Has combat turned to this?

By kinnison, in Game Masters

It is a droid? use the Ionization blaster

It has high soak? use stun... in fact.. use stun regardless

You are stuck at medium range? Okay i guess i will use the lethal setting. Unless someone here has the Strong arm talent and throw a stun grenade

AFAIK i think a weapon set on stun only was used once. Yet my game sessions, seem to have every combat now my players use stun. Kind of ruins the whole feel of star wars. and it makes it pointless to have enemies with decent amount of soak

Soak works against Stun Damage (which is fairly common), just not the Stun quality (which is fairly rare).

you listed that exactly backwards happy

No, I didn't. Look again.

I don't get this. Like HappyDaze said, soak works perfectly well against weapons with both "Stun Damage" and "Stun Setting". Only against "Stun" is soak discounted.

Oh, and if it's still a problem, give your NPCs a few ranks in Resolve. And talents like Second Wind and Intense Presence. Not to mention let them start at long range with some blaster rifles.

Opponents can heal their own strain with their spare advantages as well. Can't do that against wound damage.

Yeah, I suspect Kinnison's players are about to get some really bad news about a certain rules error they've been making...

Maybe he'll record and post it so we can see the looks on their faces...

Nothing like combat in a generator room with high ambient electromagnetic interference that negates stun..or even better, amplifies it in a radius around the firing party.

Players becoming familiar enough with the system enough to kinda game it must be a pleasure, I wish my players were as inclined to do it. Well, at least my NPCs do.

so where does it say that the stun setting on a weapon is damage? or it doesn't apply to soak. We can use the EotE core book for this

AFAIK soak only works against damage

Page 157 EoTE. Under Stun Damage (Passive). Stun (Active) is right next to it. Stun (Active) requires 2 advantage to activate and inflicts strain equal to the value in the profile, Stun 8 for example, not reduced by soak. If the profile says stun damage or stun setting then the strain damage is still reduced by soak. There are not very many Stun (Active) weapons because it is very powerful, can only think of 3 maybe 4 weapons in all the books.

Just thought of something else, say a PC is using an X-30 Lancer with mods so it has Pierce 4, and the PC switches to stun setting. Would you have the Pierce apply to the stun damage or no? Since the stun bolts are very different from the lethal bolts in the movies, granted we only see a stun bolt fired once as far as I can remember. I'm thinking yes by RAW since it applies to Blast.

Edit: X-30 doesnt have stun setting anyway, so say a normal blaster or heavy blaster with mods to get pierce.

p207: Soak does not reduce strain inflicted on a target, except in specific instances (such as with weapons with the Stun Damage quality).

I guess it depends. Weapons with built in stun as a setting often remove any incidences of pierce as soon as you switch over. Yet it isn't a standardised rule, so by raw you can still stun with peirce as an add on unless expressively stated. Though it isn't unreasonable to house rule that it doesn't. Stun ranged weapons are limited to short anyways, except in one particular example.

Pierce applies.

For some weapons like the Model 77 rifle, pierce has to apply, otherwise the quality would not make sense.
