The Concise/Collected Repaints Thread. Keep Them All Here, Keep Em Visible.

By Gadge, in X-Wing

Cheers. It's based on nose art from a Republic Gunship set Lego put out.

My first step into X-Wing's The Force Awakens models:

That is great. The extra splash of orange really helps it "pop".

Gotta' ask, though: How did you get such fine lines for the markings on the wings? Masking tape was my plan, until I tried to do it. They're so small. Major props if it was freehand. Still major props if it was anything else.

Thanks.

The stripes on the wings were done by free hand.

I can share my technique and you are more than welcome to try it.

- First I paint the lines in blue, getting them as smooth and straight as possible.

Thinned paints is as always a vital component with this step, its always better to do several passes rather than one thick one.

If I am lucky, they turn out ok and I can move on.

- If the lines are not evenly spaced, or are too thick/thin, I will go back with the base colour and the blue paint and even out the spacing and thickness of them until I am happy.

- I basically keep repeating these steps until I am happy with them.

I would say #1 tip is keep the paint thin

Lately I have found that rubbing alcohol removes paint very accurately. Layer by layer at times!!!

I have dipped a fine detail brush into the rubbing alcohol and used it as an "eraser" to clean up edges, and to lessen weathering where I have gotten too carried away :P

Give these tips a try, and let me/us know how you get on.

So, the window canopy of one of my Aggressors came slightly under-filled from the factory, it's nothing major, but I'd like to fill it in before repainting the Aggressor. Seeing as I don't plan on going full bore with model modification in the short term, what would be the easiest way to fill it in?

Depends on where the void is and how deep. You can try super glue and talc. If the void is in a place that's sandable, Squadron Green Stuff thinned with liquid cement works well. Thin the green stuff a little with a little cement and use a wire or toothpick to apply. You can use a brush dampened with cement to smooth out the application.

Which paint did you do for the hull?

I use a 50/50 mix of Vallejo Stone wall and White.

Then when I am finished the model I wash it with a 2:1 water GW Nuln oil wash.

Thanks I have been thinking about repainting ships but I used Celstine Grey and I didn't like how it turned out.

Finally got around to repainting some Rebel ships - I've been playing these guys more frequently than my Scum ships, lately:

My Omega Leader, to go with Soontir and Whisper in my tournament squad (of course, I've since dropped Whisper for Vader. I'll get to him >.<)

I'm sure it's been posted in here, but there are 41 pages and I wasn't up for flipping through all of them. I have a pretty decent Mod and Repaint group on FB for painters and modders of all skill levels. Take a look if you haven't already! :)

Okay, still trying things out with painting (my first repaint, which I started last summer and still have not had time to complete, can be found here ), and I really want to do OSL for engines. However, I'm struggling to get the fade between layers right. I watched this tutorial, which was very helpful, but I'm not satisfied with the results (the Lambda was a particular disappointment, as it should be the easiest due to surface area, and it started out the best).

So, for fading, do I wait for layers to dry or paint in-between fade colours on top of still-drying colours? In this case, I mixed 4 shades of blue, ranging from virtually straight blue to almost entirely white, and used the darkest blue as my base coat. After that dried, I applied the second-darkest blue to a smaller area, and while that was still drying, applied the second-lightest blue to a still smaller area. Once all that had dried, I applied the lightest blue (almost white) to the smallest central portion. However, he results were less than satisfying. I'd say the Defender looks best.

And I will applaud myself for finally thinning my paints enough - I only had one globby stroke (on the Lambda, which became a nightmare to remove), which has been very hard to achieve as a newbie.

Feedback and suggestions much appreciated!

What you have going actually isn't a bad start at all. If you want you can smooth the transitions from light to dark on the engine glows by washing the entire area a couple times with some blue. But ...on a table, at normal viewing distance I'm pretty sure you have the engines well enough.

This is kind of just a taste thing. I like the different tones on engine glow and having them blend together due to viewing distance. Like paintings done with pointalism.

But I do ships both ways.

I especially like the GR 75 as is...its like van Gogh starry night to me.

Also...for blending...do it before they dry.

The process is actually called ' wet blending'

Here a friend of mine talks about it in regards to a power sword, but it's the same technique you want...

Apologies for the terrible quality pics, but here's the start of my first ever repaints.

The gunmetal looks much better IRL, and like it's not in need of a wash, unlike the brown. Speaking of the brown, I'm debating whether to keep it that way or switch it up for something more coppery, and then a wash on everything.

Finished up two ywings for my rebels. Here's some pics with the squad that I flew them with at store championship last weekend.

Do you have a blog or something where we can see more pics of these Y-Wnigs and T-70? They're supreme!

I do but haven't posted any of my repaints on it. Maybe I should :)

Here's one I had fun doing. Not the best quality job, but hey I just started painting.

First and Foremost, we've got Darth Swagger, Lord of the Bling in his solid gold TIE Advanced. Sporting an advanced sensor array, upgraded engines, and a speaker system who's destructive power was tested on the planet of Alderaan.

The pictures don't give a good view of it, but I tried using a turquoise wash to give the gold a more tarnished look. (though they do tell me that my phone's camera has a default image size that is waaay too big XD)

Yes ... Yes you should.

On the topic of things you should be doing. You should also be asking for my address, you should be making a trip to the post office and you should be sending me each of these ships now!
