Walking Small and Carrying the BFG!

By HappyDaze, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

One of my players is looking at making an Ace/Gunner and was considering the Sullustan species. Now these guys are on the smaller end of Silhouette 1, so it's plausible that--with the appropriate mix of Brawn and Attachments--the character might be able to pack a Jury Rigged-modified Heavy Blaster Rifle or even a Light Repeating Blaster for providing "big fudging gun" (BFG) support when out-of-vehicle.

However, the player is now considering the Chadra-Fan species for the same role. These guys are Silhouette 0. Even though they start with Brawn 1, it's fairly simple to raise it to 2 or even 3 during character creation. Combine that with the weapon mount/sling attachment and the tiny guy with the BFG seems mechanically sound.

However, I am curious if there is anything in the rules to prevent this? Do Silhouette 0 characters have any added complications when using Cumbersome weapons (like maybe counting their Brawn as one lower than it's actual value) or do they have reduced Encumbrance limits compared to the typical Silhouette 1 species options? If I missed something, please point it out to me.

I don't ever recall reading such a thing...

I think the biggest concern I'd have is Chadra-fan can hit Agility 5 at creation. They'll be brawn 1.... but with a weapon harness that can still allow heavy rifles, grenade launchers, flechette launchers, missile launchers, heavy flamethrowers...

So you may need to take action to rope that rat in if he tries to go munchkin on you in a slightly more literal way then usual...

The player is looking at 2/4/3/2/2/2 for either species. The only statistical differences would be:

Chadra-Fan has one less WT and one greater ST than the Sullustan.

Chadra-Fan ignores two Setback on Perception checks and is Silhouette 0 while the Sullustan gets on rank of Skilled Jockey.

Each species starts with a different free skill rank, but the player plans to spend 5XP to pick up a rank in the other skill, so it's irrelevant.

Silhouette 0 just gives you an excuse to say he gets thrown across the room when he rolls threats. :P

Juriel's got it. The cumbersome quality is there to ensure that whenever uses it has the necessary brawn to do so, or suffer the penalties. The character spent the XP and/or credits to have their character work with those penalties, no need to penalize them even further. Have fun with threat and despair and make sure to describe how silly awesome the character looks.

One again the fact that you can make a Chadra-Fan almost as physically imposing as a Wookiee in this game just boggles my mind. Sometimes too much detail gets lost in the name of game balance.

Maybe it's the Andre the Giant of Chadra Fan. I'd consider requiring some decent narrative reason for a Chadra Fan to go beyond Brawn 2...maybe he was dumped in a vat of nerf growth hormone as a kid. By Brawn 3 I'd lose the Silhouette 0 status, it makes no sense.

Brawn isn't bulk, though. Brawn is a representation of how well the character can apply their power and toughness:

"A character's Brawn represents a blend of a character's brute power, strength, and overall toughness, as well as the ability to apply those attributes as needed. Characters with a high Brawn are physically fit and hardy, rarely get sick, and have strong constitutions."

A high Brawn silhouette 0 character can be gymnast fit instead of body-builder bulky.

Also, Weequay have Brawn 3, same as Trandos/Wookies, despite not being exceptionally strong - it's there to show them just being that **** tough and boney. It doesn't have to mean mega-muscles.

(though I bet Brawn 6 jawa/chadrafan would look awesome!)

Gonna cost the rodent far more to get there than the Wookie though.

it totally equals out when the Wookiee is paying to get his Agility and Intellect up to the levels the Chadra-Fan. In fact, the Wookiee would need to spend 60 XP to get to 3/3/3/2/1/2 while the Chadra-Fan can get there for 50 XP.

Not seeing the issue.

Our group has a 2/4/2/3/2 human female with 3 ranks in burly, with a weapon harness carrying the HOB repeater. She describes her as strong, lean and carries the HOB almost exactly like they do in the Aliens movie.

My first Edge game included a Jawa who, many sessions in, hit upon using the weapon harness and an armor mod to let himself carry a VERY large gun. He'd been studying the droid Bounty Hunter's programming you see. Anyway, it was a lot of fun, and yes, too much threat meant the little bugger went skidding backwards from the recoil.

Let's not use comics as some sort of guide as to what weapons different sizes can carry, shall we?

Not to mention the fact that he somehow "hides" that under his robes, when not using it :/
