Cluster-rockets

By steka, in X-Wing Rules Questions

how do cluster rockets work with gunner?

what happens when my target dies within the first attack? can i gunner? or what happens with my rocket?

what happens when same as the previous question + same ps target but i have ini?

(target stays because of same ps, but sould be dead. can i attack it again?)

general scenario: the second attack is supposed to miss

thanks for your help!

Cluster Missiles are complicated when used with Gunner.

1. First cluster attack misses which triggers Gunner. IF Gunner is used to make a primary weapon attack then second cluster attack does NOT happen.

2. First cluster attack misses which triggers Gunner. If Gunner is NOT used then proceed with second cluster attack. If the second cluster attack misses Gunner is again triggered and may be used to make a Primary Weapon attack.

3. First cluster attack hits. Second cluster attack misses which then triggers Gunner allowing for a primary weapon attack.

4. First cluster attack hits. Second cluster attack hits. Gunner sits there and does nothing.

IF you destroy your target with the first cluster attack then the second does not happen. It can not "miss" as there is nothing to shoot at and thus does not trigger an additional attack with Gunner. I guess if the target is still around due to simultaneous fire you could fire the second cluster at it and if that misses gunner would be triggered but this is a special case.

Cluster Missiles and Simultaneous Fire are two things that can cause a LOT of confusion in game.

Does not the FAQ specifically require that both attacks miss to trigger Gunner, thereby making your (3) invalid?

Your thinking cluster missiles and munition fail safe.

....

As mentioned that would be for Munitions Failsafe to trigger and allow you to keep your Cluster Missile. Gunner gets to trigger for each attack but note that it can only be used once and after that there would be no more attacks. The failsafe requires you not to hit at all while Gunner just requires the attack to miss.

I could point out that if you do happen to have Munitions Failsafe then example #1 should actually be triggered allowing you to keep the Cluster Missile. The Cluster attack doesn't hit anything so you keep the card.

This may seem obvious but I'd just like to clarify (my friend and I are both new players):

As Cluster Missiles are an attack which is performed twice, the defender is allowed to defend twice, right? (Two attacks allow for two defences)

Thanks in advance

That's correct: you roll defense dice separately for each of Cluster Missiles' two attacks.

...and it's also something new players often get wrong, so well done for spotting it!

I guess it should also be noted that Tokens spent will only modify one roll unless specified otherwise. This means a Focus token can modify attack or defense dice one time although they get rolled for two different attacks.
