The Concise/Collected Repaints Thread. Keep Them All Here, Keep Em Visible.

By Gadge, in X-Wing

I would hit it with the airbrush, but the TIE thrusters are freaking tiny. If only the thing on the back that looks like an engine was actually an engine...

Along with xwing I play 40k, with that I don't like to paint over onto models that have been painted. Has anyone stripped these models and using what? Don't want to throw my ships into something then have them destroyed by the chemicals.

Astel, I've painted minis for years, and the X-Wing miniatures base coat is a dream to paint over. It practically acts as a primer in itself. It also takes spray primer itself with absolute minimal loss of detail.

Long story short, I just don't think they're worth the effort of stripping!

Definitely tough to strip. I've tried, and the paint seems to have endless layers each more firmly bonded than the last; I still haven't managed to get it all off after like 5 days in the stripper. And the peg has gone super cloudy. Not worth it unless you already screwed up a paint job.

Soak the model in Super Clean for 48 hours and it'll peel most any kind of paint off while not melting the plastic, though it doesn't do much to the TIE/FO's paint.

Super Clean doesn't exist this side of the pond; Dettol is the recommended British acrylic paint stripper, but it's having a tough time with the factory paintjob.

I use a paint brush to do it.

I have see. People painting the solar ion panel as a thruster.

This comes down to preference.

Painting straight on top is fine, and stripping and base coating also works well.

That's actually really cool!

The best place to look for tutorials, I find, is youtube. If you're after an intro to painting more generally, rather than X-wing specifically, check out Games Workshop's 'Warhammer TV' channel on there, there's some very nice beginner videos that are professionally filmed, easy to follow and well-presented. The same techniques apply to X-wing as Warhammer minis, so it's a good place to start.

You'll get all sorts of mileage with two easy steps.

1. Recollpr the model in whatever pattern or colors you like with thinned layers.

2. Use games workshop 'nuln oil' or make your own dark washes with very thin colors(try a black one and a dark brown one). All over the model.

From there, experiment and have fun. I like to go back to the main color also quite thinned but use it to bring back the colors just on the tops of panels and details.also mess around with picking out small details on the model like vents, lights, gun barrels etc. In a contrasting color.

Hey Thanks for the advice guys I will check it out and as soon as I can paint something I will post it.

I LOVE the Punisher skulls!!!

Thanks Red 7! Your repaints are pretty awesome man!

So, I got a bottle of Rubbing Alcohol from my local Pharmacy...

Sat the model in it for 20 minutes, then Toothbrush Scrub... Right down to the bare plastic.

Haven't been playing X-Wing long, but this is what I've got so far:

Was. Haven't really played 40k for probably 6-ish years, but I'm still a fan of the BA's aesthetics.

So there was no damage or softening to the model with this method?

Can't wait for the Death Company Tie Fighters!!! :P

Red7 - There was not, that I could tell... The Paint tried to go a little goopy, and needed an actual scrub.. But it came off.

Lord forgive me for what I've done;

The glue FFG use is INSANELY good. It took me the best part of half an hour to get these off and not without massive damage to the pegs in all but one engine. It was so good that the turbine cap on the end of the engines is almost impossible to remove without a jewellers saw type thing and I don't have one fine enough.

Now to figure out a good colour scheme for the engine glow...

That is definitely a stressful stage of the project!

Well done.

What are your thoughts for Colour so far?

Pretty ballsy to tear that ship apart like that! I'd go with red, as in the movie (if I recall correctly).

Looking at the movie, it is red / reddy-orange... But I'm finding the effect hard to envisage with those little turbine pieces getting in the way of a smooth blend or whatever. I'm contemplating spraying the spokes white.

You've gone that far...might as well LED it at this point.

I debated LEDing it but eventually decided against... I simply don't have time to learn basic electronics and think it would look out of place with my other models. Baby due in 4 weeks so I need to finish projects sooner rather than later! I found a good colour scheme for reference though so it won't be long before its done.

Congratulations! And yes, paint as fast as you can!!!

You are about to have a new hobby... Your child :)
