Top 5 Non-Collectible Miniature Lines--Spring 2015

Top 5 Non-Collectible Miniature Lines (hobby channel) reflects sales in Spring 2015. The charts are based on interviews with retailers, distributors, and manufacturers.

1 - Warhammer 40k - Games Workshop
2 - Star Wars X-Wing - Fantasy Flight Games
3 - Star Wars Armada - Fantasy Flight Games
4 - Warmachine - Privateer Press
5 - Hordes - Privateer Press

I think Armada surprises me a bit. Did not see that level of acceptance that it beat Privateer Press but not shocked at all.

soon, we'll be on top

just waiting for the ISD :)

Guardian Games which for those that don't know is a 10,000 square footage game store has reported that Armada was the second best seller and has been up there in the top 5 since the first 30 days of release.

I mean, Armada is f***ing amaze-balls as a game. It should be up there.

And I say this as a dedicated gaming snob who, for years, wished someone would make a modernized version of BattleFleet Gothic, which was a fantastic concept with fantastic models that had some basic mechanical failings.

Then Armada happens. This is well-deserved for FFG, and I am not that surprised, given the quality of the game.

The only reason Warhammer is up there is probably because

  1. They 'sponsored' the article.
  2. You need to own an F-Tonne of figs to field an army.

If we needed to field 17 VSD's and 45 Gladiators, armada would probably be number 1.

It is worth noting that Hordes and Warmachine are the same game. I am unsure why they are still seperates when it comes to rankings like these. But still the fact that Armada us in that conversation is awesome.

Because they are two separate, compatible games. Not the same game, to Privateer Press.

I suppose that's technically correct

really though, the games are exactly the same aside from the interaction between warcasters-warjacks and warlocks-warbeasts

everything else, the stats-movement-combat-dice rolling-objectives-victory by assassination-power attacks-spell casting-EVERYTHING, is exactly the same

It's strange that PP would classify them as different, apart from the fact that "Warmahordes" is a very ***** title for a game system :P

Not challenging the fact that they do it, because they do, it just seem misleading.

When I think "compatible" I think of how Warhammer fantasy figs are "compatible" with age of sigmar, as in you can use them but they're nothing alike to what they used to be. Whereas the emperor Karl Franz had a bunch of magical items and a giant monster, now he has you growing a magnificient beard to get stat bonuses. Where the mad count had dice rolls to determine which of his multiple personalities took form, making him an unpredictable loose canon, now you have to pretend to ride and talk to an invisible horse to get re-rolls.

God I remember when the list just got attention on the Internet, GW didn't even acknowledge any competition and was King of the Hill having the Monopoly on miniature wargames. Now their brand is tarnished bad and the competition is catching up and they still act like they don't have competition and just blame their customers for not buying more.

Their arrogance is going to be the reason they collapse and then FFG won't just have their IP rights but they will buy out GW.

Double that number and you're close! I see people complain about Armada's cost and I laugh in comparison to GW stuff.

Hmmmm what was it back in 5th edition, $500 would get you a 1750 army (not the best but ok)

The other thing is if you added in the fact that X-Wing and Armada are just two of the many successful games FFG sells you can start to see GW's big F-up. They had the market cornered and They messed up their own business by making stupid stupid decisions.

AoS is their latest mistake and that will cost them their old WHFB players in the hopes to draw new players away from the aforementioned Games. Add in Malifaux and I just don't see it happening. (Now I will recieve a Cease and Desist order for mentioning them here. :P)

I am most likely going to be selling off all my GW products soon because I just see their games getting worse and worse while the other games are getting better and better. AoS will go down as the day GW Jumped the Shark.

I had not realized you changed your avatar and signature. . .

As for selling your WFB (AoS now?) NR will be sad about that.

It's good to see armada doing so well. Going to be demoing armada at the first weekend of August to try to drum up some interest in the game around here. The store owner is going to set out multiple sets including mine for demo purposes. I'm hopeful it will, start to catch on in my area.

Stuff

But as for FFG's future it just looks good for them as they continue to put out the best rules with great models. Another company could learn from them..... but they won't.

Catching up? No, honestly with 4 out of 5 games are by 2 seperate companies GW has lost. They only keep the top rank due to inflated prices in areas like Australia. I will admit I had a 10k point 'nid army and a 6.5k Blood Angels army bit I can't stand GW. They know where they go wrong yet they encourage more and more codex creep as well as army of the month style of play. Yes I am mad at them.

Frig, don't I know that sentiment: I've got a 3K Vostroyan Imperial guard infantry army (130 metal models isn't cheap) with heavy armour support including a baneblade. Then a 4K Sons of Medusa force. It pales compared to my Fantasy stuff though: 9K Empire, 7K Bretonnians, 7K High Elves, 6K Skaven, 6K Dwarves (and a few more 1K 'starter' armies in Fantasy and 40K) all of them converted but all of them GW.

Now, try stomaching the line, “It's because of people like you that Fantasy failed, it's aaaall your fault! Now suck it up and play Age of Sigmar like a good boy.” I've been playing since 2E 40K and 5E Fantasy, got 'the Gothic', and without drama, I'm sort of finally burned out with GW's handling of just about everything.

I digress. As much as I love Armada, I'm surprised to see it so high on that list! Delighted, don't get me wrong, but surprised.

Before you sell off any GW fantasy models take a look at Kings of War by Mantic games. Rules co-written by Alessio Cavatore and army lists for 11 factions in one book. And they are working on second book for armies made up of mixtures they don't make themselves, in case you have some spare lizards, rat, skeletons, etc laying around looking for rules to play by. Almost any figure made by GW has a place in Kings of War.

And their http://www.manticgames.com/games/dreadball.html'>DreadBall is insanely fun to play.

Yeah, Kings of War is the way forward IMO, and I say that as a 21 year veteran of WHFB.

:D

For half a second I thought you had said "21 year old" at first and was in middle of rolling my eyes when I caught my mistake. I've seen Kings of War but Mantic has never really appealed to me. Now old Mordheim still does appeal to me but I don't need three very big armies to play it.

Great to see Armada so high up in the list in such a short time.

I just hope their prices don't reach GW heights as well. FFG democratized miniatures gaming for so many of us.

GW's fall of pride began back in the early 90s. Greed drove them to revamp proven rules sets into abominations that crashed and burned, in an attempt to sell new minis. Warhammer and 40K kept them alive far longer than they deserve. BFG was the last GW product I spent cash on, never again. Few things would make me happier than to see GW sold off bit by bit.

Curious how these are considered "non-collectible" given the quality of the minis.
