Breaking the Meta

By Stay On Target, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey everyone! If you have read the 2015 Regional Standing thread that was compiled you can see that the current "strongest" builds are the same as they have every been. Here is an article I wrote on the subject on the subject. Check it out and post comments below. Let me know what you think and what we can do to Break the Meta!

What the heck is RAC ?

Probably best to include some explanation of the lists you are talking about in the article.

Rear Admiral Chiraneau... It's literally almost impossible to not know that...

I didn't know that.....there are new players here too.

Clearly it is not impossible. I call him Chiraneau others call him Chirpy.

And my my point is when writing an article better to explain than to use shorthand that not everyone will know or use.

Agreed. When writing any form of article, acronyms should always be defined upon their first use no matter how specific the target audience may be as you'll have a wider impact by not alienating others that might potentially be interested in what you have to say. Source: I'm not a journalist but am in research (maybe the rules are more relaxed in journalism, but the principles should be the same) and when reading works by others it would be impossible to even read a single paper from an unfamiliar topic if all of the acronyms had to be dug up in the referenced works.

Have you read any articles on advanced metagame development? Your article doesn't really push the boundary of knowledge. Also, there's a chronological reason as to why you see people copying builds at the moment: XWing is currently in second stage of meta development, which is when the Tier 1 builds are beginning to become solidly defined. We reach Tier 2 when the Tier 2 counter builds become defined, which should be within a few months or so. We already see some counter builds, but not that many yet, because people haven't fully explored the whole meta and know every Tier 1 build exactly yet.

Also, if you paid attention to very early Wave 5 builds, those were a little different: Chiraneau, used by high level champions, for instance used Expose EI instead of VI and EU. However, slowly of course, it became more obvious that EU was too powerful to ignore and that VI was also required as the myth that the PS war was over was solidly debunked.

Hi SoT,

I agree that the two ship builds are certainly vogue right now. Why are they so good? Well, first I think it is easier to fly two ships then seven, less un-wanted bumping etc... B) You can upgrade the Sh*t out of them with things that minimize the dice like; token stacks, gunner, C3PO, rebel captive, predator and autothruster...(the list goes on). Also the large ships are very maneuverable once you put engine upgrade on them (plus the turret), which may be their biggest advantage, finally they have high PS so they get to react to your move.

That being said I do think Mr Heaver's theory of the three pillars still works. The two ship builds are typically arc dodgers and turrets (don't know where the IG and FireSpray fit in, arc dodger and a jouster plus maybe). So then if you want to fly a meta breaking list you should try a swarm (jousters), either a BBBBZ, or BBZZZZ, or the classic first meta a TIE swarm. Practice flying them, which includes asteroid placement (you can template your first few turns). Understand when to bump and when not to. Try and throw a cheap ace arc dodger in there as well... Soontir with PTL and autothruster (32 points, a bargain at twice the price!) or maybe a ship that buffs other ships (Howlrunner). Your strategy will be to go for RAC first (if you don't know what that is go to the beginning of the thread....just kidding but seriously). Since you wont always be playing against RAC go for a large based ship first, preferably one without EU as your ships wont be able to keep up, if they all have EU you will have to trap one in a corner....

Oh you also have to get used to loosing... Recently I tried a doom shuttle (vader, tactician, flechette cannon) and 6 ties to break the meta.... I think it could work with a little luck.

That being said, they do say if you can't beat them join them... so when you are done beating your head against the wall, swallow your pride, go buy a pair of IGs and let the good times roll!

Thanks for the replies everyone! Sorry for the miscommunication in the article concerning the acronyms. I will definitely define those more clearly in the future.

No I haven't read those articles but if you link them I would love to check them out. Like I said in the disclaimer, I don't claim to know any more than anyone, I was just writing about my personal observations. Thanks for the reply though I am actually fairly new to this game, so please forgive my lack of information on the earlier stages of the game.

Anyway, I appreciate you all taking the time to check it out and for the feedback.

Good thing I said "almost" then...

oh.. I didn't define my version of swarm, quite simply if your squad can throw 13 or more red dice a turn it is a swarm. It works because 2 red have a better chance of a hit than two green have of an evade.

RAC is a PWT just like HAN

wait a tic...
