Pushing the limit during combat phase

By wolverine71790, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Ok, question with The Push the Limit Elite Pilot card. After reading in the Interceptors and Autothrusters rules section,

Push can apparantly be used anytime after the Activation phase and the initial action has been performed. Now, the real question Is, using Fantasy Flight's example with Turr Phennir in the article, I tried to use it in much the same way, attacking a Pilot and then Pushing, to boost out of his ark after the attack was performed. The issue is, he was of the same pilot skill. Does he get to attack before i can Push (and thus boost), or is Push all encompassing ANY time after i performed that first action?

And if that's the case, can I use it at the end of the Activation Phase, like for example, an Xwing has me completely outmanuvered and is of a higher pilot skill. Can I Push immediately after his movement is complete, to escape his firing arc before he even gets a chance to shoot?

Push is done in response to performing another action. As far as interceptors go you can only push immediately following an evade, focus, boost, or barrel roll and you cannot perform the same action twice per round. In other words yes Tur can Fire, then after performing his free boost or barrel roll immediately push the limit to take another action as long as it is one he has not performed this round. It must be done immediately after taking an action however and cannot be used later in the round unless something causes you to take another action later in the round.

Push cannot be used at any time - it can only be used after an action has been performed, and it must be used immediately after the action has been performed.

Push the Limit can be used only once per round and the trigger for it is immediately after you perform an action. So it's not restricted to the Activation phase and can be used during the Combat phase.

In the case of Turr, he gets to perform a free boost or barrel roll action after he's made an attack. The restrictions on these options are: he must not be stressed and he can't perform the same action twice in a round. So if you've barrel rolled as your Perform Action Step action, you can't do that one. And the same goes for the boost, obviously. But, because either of these is an action, it can most definitely trigger Push the Limit, which will give you a free action from your action bar (one you haven't done yet).

As for the other pilot, it doesn't really matter about his pilot skill, unless he has the initiative (in which case he would get to shoot first). You have the active ship during the Combat phase and you get to finish all your attacks and actions before he can attempt an attack. So if you manage to boost and/or barrel roll out of his arc, then you've pretty much used Turr exactly how he was intended to be used.

Example: You have the initiative and your opponent has just maneuvered Jake Farrel (PS7) into Range 1, nose-to-nose (but not overlapping) with Turr. For your action you chose Focus. In the Combat phase, you get to shoot first and you make your attack, delivering enough uncancelled hits to destroy him. Now Turr's ability can kick in (as he's just performed an attack) and you decide to barrel roll, but this still leaves you just in arc, so you Push the Limit and boost clear of Jake's arc. Under the Simultaneous Attack rule, Jake gets to make his attack, but as you are no longer in his arc, he has no target, and can't make an attack, and is now destroyed and removed from the table. Another victory to the Empire!

That's not true.

You can push after any Action, you are however limited to only those actions on your action bar for your free action with PtL.

For your first Question - If you have initiative, attack, and then use Turr's ability with PTL to boost and barrel roll out of the other ship's firing arc - then NO - he would not get an attack, because you are now out of arc. The boost/barrel action is completed within your attack sequence - Before he can begin his attack.

Second Question - PTL is triggered by an action, so a higher PS pilot will typically move and take actions after you and then fire and take any availble actions before you can.

The only scenario I could see where you might be able to do this is if you had another ship with Squad Leader that passed you a free action during their sequence.

EXAMPLE:

PS7 Turr Phennir moves and takes a focus action.

PS8 Luke Skywalker moves in range and has you in arc - taking his action.

PS9 Vader equipped with Squad Leader is in range 1-2 after moving. He uses one of his 2 actions to activate Squad Leader and give you a free action.

You may then barrel roll and activate PTL to boost out of arc. (Or whatever sequence you want to take those actions.)

Also - assuming you only had to use one action to get out of arc and are able to attack a ship that round, you could save the PTL, use your Pilot ability to do the remaining Boost/BR action and then activate PTL to Evade.

Are there any Rebel set ups that would allow for a PTL in the combat phase?

Are there any Rebel set ups that would allow for a PTL in the combat phase?

Z-95 Pilot Airen Cracken chooses another friendly ship after an attack and it is given a free action.

If that ship has PTL, it could use it after the free action.

HWK-290 Kyle Katarn can assign a focus token to another ship at the start of the Combat phase.

A Wing Jake Farrel can perform a boost or barrel roll when performing a focus action or being assigned a focus token - so could trigger another action from that interface.

In Jake's case, he could Move and Target Lock during the Activation phase.

Kyle assigns him a focus token at the start of the Combat phase, which allows him to boost.

Airen Cracken attacks and gives him a free action - Jake uses this to focus and gets a barrel roll

Jake triggers PTL to take an evade.

Thus he gets 5 actions in the turn with 2 focus tokens, one evade token and a target lock.

Would be a pretty exciting tun if you had Proton Rockets equipped and boosted and barrel rolled into range 1 of your target.

dude, that's fricken awesome... Can't wait to spring that on my brother Bwahaha

Here's a 99 pt build with Jake, Airen, Tala, and Kyle.

A-Wing Jake Farrell (24) + PTL (3) + Proton Rockets (3) = 30

Z95 Airen Cracken (19) + VI (1) + Cluster Missiles (4) = 24

Z95 Tala Squad Pilot (13) + Cluster Missles (4) = 17

HWK Kyle Katarn(21) + Blaster Turret (4) +Moldy Crow (3) = 28

With Cluster Missles, Airen Cracken's ability triggers twice, which means free actions to 2 pilots in range.

Useful for the Tala Pilot to be able to Target and Focus in the same round.

Not sure how good a build this is, but might be fun to run.
