Telemnar's Bane. It all went smooth and swiftly. Took me 12 turns and had a threat of 42 at the end. My heroes were badly damaged, cause got the Lembas only on my last turn. But that was the only problem I had to face.

Btw I replaced the missing cards with Henamarth, Shadowfax and 2 copies of Power of Orthanc. I think about adding a bit more healing (Self Preservation) to keep my heroes healthy.

I'm very glad it helped! :D

Henamarth surely is a good choice, I usually have him in. Deckspace is very tight, but search effects help a lot, so I can see making some room for him.

For healing, I think Waters of the Nimrodel could be handy for scenarios that inflict a lot of damage, but I have yet to test it.

Self preservation could work too of course, since most damage is usually dealt to Gandalf.
