Is the Bow from... The Legend of Zelda!?

By Filippo, in Talisman

Ciao :) I have a theory about the Bow

In Talisman there are a lot of weird effects for their respective cards... one of the most particular is the Bow from the City expansion

" At the start of battle , you may roll 1 die and add the result to your attack score . You may only do this once per battle .

Whenever you use the Bow, you must either discard 1 gold or discard the Bow."

The first thing we can notice is that the Bow is not classified as a weapon... but there is something even more interesting.
Why do we discard 1 gold? For a materialization of an arrow? For an oath? How does it really work?

Here the flash of inspiration, a secret, maybe the same of the Game Makers:
The Bow of Talisman that you find in the Armoury of City comes from Hyrule, the kingdom of The Legend of Zelda!

Now let me explain:
If you have played the first The Legend of Zelda of 1986 for NES you should remember the special features of this item: every time you use the Bow, YOU THROW 1 ARROW AND LOSE 1 RUPEE (Coin of Hyrule).
So... practically arrows and money become the same thing for the gamer. No cash, no arrows...

The Bow of Talisman is the same Bow of The Legend of Zelda!

There's also a Mirror Shield from the Frostmarch and City expansions, though it is not as powerful as the original Mirror Shield from the Zelda. There's also a Sword of Destiny in the Woodland that looks pretty much as the Master Sword.

Thank you for the information! I'll check!

I't' s so magic... I did'n t like the Bow, now I like it :)

When I first looked at the artwork of the Sword of Destiny I immediately thought about the Master Sword and the Pedestal of Time from "A Link to the Past". The Mirror Shield doesn't look much as the original one, but at least the name counts ;) .

Haha fantastic! This sounds like an amazing opportunity to create a Zelda expansion! J With Magical Objects like the boomerang and Ocarina! :) Oh this could be great! Thanks for pointing this out guys! :)

I have created quite a lot of Zelda homebrew cards and characters, but since I like only 2D Zeldas (Oracle series, L'A, ALttP, TMC, PH, ST), and so I'm a minority here, You probably won't like my cards =P

I love all zelda games, my favourite is twilight princess because i like the atmosphere

For me it would be Oracle of Ages (for gameplay) and Link's Awakening (for story). Plus, I do like the Ballad of the Windfish...

It's nice to see some fellow Zelda fans! Ocarina of Time is my favorite overall, and like Nemo, the Oracle series for gameplay, and Link's Awakening for story!

But my favorite modern "Zelda" game is Dark Souls. It's basically what the NES Zelda would be like if it were created today! Limited instruction, illusory walls, NPCs hidden in random caves amongst the enemies...

And indeed, the first thing I thought of when reading the bow from Talisman City was the NES Zelda bow. :)

haha actually they are the only Zelda's I really know! I loved Link's Awakening as a young boy; I completed it after months of trying and was extremely pleased with myself! :) I watched A link to the Past being played by my brother alot, then I got my hands on it once he had finished and had a fantastic time geting lost in dark world  I was about 18 by the time oracles can out I think, I had the Seasons and loved it. I never got round to playing the Ages but think i will give it a go on emulator sometime.

Do you remember the cartoon series back in the late 80's? Perhaps that could give me good artwork for some cards? :)

It is quite rare for Artaterxes to agree with me, so it is even more nice to know he likes the same Zeldas as I!

I didn't see the Zelda cartoon, because it never came to Poland. Instead, I was watching soviet cartoons xD (which nota bene were quite watchable..).

But yeah, I also played the Oracles as a kid, first had the Oracle of Season series. Of course I was stuck.. (I remember I had two seasons and was unable to pass a certain dungeon), but after a few of months (or half a year..) I finally found the way. Then one day by a chance I managed to notice the Ages on a bazaar, and purchased it too. I think in total I beat the game at lest 12 times if not more xD. Especially that each Oracle series had 3 different endings, and after a few years I replayed them again too.

About ALttP I remember exactly the dungeon where I was stuck for YEARS! It was the one with two invincible Bow-Wows xD. But one day I launched the game again, and by mistake I managed to beat the level. Then I tried to play its remake for GBA, but I felt the buttons to be too much off, and never finished it.

I loved the Link's Awakening for the story very much. I liked it because of how different the story (and ending) was compared to the other Zeldas. The Link's Awakening doesn't end with a happy ending. Unlike all other Zeldas I know. Majority of my Zelda homebrew cards are related exactly to this game. I made tyhe Ballad of the Windfish, Link card that if he hears the Ballad he remembers about the world he destroyed. Or Koholint - an egg surrounded by an island. The Windfish. When I was given a chance to write an article about the Sacred Pool for the Talisman publisher, I wrote it as if was a parody of the Zelda games xD. My most recent Zelda card though is Ben Drowned, though.

Nah, your ideas are good. I only disagree with you when you forget not every Talisman player is a hardcore homebrew master. :P
