Need a Twist for My Next Game

By GM Hooly, in Game Masters

Hey Guys,

In my last game (my second campaign), the PCs stole a shipment of spice for a client (although the client claimed the spice was "medical supplies". The job involved attacking a swoop gang's hideout, wiping out the swoop gang and then stealing the cargo. Unfortunately, a local Rebel Leader (and Councilman within the planet's Government) was also present and was attempting to negotiate with the swoop gang members to buy the spice so it could be refined in the planet's underground movement to make stim packs.

Unfortunately, the PCs didn't really ask many questions, and the councilman was killed - you know...no witnesses and all.

Now the crew are making their way back to their base of operations, and their intention is to replace the spice with Stim Packs, and claim that this was what they found, but offer to "look into it" for their client, and fleece him of more credits when they "find" the missing spice cargo.

Beyond that ruse, I'm a but stumped where o go from here. I'd really like the following to happen in the session:

1) They get invited to a big stakes gambling game

2) They get another job offer

3) They have a run in with another chapter of the swoop gang they just destroyed.

I should also point out that nobody's Obligation has been triggered.

The PCs are a Gank Mercenary, a Trandoshan businessman, a Human bush pilot, a Dug mechanic, and a human gambler.

Here is the scrawl for the start of the game:

TALES OF THE SOLAY EXPRESS
EPISODE III
The Big Gamble

Lockdown! Rebellious activity continues to plague the military forces on Solay, the unrest resulting in a battalion of Imperial Stormtroopers being dispatched to the planet to quell the mounting descent.

With security forces spread across the system, a planet wide search continues for those responsible for the horrific murder of well-respected Solay High Council member, NASIAN LOGE.

Meanwhile, SLYSSK, and the crew of the Solay Express, flee the capital with their cargo of highly illegal spice, recovered from the scene of the Councillor's murder. Unfortunately their flight to freedom is cut short, as they are once again pursued across the desert...

Thoughts?

Bruce Willis was a ghost THE WHOLE TIME,

Have a contact of the businessman invite him and the human to a Sabaac game. During the game, the idle chit-chat mentions the death/disappearance of the councilman. If he was left at the scene, the current constabulary is cracking down on the swoop gang very hard. If he's missing, his last known location was the swoop gang's hideout and the same pressure is brought to bear.

Through the underground, the Mercenary hears word that some people are looking to get off planet quickly and that there's good credits in it for the right crew who can make it happen. It's the swoop gang looking to get off planet until the heat dies down. They're writing off the spice as the entire situation has gotten way too hot with the death of the councilmen bringing serious Imperial attention on the matter. This can give the crew the opportunity to play both sides of the game (and give them a really nice opportunity to shoot themselves in the foot, if played wrong).

The Empire has locked down the planet and, since they knew about the spice shipment as their security isn't as lax as most people think it is, just corrupt, they're looking for the spice with a vengeance. After all, the councilman was well-liked by the locals and, if the Empire can find his killer, they'll get good press and are using this as a cover to implement martial law.

Those aren't really twists so much as a logical escalation of the situation. Feel free to add salt to taste.

Are you sure there are not witnesses ? Unless they rigged the building and blew it up, there could have been one gang member hiding in a near buy crate that saw everything.... now there contact tells the player there was a witness and that they need to take her out or their cover will get blown...

Councilman murdered in a local swoop gang hideout ... the local security forces will try to find the ones responsible for that... the Imperials will probably send the BSI to investigate why he was there, maybe trying to find if he was collaborating with scums or rebels.... and the local rebel cells will probably investigate also to find out if their cover was blown and who was responsible... allied swoop gangs might also look into it, afraid a rival gang is trying to take over their turf...

Local spice trade could be thin and it could be easy to find their client/contractor and link him to the players... anyone of the above could bust your player's contact and put pressure on the players... anyone or even everyone :P

If your players already delivered the spice... they could receive a call from their client asking them if they left any witness, telling them that he thinks he's getting shadowed and that he's afraid for his life.... that they need to clean up this mess or they won't find work in this part of the galaxy ever again... Now, when they try to meet their client, they find him dead with a datapad with all their IDs left on the counter... when they get out of the building, they come face to face with another gang looking for the spice.

Anyway.... lots of ways you can have fun with the mess they are right now :)
Just don't let them off the hook too easily.

There was a single witness who ran off from the scene.

I should also mention a few points:

1) The councilman is a Rebel sympathiser.

2) The PCs are the ones who killed him because they wanted "no witnesses"

1) A suspected rebel sympathiser was killed in a suspected fight between rival swoop gangs, what no one knows is that there was a member of the ISB present who was badly injured to the point of needing cybernetic replacement parts.

He fingered the PCs gang and whilst unable to provide full details on their identities since he was caught by surprise and was left for dead for pretty good reasons from the PCs perspective they have no idea who he is nor that he survived.

2) The witness is actually a catspaw used to bring the PCs out of hiding so the Empire and ISB can capture them hoping they can confirm the councillor's true affiliation although aren't above faking it by making the PCs part of the local rebel cell if it suitably vilifies the now late councillor.

3) The spice was supplied by Jabba the Hutt's cartel and worse still they haven't been paid and now the PCs have his unpaid merchandise and he wants payment... its not at the stage that he sends a certain Mandalorian but I figure they might start taking notice if their fence starts having panic attacks after examining the spice's authenticity and realises who they stole it from...

4) The spice is actually Kolto designed as a much weaker and older variant of Bacta, in sufficient quantities it could be sold to fill a bacta tank... if they have the means to convert it from its current state that is.

If the local Imps and crime cartels are looking for the spice as it is and its too hot to sell on without getting identified maybe converting it into something less illegal may help offset their problem...

5) Remember the local rebel cell?

Guess who are now looking for you guys after all you just wasted the local leader and brought the Imps down on the world now they need to arrange the PCs quick apprehension to defuse the issue especially as its become clear a member of ISB was also caught in the crossfire meaning they need a catspaw to take the blame and heat off of them... guess who volunteered?

I GM a game of about 12 people and they had a we had one where two of the PCs were captured by a local tribe on a random planet that they were on. The two that were captured were binded with this naturally jelly. When the other PCs found them the tribe told them that the jelly was actually deadly and that withing 3 days (4 hours in playing time literally. I marked on the clock) they would die if it was not taken off. Anyone who touched the gel would be contaminated also. They tribe didn't have ships, but needed some things for a sacrifice for their Gods. The PCs threatened the tribe with guns and the tribe didn't care because they felt death was just passing on to worship there Gods more - Really frustrated the PCs.

I had a side mission too where they could help a boy that his mom and sister also had the gel on them. Half decided to help the boy and the other helped with getting the things for their team. After going to a couple planets they found the stuff with barely enough time. On the way back they got sucked into by an emperial ship. The pilot did a check and barely got them out. They got back and the time had passed. I let them do a roll to see if the pilot went fast enough to cut the time down and he failed. They arrived and the 2 died. It was a really crazy mission and giving them a time limit really pushed them and kept everyone on the edge of their seats. There were some hard feelings after, but about a week later everyone said it was there favorite mission because they were all sweating about it.

The councilman was wearing a wire, and video of the PC's killing him was being watched live by ISB officers.

The PC's return to find their ship under lockdown with a whole squad of troopers waiting outside, a broadcast then happens announcing a large reward for their capture dead or alive.

It's time to leave the planet, their one chance is to sign up as crew (or stow away) on a huge freighter. The freighter has been hired to take a shipment from an hyperdrive factory to a moon in a nearby system and needs some extra crew to fend off pirates or rebels, he'll drop you off with the cargo.

The PC's part way with the freighter at the moon, with a nice bonus for defeating a rebel attack.

As they are saying farewell to the captain they see the cargo being unloaded, to their surprise it's not a shipment of 1,000 hyperdrives but a single huge hyperdrive.

Somewhat unsettled, they leave the spaceport and head into the city.

The streets are deserted with signs of struggles everywhere, upturned chairs, pools of blood and half eaten meals etc.

Return to the spaceport is impossible, there are too many troopers and a surprising number of droids in the way.

Some investigation reveals a handful of survivors hiding in the city, they tell the PC's that tens of thousands of people were rounded up and frozen at the carbonite processing plant. They are being loaded aboard the huge freighter at the shipyard. The PC's guess that they were payment for the hyperdrive shipment.

The freighter can be seen taking off in the distance, soon after the moon the party is on enters hyperspace.....

We know from the death star that something the size of a small moon can enter hyperspace, so why not strap a death star hyperdrive onto a small moon and crash it into a planet (Mon cal).

If set before ANH this could be a test of the new hyperdrive technology, before it is deployed to the death star.

After ANH this could be retaliation for the destruction of the death star, the empire wasn't willing to wait years for the next one to be built.

... the moon drops out of hyperspace above a populated planet and a planetary shield is raised over the spaceport and city, this prevents the defender's of the planet from stopping the approaching moon. Only the PC's who are already under the shield stand a chance.

Easy. There's a Black Sun logo on the underside of the crate.

(Cue danger music!)

Or, if ever in doubt, just steal the entire plot-line of 'No Country for Old Men'.

Did they check for tracking devices on the spice cache?

Well reason (and the character who is the businessman) prevailed and they returned the stolen spice to the person who had employed them to collect the cargo. This resulted in a "brownie point" as such, and the crew were invited to a private party being held by the leader. It would appear that there were some notable movers and shakers of the sector present, and some of the characters made some very nice contacts indeed, including being employed by an Imperial Commander to "collect" a piece of artwork that was "stolen" from him (read: lost in a game of sabaac).
