The Concise/Collected Repaints Thread. Keep Them All Here, Keep Em Visible.

Swat Katz. Geez, I haven't heard that in a long time. Nicely painted!

Squint and Phantom. These are Soontir and Whisper in my custom scheme Imperial squad. Omega Leader to follow... soonish hopefully.

Swat Cats, now there's a cartoon I have not seen in a long time, a long time. Awesome, bring back memories of eating cereals and watching morning cartoons before school :)

Recently got into doing repaints and after doing a Kath Firespray I decided to do a Khiraxz based on the Turbokat from the cartoon Swat Katz.

Swat Katz intro for reference.

The Fox Abides!

I bit the bullet and decided to repaint my entire rebel fleet. I cleaned them all as best I could and removed most of the paint then hit them with some satin burgandy, then started layering on all the different elements from there. I found that my hand is not very steady and I had a lot of difficulty trying to paint the cockpit windows mostly. But I like them. I magnet modified all of them as well. I also haven't washed them with black/ white or anything yet for detail as I want to clean them up some more and try to make some cleaner lines, and redo the checker pattern on a couple ships. The black xwing is because I almost always fly poe and that makes him so much easier to keep track of. Sorry I don't really have the greatest camera, and am open to constructive critique or help.

So you painted a T-65 X-wing in Poe's colors, are you saying you use the T-65 model when you fly Poe?

Nope. I don't and did not realize what I had done till I was already done. It was getting kind of late and I was just sitting there with a paint brush ho-humming away. So now I guess I have a t-65 that needs to be totally repainted as well. And now I don't want to paint over any of my actual t-70s, so I'll likely just do something different than a "poe" paintjob. I guess everyone has one anyway.

Really not the same level as some beautiful things we can see here, but here's my newly customized Red Squadron, ready to blow some Death Stars !

Checkers are super time consuming and painstaking thing to try but dang that's a fine start right there.

I would go back again and back fill the lines to even them out more. then let it dry , avoid looking at them for a while. Then...look at them again and see if another little round of tidying will help. Do it like ..twice more.putting fresh eyes on that sort of pattern really helps to see what needs adjusting.

Other then that...a little wash all over the ships with a super thinned down black to make the panels pop and BAM...they will really look high end.

stormies awesome paint! like the maroons!!

Checkers:

On the larger ships, you can paint the field light grey and use painter's tape with a pencil or super fine marker to draw a grid. Then simply paint in the grid using black/white.

I really like the bold colour scheme you've chosen for those! It's quite scummy despite being a rebel fleet.

My main tip would be for the chequer board pattern; I painted a lot of 40k orks once upon a time!

-Block in the whole area white.

-Paint a grid out of straight lines using watered down black paint

-Fill in the alternate boxes with black

Hope that makes sense, it looks like you've tried to block them in individually?

I knew I had seen this somewhere before! Instagram for my photo addictions! lol

And I didn't notice that Black Leader was on the old style... partly that's because I don't have any T70 X-Wings yet...

I literally decided on this theme by browsing spray paint in the hardware store and found this dark red satin. I didn't want anything shiny, I wanted to make it look brand new but used. The checker theme was inspired by the emblem on Ravager's armor a-la starlord or Guardians of the Galaxy. The red kind of inspired the pattern - I wanted to do something a little weird.

For the checkers, What I did was paint a white field, then took black when it dried and tried to paint each block individually. I had not even thought about drawing the grid out. That would've helped considerably and came out better.

Checkers:

On the larger ships, you can paint the field light grey and use painter's tape with a pencil or super fine marker to draw a grid. Then simply paint in the grid using black/white.

So if I'm following correctly, this method involves making a primary field with gray, then draw a grid and fill in both the black and white. I'm not quite understanding what the painter's tape is for in this method? Is it being used as a straight edge for drawing?

Thanks, I believe I'll take all your guys advice, do a black wash on the ships, then repaint the checker fields with these methods and see how it comes out.

I didn't notice either. I have since scrubbed it and am turning it into the leader of my 4 x-wing pack. Also I prowl IG for xwing stuff all the time.

Man I miss Renegade Legion. Centurion and Interceptor were great games.

Holy Crap, that takes me WAY back... loved me some Renegade Legion. Now I've gotta dig out my copies...

Oops... got excited thinking about the Commonwealth & the TOG I double posted...

1. It will paint more easily over the red than white will so you can thin your paint more for a smoother finish.

2. As a rule of thumb, you never use straight white for anything but highlights.

3. Because it is a blend of white and black, so you can leave a thin line of it between your checks to blend the two colors and it'll help camouflage any small waves in your paint lines.

You use painter's tape to provide a straight edge when drawing your grid that also follows the contours of your model.

Some WIP ships for a commission I'm working on...

yLQOY24.jpg

Now those look like well used ships!

Nice weathering and shading/highlights.

Using the previously mentioned advice, I painted over the checker fields on all the ships with gray, then drew a grid, and then painted in with a smaller liner brush starting with the white, then the black after that dried. There's a bit more touch up, and detailing to do. The T-65 I repainted to match the rest of the fleet, instead of black, and there's a headhunter that I had to repair the mount on that wasn't pictured earlier, also my two N-1s that I got in the mail finally for fun. Tomorrow I'm going to start the process of matching a Tantive IV to the fleet. Now that I have a handle on the smaller brush I am able to put in much finer details that I am trying out. I couldn't get an acrylic wash to work, it wasn't going down between the panels like i had hoped so I actually sat down with a mechanical pencil and lined in the panels on my K-wing to try. It looks good but it took about an hour just for the one ship. Should I be using oil based paint for the wash? Or do I need to use a seperated pigment paint?

Also thanks for the help guys, the difference in the checker pattern is night and day. Way better.

Now that the pattern is done on all of them I'm going for the details next and dirtying them up.
